What 2024 Nissan Pathfinder Owners Are Dealing With: Stalling in Traffic and Leaking Roofs
Problem analysis of the 2024 Nissan Pathfinder found issues including engine stalling at idle, sunroof water leaks, premature rear brake wear, transmission and shifting failures, and electrical system malfunctions.

The Pathfinder is a favorite out there. I like it too.
As part of my practice as a lemon law attorney, I constantly research car problems and share them here to educate owners. For the 2024 Nissan Pathfinder, I reviewed NHTSA complaints, owner feedback, and our own internal data, and a few recurring issues stood out enough to put this breakdown together.
Keep in mind this is just focusing on the small percentage of vehicles that will run into problems. The majority of Pathfinder owners are out there driving with zero or minimal issues.

Most Common Problems with the 2024 Nissan Pathfinder
In my research of multiple data sources, including verified consumer complaints, NHTSA reports, and my firm’s internal data, I found the following recurring issues for the 2024 Pathfinder:
- Engine Stalling and Idle Shut-Off Failures: Vehicles unexpectedly stall or shut off while idling or in stop-and-go traffic, sometimes failing to restart promptly, causing dangerous driving conditions.
- Sunroof and Roof Leak Water Leaks: Water leaks through the sunroof or roof rails, damaging the interior headliner, ceiling lights, and electronic components, with dealers often unable to provide lasting repairs.
- Premature Rear Brake Wear and Electronic Brake Force Issues: Rear brake pads wear abnormally fast—often within 12,000 to 26,000 miles—with some evidence pointing to electronic brake force distribution malfunctions causing unpredictable braking.
- Transmission Malfunctions and Shifting Failures: Random transmission failures, including slipping out of gear, whining noises, and complete loss of drive power, leading to hazardous situations on hills or highways.
- Electrical System and Sensor Failures: Frequent problems with battery drain, key fob errors, sensor malfunctions disabling safety systems such as forward collision warning, and interior electronic glitches.

Top Problem #1: Engine Stalling and Idle Shut-Off Failures
I found that many owners report the Pathfinder’s engine stalling or shutting off while the vehicle is stationary or idling. These events typically occur at stop lights, in parking lots, or during stop-and-go traffic conditions.
Common symptoms include:
- Engine suddenly dies without warning while idling or stopped
- Difficulty restarting; vehicle may crank repeatedly before firing up
- Rough or sputtering engine immediately after restart
- Dashboard warning lights may not illuminate prior to stall
One owner described, “While driving at an undisclosed speed, the engine made abnormal sounds, and the vehicle stalled. No warning light was illuminated.” Another recounted four separate stall events where the vehicle had to be towed after failing to restart. Dealers often cannot duplicate the problem, as it does not occur consistently during service visits.

Top Problem #2: Sunroof and Roof Leak Water Intrusion
I have reviewed numerous reports and owner accounts describing recurring water leaks through the sunroof or roof rail clips on the 2024 Pathfinder. These leaks cause water damage to the interior headliner, ceiling lights, infotainment system, and sometimes lead to mold growth.
Common symptoms include:
- Water dripping inside cabin during or after rain
- Dealership repairs involving clearing drain tubes, resealing, or replacing parts provide only temporary relief
- Some owners have made 3 to 5 service visits without a permanent fix
- Persistent musty or moldy odors inside the vehicle
One frustrated owner shared, “During inclement weather, rainwater was entering the on the left and right side of the vehicle and the middle console.” Despite Nissan corporate being aware of these leaks, dealers follow inconsistent procedures. This defect poses long-term risk for electrical damage and diminished vehicle value.
Top Problem #3: Premature Rear Brake Wear and Brake Force Issues
Premature rear brake wear is a significant problem found in both owner complaints and NHTSA data. Rear brake pads have been reported to wear down metal-to-metal well before 30,000 miles, while front pads remain nearly new.
Indicators of this problem include:
- Rear brake pads require replacement as early as 12,000 to 26,000 miles
- Dealerships and manufacturer often classify this as normal wear, refusing warranty repairs
- Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) system may be misapplying brakes unexpectedly, causing uneven pad wear and unsafe braking events
- Owners report sudden braking without driver input, increasing accident risk
One complaint reads, “Very unusual and excessive rear brake pads and rotor decay. I was asked by dealership to replace brake pads and rotor just at 22,000 miles. Then after, they are asking to replace again just after another 19,000 miles. The automatic brake sometimes gets scary, get too close to the front vehicle without reducing speed while driving in cruise control mode.”
Top Problem #4: Transmission Malfunctions and Shifting Failures
Multiple owners describe dangerous transmission issues involving slipping out of gear, failure to shift, and sudden loss of power during acceleration or climbing hills.
Reported symptoms include:
- Transmission suddenly shifts from drive into neutral while moving
- Transmission whining noises, often preceding failure
- Loss of acceleration or inability to move despite pressing the gas pedal
- Complete transmission failure causing vehicle to roll uncontrolled
An owner recounted, “My main concern is i was coming up a hill into a 4 land highway and my car would not shift, the transmission was whining loud? I had to shut my car off in the middle of 4 lanes with oncoming traffic to put it in park to get it to shift back into drive to get out of harms way. This happened 4 more times. When it whines, it’s almost as if the car transmission would blow.”
Top Problem #5: Electrical System and Sensor Failures
Electrical malfunction complaints are widespread for the 2024 Pathfinder. These include battery drain, key fob detection errors, malfunctioning safety sensors, and issues with infotainment and control modules.
Typical issues observed:
- “Key cannot be detected” and “i-key system error” messages disabling vehicle start
- Frequent battery replacements due to unexplained drainage
- Collision avoidance sensors intermittently fail, disabling automatic emergency braking and forward collision warnings
- Dashboard error lights for ABS, traction control, and engine malfunction occurring randomly
- Stop/start system failing by shutting engine off and not restarting instantly
One owner stated, “Engine, ABS, Collison, Traction Control malfunction lights came on. I took it to the dealership and it was determined that the right wheel sensor was reading at 407 mph. After replacing the sensor, the lights came on within minutes of me leaving the dealership.” Another reported, “Nissan dealers who replaced windshield wipers. The problem has still continued after replacing three sets of windshield wipers blades. The windshield has been washed with Windex and film remover and film still remains.”
So What Can You Do Do If Your 2024 Pathfinder Is a Lemon
A lemon vehicle is one that has a substantial defect that impairs its use, value, or safety and which the manufacturer fails to fix after a reasonable number of repair attempts. If your 2024 Pathfinder has recurring issues such as engine stalls, transmission failures, or persistent leaks despite multiple dealer visits, it may qualify under your state’s lemon law.
To protect your rights, I recommend:
- Document every problem thoroughly, including dates, repair attempts, and communications with the dealer
- Retain copies of all repair orders, service bulletins, and diagnostic reports
- Submit formal complaints to the manufacturer and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
- Consult an attorney experienced in lemon law to review your case and advise on next steps
