2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Problems Report

We found that suspension, electrical system, and steering issues are the primary causes of complaints for the 2023 MY Grand Cherokee

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the third model of the fifth generation of Cherokees, which Jeep says continues to be “a true global icon in the premium SUV segment.” But the reality, as many consumer complaints reveal, is that even icons can be problematic. 2023 owners are reporting cases of failed suspension, electrical system malfunctions that result in burning, and dangerous steering issues.

Most Common Problems

In recent years, there have been a multitude of complaints about the Jeep Grand Cherokee to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA). By November 2024, there were hundreds of complaints about the 2023 model alone. In terms of numbers, the electrical system, suspension, and steering appear to be the most problematic. However, there are also reports of engine, forward collision avoidance, powertrain, brakes, and lane departure causing major issues.

Many other components and systems are mentioned fewer times, though this doesn’t make them any less important. They include airbags, backover prevention, equipment, exterior lighting, fuel propulsion system, lane departure, brakes, seats and seat belts, structure, vehicle speed control, visibility, and the wheels of the vehicle.

Of course, as usual, complaints are often filed under more than one component or system. This complicates any true analysis of which is to blame.

Electrical System Concerns

More than a quarter of complaints to the NHTSA are about the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee electrical system. These include problems with the Uconnect system, connectivity problems, and issues with faulty batteries.

One of the most serious issues relating to batteries was experienced by an owner from Virginia whose battery caught alight while parked at his home. It is the very issue that prompted NHTSA Recall Number 24V720000, issued on September 27, 2024. However, this incident occurred on March 1, 2024.

“Luckily, the fire department got it controlled before any additional property or any people were harmed, but under slightly different circumstances (middle of the night or parked in the garage) the house would have burned and my entire family could have been killed.” To add to the owner’s problem, Stellantis has not supplied the owner with a replacement car, yet he still has to pay the loan for the vehicle that was totaled.

As recently as October 25, 2024, other owners were complaining that the recall repair for this battery problem wasn’t available. This means that owners should not charge them and they shouldn’t park anywhere near buildings.

There is another, quite different fire incident, which luckily wasn’t as devastating. A South Carolina owner reports in an NHTSA complaint that she smelled “a burning odor” while sitting in the front driver’s seat while parked. There weren’t any warning lights or messages. She “saw smoke coming from the left edge of the backrest of the driver’s seat.” She was able to “put out the smoke with her hand,” but burned her finger while doing this.

Despite the injury, she didn’t need medical attention, but the vehicle was towed to the dealer. Jeep sent out a fire inspector who diagnosed the vehicle but did not provide any information to the owner, whose Jeep had only about 311 miles on the clock.

Uconnect System

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee is equipped with Uconnect, a feature-rich infotainment and technology platform that should enhance the driving experience. However, some owners have reported various issues with the Uconnect system, impacting its functionality and reliability.

Several owners have experienced recurring problems with the Uconnect screen, which controls critical safety and operating systems. The screen often goes black, particularly when the vehicle is put into reverse and the backup camera is activated. This malfunction results in the loss of the backup camera and the inability to operate safety systems. Despite numerous reports, dealers have struggled to replicate the issue and find a solution, leaving owners frustrated and concerned about their safety.

Another prevalent complaint involves the Uconnect screen intermittently freezing or becoming non-responsive when the vehicle is started. This issue has primarily occurred during vehicle startup and not while driving. The unresponsive screen poses a significant problem for owners who heavily rely on the rear camera view to ensure safety while reversing. In some instances, the screen displays unfamiliar icons or fails to show any relevant information, rendering crucial features inaccessible.

Connectivity Problems

Owners have reported a wide range of electrical and connectivity issues with their Uconnect system. These problems include the failure of wireless and wired Apple CarPlay connections, unreliable Bluetooth connectivity, inaccessible navigation maps, random loss of volume or sound, and the absence of Sirius XM and FM/AM radio functionality. Additionally, the center screen is known to constantly reboot, memory settings are not retained, key fob and user profiles do not store settings properly, and the touchless liftgate feature often fails to operate.

Problems with Suspension

Vehicles rely on a sound suspension system to ensure that you can steer with stability and ensure a comfortable drive. It does this by maximizing the friction between the road and the tires of the vehicle. The suspension also supports the weight of the vehicle evenly and affects the aerodynamics of the vehicle.

Jeep has installed what they portray as Jeep’s super-special Quadra-Lift Air Suspension system in Jeep Grand Cherokees. Instead of using traditional coil springs that are located at each wheel, it incorporates air springs. These allow the Jeep to be lowered or raised across a span of 4.1 inches. It’s an automatic adjustment system, so drivers don’t have to stop to raise or lower the suspension.

But they don’t give any advice on what to do when it malfunctions. The problem is that there are many complaints, and they keep on coming. There are also two suspension recalls, both mentioned above. These are due to a loss of control from steering knuckle separation and incorrectly installed rear coil springs. There are complaints that repair parts for the former, listed in February 2024, were not available as recently as May 2024. There are also complaints about the latter, stating that the recall repair did not solve the rear coil spring problem.

A large number of the complaints relate to information and lack of repair parts for these recalls.

Owner Suspension Experiences

An owner of a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee says in a complaint dated February 16, 2023, that the “Quadra-Lift Air Suspension has failed twice while being driven and once during repairs.” The Jeep has less than 1,000 miles on the clock and it’s been in the shop more than it’s been on the road.

The California owner of a 2023 Grand Cherokee with less than 7,000 miles on the clock has what seems to be a less complicated suspension failure. Driving at about 25-30 mph, “the passenger rear spring popped off of the vehicle and was completely disengaged from the vehicle. It popped out of the rear of the vehicle into cars behind me. There were no warning lights, no messages, lights, etc.” In addition to the spring, the owner retrieved a piece of round plastic pipe and took it to the dealership.

A more recent complaint lodged in April 2024 reports the Jeep making a clicking and clunking sound when turning. It took the owner over a month to get an appointment to get the vehicle looked at. With 2,800 miles the vehicle was diagnosed with a faulty right axle shaft. After waiting for more than two weeks for the parts to be delivered and replaced, 16 days later, the issue recurred. Again, it took nearly a month for an appointment. The vehicle was with the dealer for 6 days and they couldn’t identify an issue. Then the dealer changed the diagnosis and later confirmed there is an undiagnosed steering/suspension problem. They were unable to fix these. “They have since stopped communicating with me to come to a resolution for these safety issues.”

Steering Problems

There are serious steering problems with the 2023 Grand Cherokee. The very fact that there are three recalls that relate to steering proves this to be so. Nevertheless, the complaints are varied.

An owner from Michigan describes “massive alerts” that went on and off every few miles. Then the power steering locked when the driver was pulling into an intersection. “I was almost hit. Luckily, I was able to put the car in reverse and back into the side street. This needs immediate attention.” In the meantime, the owner had the Jeep towed to the dealer.

In a complaint lodged as a combined steering and forward collision avoidance problem, an owner from Connecticut faced several other issues before the power steering failed. “Driving 35 mph on a back road, no cars coming the opposite direction, the automatic emergency braking system flashed, beeped and slammed my brakes momentarily. Luckily there was no one behind me. I attempted to pull into a parking lot and the entire electrical system went crazy, all warning lights, systems and sensors went off and I lost power steering. Had I been driving during power steering loss it would have been very dangerous.” This was the second the failure had occurred. The dealer kept the vehicle for three weeks for the repair, but the problem wasn’t solved.

Another owner “suddenly lost power steering completely, making it incredibly difficult to control. This was not only unexpected but also quite frightening, given the potential for accidents in such situations. To add to the concern, about six warning lights illuminated on the dashboard.” These included a warning about the power steering. Only then did she discover there was a recall that relates to the steering assembly. “I believe this matter needs urgent attention.”

Airbag Failure Results in 6 Injuries

Airbags are installed in vehicles to save lives. When they fail, people get injured. Even though there are not a lot of complaints about airbag problems, this one is worth sharing.

A 2023 Grand Cherokee owner from Florida was involved in a head-on collision with another car and none of the airbags deployed. The complaint states that 6 people were injured.

“The fire department and police department were concerned and shocked that they did not deploy. They cut the wiring to the battery for fear it would deploy late and I was injured in the car with a firefighter holding my neck. My car was a total loss.”

We bought a 2023 Grand Cherokee Limited in Oct of 2023, the car is absolutely junk for $54,000 dollars. The back up camera freezes often even after they “updated the recall,” it also goes black often to where nothing can be used, and it updates while you’re driving highway speeds and while it’s updating it tells me all systems are shutting down. What happens when I am not in the position to be able to pull over or get off the highway and all systems shut down? This is a major safety concern. There was also a recall on the rear coil springs, the intermediate drive shaft and the camera. They said the intermediate drive shaft passed, but my passenger side rear coil spring had to be replaced I have the paperwork and the service advisor showed me that the parts needed to be ordered I signed on the paperwork and waited to hear back from the dealer. They finally called a month or so later and said my parts were in so we scheduled the appointment went in and the man that we talked to told me that my rear coil spring was already replaced, I asked him when that happened because my car hadn’t been back since the first appointment, he said he didn’t know when but they weren’t doing the work they already put in Jeeps system that the recall was fixed. I asked for a manager he came over and said that he was going to have someone look at it to clear up any confusion, we watched the man look under the car in the drop off garage not on the rack in the shop area, he was under there for seconds and then said this was never bad it’s fine. I wasn’t excepting that answer after 2 people told me it was bad at the first visit, then the other man said it was replaced, and then this man said it was never bad. The service manager called me back and told the BBB when I complained about this that he was ordering the parts and would call me when they came in. There is also a light that comes on when I turn several times per week that says lane departure assist can be used service required, I took this to the dealer 2 times and they said they could not reproduce the light then they can’t do anything for it. I paid for the safety features on this vehicle and they don’t work half the time including the cameras and the lane keep assist. We also have them fix the broken bumper clips and they caused damage to the vehicle. The bumper was not replaced correctly and it still hangs over the light not to mention my fender that they bent. The dealership refuses to call me back about any of the issues but mine and my family’s life’s could be in danger over this rear coil spring. They have said 3 times they were ordering the parts and now I only drive short distances because I am afraid of this breaking while we are driving. There is also a weird rubbing, grinding sound that they couldn’t reproduce either. This car is a LEMON and I would like to find a way to get my money back and find something that I am not terribly afraid to drive long distance. I also reached out jeep after the rear coil spring deal because I wanted to take it to another dealer to get it checked and she said since they said the recall was complete I would have to pay the fee for diagnostics which she thought would be $250. I should not have to pay that when I have proof that it was originally deemed a bad part.

The 2023 Grand Cherokee Overland purchased in Richmond (Canada) on January 7th this year failed to start on the day of purchase. After jump-starting, it ran for 3 days before failing to start again. Towed back to the dealer, the battery was replaced. It ran for 2 days before failing again. Towed back to the dealer, the secondary battery was replaced. It ran for 1 day before failing once more. Towed back to the dealer, it was discovered that the dashboard intermittently powered on after the car was turned off. The dashboard fuse was replaced, and it ran for 1 day before failing again. Towed back to the dealer, it was found that the DVD player (rear screen) continued to drain the battery even when the screen was closed after the car was turned off. The DVD player module was replaced. After fully charging the battery, a technician conducted a test drive for three days. Yesterday evening at 9:24, the Jeep app received an airbag and tire pressure alarm. Today, the technician checked, and while the computer did not display the aforementioned alarms, the battery was only at 30%. What could be the problem? The fifth time it failed to start, the odometer reading was 330 kilometers.
The technician test drove my car from the evening of February 6th to the morning of February 9th. On February 5th, Chrysler headquarters sent an email to all Chrysler dealers regarding a feature in Jeep vehicles that controls SOS, upload, download, GPS, etc. The module for this feature would continue to operate non-stop after the car was turned off, causing many vehicles to experience battery issues. Dealers were instructed not to activate this feature for certain models after customers purchased the vehicle (my vehicle model was listed). However, on February 7th, Chrysler headquarters sent another email stating that this issue had been resolved. Regarding this issue, personally, I believe that my car’s failure to start is not solely due to this module issue because this problem exists in many Chrysler models, which implies that these vehicles may experience the same situation as mine: failure to start. However, only my car fails to start, indicating that there must be other reasons besides the module issue causing my car’s starting problem.

Bought a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe in March, and after couple of days I had it the switching between electric and thermal engine was generating a massive bump that my head bumped into the head rest, bring it back to the shop they fix it within 2 days saying the system needed an update, couple of months later I had the same issues that Laura described with the power steering and all the dashboard lighting up like a Christmas tree, car had to be towed and another 2 days in the shop, another software update. Now with 6,082 miles on the car is in the shop again, this time the a/c wasn’t working so I wait 2 weeks as the damaged parts which need to be replaced were not available and I was assured that today I will get the car back, but it turns out that now the Evaporator Core is leaking and “We had to order an evaporator core. We aren’t sure when we are going to get that part, but we will need to keep your Jeep here” this was the answer I got by text message from the service department, so will be probably another 2 weeks, if not more, until I will get the car back.
is my 3rd Jeep and I never had issues with the previous 2 but this car is a disaster……

Had my 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee for 2 months with less than 3000 miles on it. One day I drove it about an hour from home with no issues. When I went to drive back home my car wouldn’t start. Then I had smoke coming into the cabin with a plastic burning smell. The car had to get towed to the nearest dealer. Upon inspection the battery failed, the starter melted, and a number of other things. It took two weeks for the repairs to be completed. I picked up the car after it was “fixed” and on my drive home the dashboard started lighting up all of these error messages (airbags, antilock brakes, amongst other key safety features). I took it back to the dealership and they had it for three days. They said they did a computer alignment and it was fixed. On my drive home from that service the dashboard was doing the same thing. It has now been in the shop for almost another week. I feel like this car is a complete lemon is definitely unsafe to drive. Chrysler customer care has been useless! I get constant pushback about needing a rental car and reimbursement for said rental car. So far I am out of pocket $1600 in rental fees and haven’t been reimbursed a dime. Additionally, I am making lease payments on a brand new vehicle that I cannot even drive!

In January we purchased a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L edition. It is a lemon I have 6446 miles on it. The auto stop/ start has NEVER worked. We live in the south so a warning message appears on the center of the digital screen saying that the cabin is cooling/ heating and will not work. I have brought it to the dealer where we purchased it in Myrtle Beach SC and made an appointment to have it repaired but then we both caught a cold so I had to cancel it. I have taken two trips to NJ which would give the cabin plenty of time to cool off or heat up and still nothing. Well today it rained and we went out and those dashboard lights are lighting up like a Christmas tree. The lane departure assist is not working. One light had a star near a fender which I assume that beware of blind spots or you will get in a accident and another one lights up. I don’t know what it meant. I called the dealer and it can’t go into shop till June 6 2023. Why pay almost $60,000 for a piece of crap. I am disappointed in my jeep. You pay so much money for it and must wait almost 2 weeks to be repaired when it SHOULD NOT have broke down to begin with!

I have a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 5000 miles on it- I went to pull out of my garage this morning, and could not turn the wheel, it was locked- I turned the car off then on- all the warning lights were going off
the mileage was blinking, lane assist, power steering service light- when the tow guy arrived he was able to to force the wheel which unlocked it- he said I had the wheel turned too far?- it was parked straight in my garage and I was never able to even turn it when backing up this morning. Waiting on the dealership
