Naturelo Magnesium (Glycinate Chelate) – Class Action Investigation

We are investigating claims that Naturelo Magnesium is mislabeled.

Naturelo Magnesium Class Action Investigation

What is Naturelo Magnesium Supplement?

Naturelo Magnesium Glycine Chelate is a supplement which claims to provide 200mg of highly bioavailable magnesium per capsule. Other leading magnesium supplements, like Klaire Labs and Megafoods, offer just 100mg or less of magnesium per capsule, so Naturelo’s doses are unusually high.

Naturelo claims that its Magnesium Supplement is plant- based and made with organic vegetables and seeds with naturally occurring magnesium, including organic spinach, swiss chard, okra, quinoa, black bean, pumpkin seed, sunflower seed and flaxseed.  It says that the Magnesium is “chelated” with Glycine for better absorption and bioavailability. In this ‘glycinate’ form it is easy on the stomach, non-laxative, and enhances the natural calming benefits of magnesium.

Naturelo claims that the supplement has other benefits, such as relaxing nerves and providing support for calm and sleep. Such claims have not been evaluated or confirmed by the FDA.

Who Makes Naturelo Magnesium Supplement?

Naturelo Premium Supplements is a west coast-based business which claims to manufacture vitamins and supplements from plant-based sources. The company markets itself as a family-owned enterprise with a back-to-nature ethos. It bills its products as an alternative to supplements that were developed “in the lab.”

Naturelo says that its line of more than 50 supplements are all made with clean, natural ingredients and that in many cases, organic products are used.

Their products are significantly pricier than other leading vitamins and supplements on the market.

In addition, the company claims that its products are all third-party tested. In response to consumer questions, the company has offered to make its testing results available upon request.

What Is In Naturelo Magnesium?

Naturelo claims that its magnesium glycine supplement is made with “organic vegetables and seeds with naturally-occuring magnesium.” The company specifies that those vegetables include spinach, swiss chard, and okra; the supplement also includes quinoa, black bean, pumpkin seed, sunflower seed, and flax seed, according to Naturelo.

Naturelo says that its supplement is made with magnesium that has been chelated with glycerine. Chelated minerals are often touted as being more effective than other supplements.

Chelation is a binding process, which bonds a mineral like magnesium to an amino acid, like glycerine. In theory, this process makes it easier for the human body to absorb minerals, bypassing the normal digestive process. However, there is no clear medical evidence to support claims about the benefits of chelation.

What Does Naturelo Magnesium Claim to Do?

Naturelo makes many claims about its magnesium glycerine supplement.

The company’s marketing material touts magnesium as a natural way to improve physical and mental well-being. According to Naturelo, magnesium “supports healthy muscle and nerve function to help revlieve tension and discomfort.” Magnesium may also reduce muscle cramps and leg spasms, Naturelo says.

The mineral also “promotes calm and sleep,” Naturelo claims. Taking magnesium may reduce stress, calm you down, and improve your sleep, according to the company.

Naturelo touts its magnesium glycerine supplement as a great way to get the benefits of magnesium in a natural form. The company also says that its supplement will be easy to absorb and will not cause any digestive discomfort.

According to Naturelo’s website, its magnesium supplement “delivers 200mg of magnesium glycinate chelate, a form that’s easy for your body to absorb without stomach distress and enhances the natural calming benefits of magnesium.”

Where Is Naturelo Magnesium Sold?

Naturelo products, including the Naturelo Magnesium supplement, are sold on Amazon and at a number of other retailers.

Walmart carries Naturelo’s line of products, and so do a number of online retailers like Vitacost and iHerb. The supplements are also available in smaller, local stores.

Why Is There a Class Action Investigation of Naturelo?

If you’ve bought Naturelo Supplement in the last 4 years, you may have a claim. Lemberg Law is investigating claims that the Magnesium Supplement product is mislabeled.  Here’s why: magnesium bisglycinate chelate is 10% magnesium cation and magnesium bisglycinate chelate buffered is 18% magnesium cation.  If this product claims that the magnesium glycinate they are using is 14.1% magnesium cation, then they would need 1,418mg of raw material to achieve a 200mg serving.

That result is impossible to achieve. The magnesium serving is likely only 100mg per capsule.

Why do Consumers Buy Magnesium Supplements?

Consumers take Magnesium Supplements for many different reasons:

  1. Energy Creation
  2. Boost exercise performance
  3. Fight depression
  4. Type 2 Diabetes
  5. Lower blood pressure
  6. Anti-inflammatory benefits
  7. Prevent migraines

Few people know, however, that there is a lot of fraud and mislabeling in dietary supplement industry. Many magnesium supplements significantly understate the amount of actual magnesium that is provided.
