2025 Toyota Tacoma Door Handle Not Working Investigation
Class Action Investigation

Lemberg Law is launching a class action investigation into a defective interior door handle affecting 2025 Toyota Tacoma vehicles. The handle mechanism fails without warning, leaving occupants unable to exit the vehicle from the inside.
I’m Sergei Lemberg, a consumer protection attorney who has spent more than two decades representing vehicle owners in lemon law and defect cases. This investigation started with complaints. When I see the same failure described the same way by owner after owner, across different trims and different states, that tells me something. This is not a one-off. It is a pattern.
So I dug in. I reviewed owner complaints filed with NHTSA and online owner forums to put together a picture of this issue.
What’s the Problem with the Toyota Tacoma Door Handle?
On 2025 Toyota Tacoma vehicles, the interior door handle mechanism fails during normal use. The handle breaks at the point where the cable connects to the latch release, leaving the handle loose and inoperative. Once failed, the door cannot be opened from inside the cabin. The only way to exit is to roll down the window and reach outside to pull the exterior handle, an awkward maneuver that is difficult under normal circumstances and potentially impossible in an emergency.
Owners report the same symptoms:
- Interior door handle becomes loose or completely inoperative during normal use
- Door cannot be opened from inside the vehicle
- Failure occurs with no warning and at low mileage, some as low as 4,000 miles
- Dealerships confirm the failure but cannot complete repairs due to backordered parts
- Multiple doors affected on some vehicles, including both front and rear handles
Which Vehicles Are Involved?
Based on owner complaints filed with NHTSA and online owner forums, this investigation currently focuses on:
- 2025 Toyota Tacoma (all trims)
Complaints reference failures across multiple trim levels including the SR5, TRD Pro, and others.
What are Owners Experiencing?
Here are a few complaints from Tacoma owners I came across in my research:
“The driver side inner door handle does not work. This is a huge safety issue because you can only open the door by rolling down the window and pulling the outer driver side door handle. I took the truck to the dealer and the part to fix it is on back order with no known date when they will get it. I am now forced to drive an un safe vehicle for who knows how long. This is a common issue with the 2024-2025 Tacomas and needs addressed.”
“The door handle mechanism which is made of plastic broke on the inside of the door. It was the piece the cable connects to which pulls to release the door latch for opening. Only way to get out of door is to roll window down and open from outside the vehicle. Truck has 7k miles currently and no heavy use. Under proper circumstances this could be very dangerous.”
“Interior drivers side door handle broken. I thought it was the locking mechanism having issues and i had to hold the locking plastic tab in the unlock position to open the door from the inside. After the 3rd time exiting my tacoma the door handle snapped. Now i how to open the door from the outside by rolling down the window, making it inconvenient in the rain.”
Is There a TSB or Recall?
At this time, there is no formal safety recall covering the interior door handle defect in the 2025 Toyota Tacoma.
Toyota has not issued a public technical service bulletin or recall addressing this issue. Owners are relying on dealer visits and warranty claims to seek resolution, with limited success. Parts are on national backorder with no confirmed availability date, leaving owners driving vehicles they cannot exit normally from the inside.
What Can You Do?
If you own a 2025 Toyota Tacoma and have experienced an interior door handle failure, here are the steps to take:
- Document the failure with dates, mileage, and conditions.
- Save all repair orders and service invoices, including any documentation of backordered parts.
- File a complaint with NHTSA at www.nhtsa.gov. The volume of complaints filed can support a formal federal investigation and expedite recall action.
- Do not ignore this issue. An inoperative door handle is a safety risk, particularly in an emergency.
Your Legal Rights
Warranty law, lemon law, and consumer protection statutes may apply here. If your door handle has failed and Toyota has been unable to complete the repair in a reasonable time, you may have legal options. Depending on the scope of the issue, this matter may also give rise to class action litigation on behalf of all affected Tacoma owners.
