2023 Genesis GV70 Problems and Top Complaints – Is Your Car A Lemon?
Powertrain, forward collision avoidance, and fuel/propulsion system issues are among the main causes of complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners
Launched in 2022, the Genesis GV70 is now punted as an award-winning luxury car. While it has gained recognition from a top motoring publication, it has also gained attention from owners who are faced with major problems. In keeping with the launch model, owners of the 2023 GV70 are complaining about vehicles that suddenly lose power or won’t accelerate. There are also complaints relating to faulty cruise control, collision warnings, and uncontrollable acceleration.

Most Common Problems
Like the 2022 Genesis GV70, the most common problems owners of the 2023 model are experiencing relate to the powertrain and related components. Mostly, the complaints describe how the “premium urban SUV,” as Genesis calls it, loses power or the ability to accelerate. However, in direct contradiction, there is also a complaint about a 2023 GV70 accelerating “uncontrollably.”
There is not much information in the latter complaint. An owner from Florida simply says that “while at a stop sign and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle accelerated uncontrollably.” Several warning lights illuminated, though the owner wasn’t able to identify what they were. The GV70, which had only 834 miles on the clock, was towed to the dealer. But they were unable to identify a cause or reason for the failure.
While some of the complaints lodged with the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) are filed under Powertrain, others are under Engine, Forward Collision Avoidance, Fuel/Propulsion System, and/or Vehicle Speed Control.
Additionally, a recall that was originally issued for 978 Hyundai vehicles, including the 2022 Genesis GV70, in October 2021, has been extended to 65,517 Hyundai vehicles including the 2023 GV70. The reason for these recalls is the danger that seat belt pretensioners may explode. If it does, metal fragments could be projected into the vehicle, like shrapnel, striking occupants and injuring them.

Forward Collision Avoidance: Adaptive Cruise Control
When an owner from Michigan was unable to accelerate because of loss of power, there was a whirling, clicking sound and the electric motor was making a noise. The complaint states that the right turn blinker, Lane Keep Assist, and Lane Follow Assist were all active. The GV70 was moving at less than 10 mph, so the driver could pull to the side of the road. He put the car in Park and then back to Drive. “Unable to accelerate above an estimated 10 mph,” he contacted a Genesis services agent who recommended restarting the engine. This worked, and he put the car in Reverse for a short distance. He then changed to Drive and could accelerate to a road speed of 55 mph. He identified the problem as being an engine and/or fuel/propulsion issue.
Interestingly, while a Utah owner didn’t know what was causing a sudden loss of power, the dealership said it was a fuel pump and water pump issue.
The SUV had only 20 miles on the clock when he bought it. Driving home, “within the first 15 miles, and merging onto a freeway, the motor cut out and we were almost rear-ended. The sudden loss of power nearly caused a significant accident.” On January 28, 2023, after replicating the issue several times, he took the car to a dealership. “We were told it was a fuel pump and water pump issue and they were seeing it in about 20% of the new cars. As of 2/17/23, we are still without our new car as it has been at the dealership since waiting for new parts. The dealership and the manufacturer knew of this issue and continued to sell and let people drive off their lots in potentially unsafe cars.”

Forward Collision-Avoidance Issues
A complaint filed as a powertrain, vehicle speed control, and forward collision avoidance issue by a Californian owner relates to loss of power and faulty cruise control. It states that if you press the cruise control button for more than 2 seconds when the cruise control is off, the speed limit function activates. If the GV70 exceeds the limit speed and the driver tries to accelerate, the power cuts off and a warning bell sounds.
If the cruise control is on, when you keep pressing the button, the car sometimes slows down and continues to slow when you release the button. But sometimes it remains engaged. If you try to accelerate, the power cuts out. To restore power, you have to “press and release the cruise control button to deactivate the cruise control. It’s as though the cruise control gets into a mode where it won’t hold speed, and pressing on the gas does nothing. This seems like a software bug.” This only happens if cruise control is on or when in the Normal (non-limit) mode. If it isn’t activated, power is always available.
“It seems counterintuitive that accelerating manually by pressing on the gas is overridden when in the Limit mode. I don’t know if this is a design feature or a flaw. The vehicle lost power several times in traffic – and at that time do not believe the cruise control was being used The dealer says they cannot ascertain the problem and have referred it to an executive higher-level.”
Collision Warnings
Another owner from California has experienced collision warnings 3 times. Each time the SUV was traveling under 30 mph with no proximate vehicles when it “began to intermittently brake and the dash flashed ‘collision warning.” Twice, he was able to pull over, turn off the car and restart successfully. The third time he kept driving, “bucking along at 10 mph, and after about 50 yards the warning went away.” The dealer was unable to find an issue. “They tell me they have to see it while it happens.”

I purchased a 2023 Gv70. First the car’s trim clear coat was fading or coming out so the dealer put on new trim. Second, I was trying to avoid a pot hole and the car has alignment features if you drift out of lane, it pushes you back which is good but in my case, it pushed me back into the pothole and messed up the wheel so I had to pay for a new one out if pocket. And now it has been 2 times the car goes crazy and gives me 8 warnings in the dash and didn’t drive accordingly and the engine light was on. So this time I called a tow truck because I felt unsafe driving the car and its been a week and they don’t know what’s wrong. I sent them a video of what the car was doing. I’m still waiting for answers! What I can do? The car only have 5,000 miles

I purchase the 2023 GV70 at Virginia Beach Genesis at 30 miles I begin to notice the involuntary acceleration while attempting to park at the shopping mall. Happened once again at 300 plus miles. The lane assist and cruise control turns on automatically. The vehicle has been in service twice and returning back into service again. So far the manufacturer or service department has not been able to detect the problem. I am furious.
