The 2025 Toyota Tacoma Has Some Issues. Here’s What the Data Shows
Problem analysis of the 2025 Toyota Tacoma found issues including transmission shifting difficulties, axle failures and software glitches.

Key Points
- Our team analyzed real consumer complaints and NHTSA data to identify commonly reported problems with the 2025 Toyota Tacoma.
- Owners most often reported harsh transmission shifting, front axle or drive shaft failures, unstable steering and suspension concerns, and audio or multimedia system bugs.
- Owners with repeated or unresolved defects may have rights under state lemon laws, including a possible refund, replacement, or compensation.
The Tacoma transmission issue has been widely covered in recent years, so I already had a good idea of what I would find going into the research for this piece.
As a lemon law attorney, I spend a lot of time digging through NHTSA complaints, owner forums, and our own internal data. The transmission complaints were there as expected, but there is also an active front axle recall worth knowing about if you own one of these trucks.
My name is Sergei Lemberg, and I have over twenty years of experience representing consumers in vehicle defect cases. As always, not all Tacomas will experience these issues. These are simply the most commonly reported defects, likely affecting a small percentage of vehicles.
Let’s get started.

Most Common Problems
Several data sources reveal recurring issues reported by 2025 Toyota Tacoma owners. Based on complaint frequency and severity, the primary problems include:
- Harsh Transmission Shifting: Owners report hard, delayed, or bumpy gear changes especially between 2nd and 3rd gears, sometimes accompanied by slipping or gear hunting.
- Front Axle and Drive Shaft Failures: Recalls are active for front axle shafts that may break unexpectedly, creating safety risks and leaving trucks undriveable.
- Unstable Steering and Suspension Defects: Complaints include pulling to one side, vibrations, uneven tire wear, and unsafe body roll caused by improper wheel alignment or structural deviations.
- Audio and Multimedia System Bugs: Frequent Apple CarPlay disconnections and freezes affect hands-free operation and create safety concerns.

Top Problem #1: Harsh Transmission Shifting
I found harsh transmission shifting to be the most frequently reported issue. Most owners are concerned about the unpredictable acceleration and delayed gear engagement.
- Symptoms include hard downshifts, clunky gear changes, and delayed response when coming to a stop.
- Owners describe gear hunting where the transmission shifts repeatedly between gears during normal driving.
- Some note that early mornings bring the worst symptoms, especially when shifting from first to second gear.
Direct owner quotes from NHTSA complaints:
“I took the car into the shop for transmission, hard shift issue and I had them look at the overheating as well and they found an overheating was caused from harsh acceleration”
“Transmission problems slipping and clunky at only 1800 miles, vibration when accelerating, coasting or braking 25-45mph. Driveline issue that affects performance of the truck.”
“The Service Member with Carver Toyota “test drove” and confirmed that the vehicle shifted harshly from park to reverse and from 2nd to 3rd gear.”

Top Problem #2: Front Axle and Drive Shaft Failures
Owners have reported driveline failures, especially involving the front axle shafts covered under active safety recalls. Toyota issued this recall in late 2025, with interim letters mailed to owners in November 2025. The recall, NHTSA Recall No. 25V656, covers certain 2025 Tacoma and Tacoma Hybrid vehicles and acknowledges that the front driveshaft CV joint may deform and break while driving.
Dealers are directed to inspect and replace both front driveshaft assemblies free of charge. However, the final remedy is not yet available and is expected in late May 2026. In the meantime, many owners report waiting months at dealerships with no fix.
Here are what owners are experiencing with this issue:
- Symptoms include grinding noises when turning at low speeds, sudden inability to move the vehicle in 4-wheel-drive mode, and clunking sounds during normal driving.
- Several trucks have had front axle shafts or drive shafts break within the first few thousand miles, resulting in the vehicle being towed and out of service.
Owner quotes include:
“The front axle shafts, potentially breaking. The manufacturer has confirmed the recall and that a remedy is not yet available. The vehicle has been at a Toyota dealership and out of service for an extended period while waiting for a repair solution.”
“The vehicle was being operated in 4-wheel-drive, mode 4H, and when turning to the left at low speed, there was a grinding noise from the front of the vehicle and it would not proceed.”
Top Problem #3: Unstable Steering and Suspension Defects
I reviewed multiple complaints about steering instability and suspension geometry defects affecting the ride and safety of the Tacoma.
- Reports include pulling to one side, inability to maintain a straight line, and excessive body roll and vibrations on both smooth and rough roads.
- Unequal wheelbase measurements and out-of-spec caster angles indicate potential structural or assembly flaws.
- Tire wear is abnormal and uneven, increasing replacement frequency and costs for owners.
Owners shared:
“Steering control feels unstable, and the vehicle experiences abnormal harshness and vertical movement over the road surface. The vehicle often feels difficult to control and demonstrates behavior consistent with lateral misalignment, including a crab-walking sensation.”
“The vehicle has been presented to four different Toyota authorized dealerships for the same steering and suspension-related concerns. Multiple wheel alignments, steering calibrations, inspections, and road tests were performed. Despite these repeated repair attempts, the condition persists.”
Top Problem #4: Audio and Multimedia System Bugs
Many Tacoma owners report ongoing issues with the advanced Audio Multimedia 6.0 system. These tech defects impact connectivity and driver convenience.
- Apple CarPlay frequently disconnects at startup or randomly while driving.
- The multimedia interface freezes, crashes, or fails to recognize connected devices.
- Dealerships acknowledge the problem but currently have no permanent software or hardware fix.
A comment from an owner:
“CarPlay will drop connection, the system freezes, or CarPlay will not appear as an available input for long periods. Toyota dealerships acknowledge the problem but currently have no permanent fix. It appears to be a system-wide defect in the Audio Multimedia 6.0 system used in the new Tacomas”
What Should You Do If Your 2025 Toyota Tacoma Is a Lemon?
Under state lemon laws, a vehicle with a substantial defect that impairs its use, value or safety and cannot be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts can qualify for legal relief. The 2025 Toyota Tacoma’s recurring problems, particularly with transmission, driveline, and critical safety systems, may meet this definition for many owners.
If your Tacoma exhibits chronic problems, I recommend:
- Documenting all issue symptoms, repair attempts, and communications with dealers or Toyota.
- Filing formal complaints with the dealership and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
- Tracking repair timelines, especially if the vehicle is out of service for extended periods.
