The 2025 Nissan Pathfinder Investigation: Engine Stalls, Transmission Failures, and Exploding Glass
Problem analysis of the 2025 Nissan Pathfinder found issues including engine stalls at idle, transmission shifting failures, and unexpected warning lights that impact safety and drivability.

Key Points
- Lemberg Law reviewed NHTSA data, consumer complaints, and internal data to identify the issues most often raised by 2025 Nissan Pathfinder owners.
- The number one issue involves engine stalling and power loss, with reports describing sudden shutdowns, reduced power warnings, and trouble restarting.
- Other complaints mention transmission and gear shifting failures, warning lights and electronic malfunctions, unintended acceleration and braking concerns, and repeated unresolved problems may qualify for lemon law relief.
The Pathfinder is a favorite out there. I like it too.
As part of my practice as a lemon law attorney, I constantly research car problems and share them here to educate owners. For the 2025 Nissan Pathfinder, I reviewed NHTSA complaints, owner feedback, and our own internal data, and a few recurring issues stood out enough to put this breakdown together. Keep in mind this is just focusing on the small percentage of vehicles that will run into problems. The majority of Pathfinder owners are out there driving with zero or minimal issues.
My name is Sergei Lemberg, and I have over twenty years of experience representing consumers in vehicle defect cases. Let’s dive in.
Most Common Problems with the 2025 Nissan Pathfinder
After examining multiple data sources, I found several common problems reported by 2025 Pathfinder owners. Based on frequency and impact, the primary issues include:
- Engine Stalling and Power Loss: Sudden engine shutdowns mostly occurring at idle or low speeds, sometimes causing the vehicle to enter limp mode or fail to restart promptly, creating hazardous situations.
- Transmission and Gear Shifting Failures: Difficulty engaging reverse or drive, unexpected low gear lockups, and rough or harsh shifting that can affect vehicle control.
- Warning Lights and Electronic Malfunctions: Multiple dashboard warnings including check engine, transmission error, emergency braking system failure, and collision avoidance alerts often activating without resolution.
- Unintended Acceleration and Brake Issues: Reports of gas pedals sticking and brake lights malfunctioning, which have serious safety implications.
- Broken or Shattered Glass: Sudden rear window or panoramic sunroof glass breakage while parked or driving, posing risk of injury and security concerns.
Several secondary issues also appear including inconsistent auto start/stop function, vibration in side mirrors, and faulty seatbelt sensors.

#1: Engine Stalling and Power Loss
I found that engine stalling at idle or low speeds is by far the most reported issue facing 2025 Pathfinder owners. This problem can happen suddenly without warning and often leaves drivers stranded or at risk in traffic.
Symptoms include:
- Engine shuts off when stopped or idling, sometimes multiple times during a single trip
- Dashboard warning lights such as “Engine Malfunction” and “Power Reduced” illuminating
- Difficulty restarting the vehicle immediately after stall
- Vehicle enters limp or reduced power mode, severely limiting acceleration
- Warning beeps and alerts from collision avoidance or braking systems activating unexpectedly
One Pathfinder owner reported
“Vehicle stalled on highway during extremely low outside temperatures and snow covered roadway. Engine malfunction, reduced power error code briefly appeared followed by a complete engine stall. Vehicle had no power and immediately needed to be steered to safety.” Another shared, “First time was on January 6th – entered highway and car stalled, was able to pull over and have the car towed to the dealer and they stated, “cannot replicate the issue”.”
Dealership diagnoses vary, but fuel pump failure, voltage regulator defects, and ECU (engine control unit) or ECM (engine control module) faults are commonly suspected causes. Unfortunately, many owners report dealers cannot consistently replicate the stalling in test drives, leading to delayed or incomplete repairs.

#2: Transmission and Gear Shifting Failures
Transmission glitches are another frequent complaint. These failures often occur shortly after purchase and can seriously interfere with vehicle operation and safety.
Symptoms include:
- Transmission not engaging reverse gear or unexpectedly shifting into neutral
- Vehicle stuck in low gear and unable to shift out unless engine is restarted
- Harsh or jerky shifts during acceleration or low-speed maneuvers
- Dashboard warnings such as “Transmission Error” or “Engine Power
- Reduced” accompanying transmission issues
Owners have described this problem as “the transmission intermittently fails to engage reverse; when reverse is selected, the vehicle sometimes goes into neutral.” Another stated, “The check engine light and multiple warnings suddenly appeared. It said ‘transmission error’ and ‘engine power reduced,’ and the car just shut down with the kids inside.”
#3: Warning Lights and Electronic System Malfunctions
Owners frequently report that multiple warning lights and alert systems malfunction simultaneously.
Typical indicators include:
- Check engine light, transmission error, and power reduced warnings
- Automatic emergency braking (AEB), blind spot, and forward collision warnings flashing or remaining active
- Brake light failures depending on headlight settings
- Rearview camera lag or failure to activate when shifting to reverse
- “No Key Detected” message despite key fob being inside the vehicle
An owner noted
“My kids and I were stuck in a brand new vehicle that would not drive across the tracks. I pulled over unable to get fully off the road and turned the car off and on again and was able to drive it back home without further incident but the AEB warning light remained on until I got home.” Another explained, “While driving approximately 70 MPH, there were audible beeps, and a message flashed on the instrument cluster that the “Forward Collision Avoidance” system had failed.”
#4: Unintended Acceleration and Braking Concerns
Safety-critical systems such as braking and acceleration controls have generated serious complaints. Reports include sudden accelerator pedal sticking and erratic brake light operation.
Reported problems include:
- Gas pedal sticking to the floor due to all-weather floor mats obstructing the pedal
- Brake lights failing to illuminate except under certain lighting modes
- Unexpected vehicle acceleration requiring immediate braking intervention
- Parking assist systems randomly activating brakes or accelerating unexpectedly
One harrowing report stated
“Since purchase, the vehicle has had repeated brake failures, unintended acceleration, lighting malfunctions, and electronic system defects. Problems are intermittent but worsening, creating a serious safety risk.” Another described, “Parking assist randomly activates upon startup with all sensors lit and beeping, requiring a restart to clear.”
#5: Spontaneous Glass Breakage
Lastly, I found that some owners have experienced sudden and unexplained glass failures in their Pathfinder.
Patterns include:
- Rear side window or panoramic sunroof glass shattering spontaneously while parked or driving
- Glass breaking without impact or visible cause, showering shards inside the vehicle
- Safety risk to passengers from falling glass shards
An owner reported
“There was no evidence of vandalism, collision, or falling objects, and the vehicle was stationary at the time. The glass shattered entirely, leaving shards throughout the interior cargo area and rendering the vehicle unsafe to drive or leave unattended.” Another explained, “While driving along a 2-lane country road the glass in the panoramic sunroof suddenly exploded. Glass shards rained down into the passenger compartment.”
