Engine

  • Hybrid charger on fire: With the 4x4E trim of the Wrangler, there appear to be issues with the charger. This hybrid variant has had the fire department called on it because of fires.
  • Overheating engine: Drivers of the Wrangler complain that the engine can overheat for no apparent reason. In one situation, the problem started after the hybrid charger started on fire. Failure can occur with fewer than 10,000 miles on the odometer.
  • Power loss: The 2021-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe faces a widespread issue with engine power loss, prompting the NHTSA to open a recall query affecting over 94,000 vehicles. Despite previous recalls and software updates, owners continue to report power loss, raising concerns about the effectiveness of the fixes and highlighting additional risks, including potential battery failure.

Electrical System

  • Random shuts down: While driving on the highway, one owner had the Wrangler shut off completely. They were able to get the vehicle off the road, but it wouldn’t restart. Once it was towed to the dealership, they were told that the battery was defective and two fuses were blown, but there was no reasoning as to what caused such a failure. Sadly, the problem occurred again shortly after it was “fixed.”
  • Multiple dashboard warning lights: Owners are met with strange warning lights, even when nothing appears to be wrong. Some of the most common include “HOOD NOT LATCHED,” “ABS FAILURE,” “SERVICE BRAKING SYSTEM” and “SERVICE CHARGING SYSTEM.” Some of these malfunctions are more common after the Wrangler has been at the service department for repairs to the electrical or charging system.

Powertrain

  • Transmission errors: Drivers have had the Wrangler shut down after throwing a transmission error. The vehicle alerts the driver to put it in Park and once that happens, it shuts down. In some cases, it was impossible to get the Wrangler off the road before failure occurred. The only option was to have it towed to the nearest service center.
  • Can’t shift out of Park: Drivers also get into the Wrangler expecting to shift from Park, but the gear selector won’t move. It gets stuck in Park with a Check Engine Light on. In some cases, the “Service Electronic Stability” warning also illuminates. Even overriding the shifter doesn’t allow tow truck drivers to put the vehicle in Neutral so it can be towed safely. In rare cases, a complete transmission replacement was required to fix the problem.
  • Leaking differential fluid: With less than 1,000 miles, the differential can start leaking fluid and smoke comes from the rear as it’s burned on the exhaust. Unfortunately, this problem could cause a car fire. Dealerships often diagnose the problem as a bad pinion seal on the rear axle, but even after a repair, the problem appears to persist.
