2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Problems Advisory Report
We examine the top problems with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado including electrical, engine, and various safety issues, including vehicle speed control, in this advisory
Chevrolet describes the 2024 Silverado as a “trusted workhorse” with a “bold new look.” More importantly, the automaker states that its 2024 Chevrolet Silverado “commands the road with more power, enhanced interior, and smarter technology.” With complaints about failing safety systems, all kinds of electrical problems, and engine malfunctions, it’s difficult to comprehend how “smart” the technology really is.
Brief Overview
At first glance, it’s clear to see that the most common problems forwarded to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 relate to the electrical system and the engine — more than 36% and 31% respectively. There are, though, problems with other components and systems, including vehicle speed control, forward collision avoidance, and other safety features.
Other components and systems that consumers have highlighted to the NHTSA are problematic including airbags, exterior lighting, the powertrain, brakes, steering, structure, suspension, and tires.
Additionally, there is a recall that affects a small number of 2024 Silverado 2500 trucks (38) that risk their trailer from detaching. This is due to the rear bumper mounting bracket being underrated for towing. The danger is that if a trailer detaches from the pickup truck it increases the risk of a crash.
We’re going to look at safety issues first, and then highlight other electrical and engine problems.
Safety Concerns
While it is true that just about every problem consumers experience with their vehicles is potentially a safety problem, we are going to focus on those that relate specifically to features designed to improve safety. These include vehicle speed control and forward collision avoidance.
An owner from Nevada talks about an “extreme safety risk” related to both vehicle speed control and forward collision avoidance. “While using cruise control on (the) freeway at approximately 70 mph when headed uphill, the vehicle reached approximately 2,500-3k.” At this point, “the cruise will disengage and (the) speed will drop immediately with no warning.” The explanation from the dealer was that the “manual states one may have to use the throttle to maintain speed, but (it) does not mention (the) cruise dropping off. This is an extreme safety risk when a vehicle is behind you accelerating on the same incline and you suddenly drop speed with no brake lights illuminating.”
Another complaint involving vehicle speed control is from an owner in Texas. “The safety concern is that I cannot see my speed, my tire pressure, (or) mileage, and I will not be able to see if there are other issues wrong with my vehicle since the entire dash gauges are not visible. The system is not resetting while driving and I lose power when it does that. I have to guess when to put gas or put the risk of myself and other drivers of my vehicle stalling out in the middle of a highway.”
Despite the dealer performing a “system test” and an update, “they confirmed that did not fix the cluster issue.”
There are also complaints that the rear backup and front cameras only work intermittently. One states, “The only warning I get is a blank screen with a ‘X’ and a camera icon.”

Electrical System Problems
Electrical system problems are varied, ranging from crackling speakers and air conditioning that stop working to error warnings that pose a safety risk.
A Maryland owner tells how all the “error lights came on and the dash cycled back up like when starting the vehicle. This is a safety risk because you cannot see any info on the dash, including speedometer, RPMs, and fuel level!” But, typically, the dealer stated they couldn’t recreate the problem and hadn’t heard of anything like this before.
There are also sound problems with the Bluetooth hands-free system. “When on the phone there are random crackle noises from the speakers. Most of the time it’s when they’re pronouncing letters that create a higher pitch sound in normal conversations followed by the crackle. It’s happening throughout the call and is consistent on every call.” This problem was confirmed by a dealership, but with no resolution.
Error Warnings & Other Engine Issues
These issues range from loud rattling sounds and faulty aircon units to other more serious issues.
An owner from Texas tells in an NHTSA complaint how he got warnings that the tank fluid was low. I “stopped at the next gas station to fill the DEF tank with fluid but it only took about 1.5 gallons to top it off. I believe it holds 7.7 gallons.” After this, the DEF level didn’t reset and the warnings continued. After traveling to his destination, “I had 298 miles remaining. I topped the DEF tank off once again and it took 1.5 gallons again. This only brought the level back to “low add fluid’.” The issue continued for hundreds of miles, with the owner refilling the four-month-old vehicle with about 1 gallon at every stop.
“My issue with this system is that it could render the vehicle undrivable in the middle of nowhere hundreds of miles away from a Chevrolet Service Center. The DEF system, especially when it is verified that the tank has fluid and is actually using it normally, should be able to be bypassed to make it to a repair center.”
An owner from Florida had several serious problems including a stiff steering wheel and engine that lost power. At first, the dealership said it was an airbag system issue, then changed this, saying it was an engineer and transmission problem. Three days later, arriving for an appointment at the dealership, the owner was told there was a backlog, and to return a month later! One day later, there was an issue with the anti-lock braking system. “To date, I have not received a clear explanation or resolution for these problems,” he states.
