2024 Toyota Corolla Problems: Toyota’s Best Seller Isn’t Without Its Issues
Problem analysis of the 2024 Toyota Corolla found issues including transmission delays, engine stalling, electrical malfunctions, and steering defects.

Toyota and reliability go hand in hand, and the Corolla is at the center of that reputation. It is one of the best-selling cars in the world for a reason.
As a lemon law attorney, I spend a lot of time digging through NHTSA complaints, owner forums, and our own internal data. When I started looking at the 2024 Corolla, a few recurring issues stood out. Transmission hesitation, engine stalling, and steering defects were showing up consistently enough across multiple sources to take seriously. This is not a knock on the car.
The vast majority of owners are happy with theirs. This piece is specifically about the small percentage who are not.
My name is Sergei Lemberg, and I have over twenty years of experience representing consumers in vehicle defect cases. I summarized my research below. Let’s get started!

Most Common Problems
Here’s what I found as the top issues for the 2024 Corolla.
- Transmission Hesitation and Jerking: Delayed acceleration from a stop and jerking during city speeds, often linked to the CVT transmission.
- Engine Stalling and Warning Lights: Sudden engine shutdowns accompanied by dashboard warnings such as “Drive Start Control Malfunction” and “Check Engine.”
- Steering Defects: Steering wheels failing to return to center, binding zones causing manual correction needs, and occasional unintended steering movements.
- Electrical and Battery Issues: Repeated 12-volt battery failures, electrical malfunctions, and erratic electronic system warnings.
- Headlight and Visibility Problems: Low beam headlights causing shadows and obstructing roadway visibility, especially on curves.
Other minor reported concerns include window breakage, rattling noises at idle, and safety systems reacting unexpectedly.

Top Problem #1: Transmission Hesitation and Jerking
I found that transmission issues are the most commonly reported defect for the 2024 Corolla. The CVT transmission, in particular, shows signs of delayed acceleration and jerky movement, especially at low speeds.
Symptoms reported by owners include:
- Delay of about one second before the car moves after pressing the accelerator.
- Jerking or shuddering between 20 and 40 mph.
- A loss of power or hesitation when climbing hills or merging into traffic.
- Droning or abnormal noises coming from the transmission area at low speeds.
One owner described the experience: “This is an issue I have noticed with my car shortly after I bought it. The problem is that the car has a noticeable delay in acceleration when accelerating from a complete stop.” Another recalled, “The car stop and jerked me so hard and slammed forward so hard. Thankfully I was in an empty open parking lot.”

Top Problem #2: Engine Stalling and Warning Lights
Engine stalling while driving and simultaneous dashboard warning lights represent a serious safety concern for many Corolla owners. I reviewed multiple reports of engine shutdowns with messages like “Drive Start Control Malfunction,” “Check Engine,” and “See Dealer.”
Common symptoms include:
- Engine suddenly shutting off while the vehicle is in motion.
- Loss of power steering and brakes during the stall.
- Multiple warning lights cycling on and off.
- Car requiring a restart before it can be driven again.
One owner recounted, “The vehicle was in motion and stalled while other vehicles were in motion putting my safety at risk, had I been going any faster or if there was an increased amount of traffic. I reported the problem to the dealer service center, but they were unable to reproduce it.”
Top Problem #3: Steering Defects
Steering issues reported by 2024 Corolla owners involve the steering wheel failing to return fully to center after turns and sticks in certain positions, requiring constant driver correction.
Reported symptoms include:
- Steering wheel stopping off-center by half an inch to over one inch.
- Binding zones near the center that resist smooth steering adjustments.
- Unexpected steering pull or “floaty” feeling on highways or curves.
- Episodes of the steering locking momentarily or pulling while driving.
One complaint stated, “The steering feels “floaty” and lacks the expected resistance to return to center. This issue began abruptly around 8,000-9,000 miles. Multiple dealership visits and alignment checks have not resolved it.”
Top Problem #4: Electrical and Battery Issues
Electrical malfunctions are another frequent complaint, particularly involving the 12-volt battery and electronic warnings.
Symptoms include:
- Repeated battery failures requiring multiple replacements within short periods.
- Malfunctioning driver assistance systems, such as blind spot monitors failing intermittently.
- Error messages and malfunction lights for parking brake, hybrid system, and power steering systems.
- Inconsistent resolution of issues by dealerships despite repeated service visits.
One owner shared, “The second time, the exact same problem reoccurred. I had the vehicle towed again to a Toyota dealership, but this time, they refused to perform diagnostics unless I paid out of pocket for a 12-volt battery replacement. The dealership stated they cannot confirm if the issue is recall-related until diagnostics are complete, but they also refuse to complete diagnostics without me paying first.”
Top Problem #5: Headlight and Visibility Problems
I have also noted complaints about the low beam headlights on the 2024 Corolla creating shadows that obscure the driver’s view at night, posing a safety risk.
Owner-reported issues include:
- Shadows and dark spots on curves and bends in the road, reducing visibility.
- Inability to see properly without switching to high beams, which risks blinding oncoming traffic.
- Dealer and manufacturer dismissing the problem as “normal design.”
One consumer said, “Headlights create blind spot in front of the car at night at 50meters to 100m by Toyota engineer design. Toyota customer care and the dealer maintenance manager is saying the design is safety tested and approved. It needs to be retested at night!!! This is a clear design defect. It is especially dangerous curving left & making left turns on two way back roads and highways.”
What Should You Do If Your 2024 Corolla Is a Lemon?
If your vehicle experiences these kinds of persistent, serious defects, it may qualify as a lemon under your state’s consumer protection laws. I want you to understand what that means. A lemon vehicle is one that has a substantial defect covered by warranty that either severely impairs use, value, or safety and cannot be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts.
I recommend that you take the following steps:
- Document all problems carefully, including dates, symptoms, and repair attempts.
- Keep all service records, repair orders, and dealer correspondence.
- File a complaint with the manufacturer and regulatory agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
If your vehicle keeps having serious problems despite repairs, you have legal options including seeking a replacement or refund under lemon laws. I encourage you to contact Lemberg Law for a free consultation. We handle these complex cases on a contingency basis, so you pay nothing unless we win your case. Timing is critical because lemon law claims often have strict deadlines.
