Key Points

  • Our team analyzed real consumer complaints and federal safety data to identify commonly reported problems with the 2024 Nissan Altima.
  • Owners most often report backup camera defects, CVT transmission failures, engine stalling or shutdowns, airbag deployment concerns, and steering or brake problems.
  • Owners with repeated or unresolved defects may have rights under state lemon laws, including a possible refund, replacement, or compensation.

As part of my role as a lemon law attorney, I dig into car problems from all sources: our firm’s internal data, government filings, and social media. I spend hours on this.

One thing that jumped out when I started researching the 2024 Nissan Altima was the backup camera complaints. Owners are describing foggy, distorted, and sometimes completely blank displays. I know what some people might say: so what, it’s just a camera. But a backup camera is a basic safety feature at this point, and when it doesn’t work properly on a brand-new vehicle, that’s a problem worth talking about.

My name is Sergei Lemberg, and I have over twenty years of experience representing consumers in vehicle defect cases. As always, not all Altimas will experience these issues. These are simply the most commonly reported defects, likely affecting a small percentage of vehicles.

Most Common Problems

My research found the following as the top issues for 2024 Altima owners:

  • Backup Camera Defects: The camera displays are foggy, unclear, or sometimes blank, posing safety concerns.
  • Transmission Issues: CVT transmission failures and sudden loss of power have been reported, occasionally rendering the vehicle undriveable.
  • Airbags Failures – Front and side curtain airbags failing to deploy in major collisions despite no prior warning lights or fault codes
  • Engine Failures: Owners report engine hesitation, stalling, and complete shutdowns often accompanied by warning lights.
  • Steering and Brake Concerns: Reports include loss of electric power steering and improper brake assembly causing safety hazards.

Top Problem #1: Backup Camera Defects

To start us off, I found numerous complaints regarding backup camera quality and reliability. The system often displays a white fog or haze that worsens at night or during bad weather, severely limiting visibility. Reported problems include:

  • Blurry, low-resolution, or distorted backup camera images
  • Camera displays going blank or showing solid colors such as pink or orange
  • Poor image clarity compared to other Nissan models and previous Altimas

An owner noted

“Found the backup camera safety component display to have a poor-quality, low resolution, distorted image.” Several reported concerns about whether these cameras meet proper safety standards, given their critical role in preventing collisions.

Top Problem #2: Transmission Issues

The continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) in the 2024 Altima have drawn significant criticism. Owners report sudden transmission failures, jerking motions, and complete loss of power.
Symptoms include:

  • Illuminated check engine and transmission warning lights
  • Vehicle slowing down unexpectedly with reduced acceleration
  • Transmission components failing due to manufacturing defects
  • Drive shaft dropping into catalytic converter in severe cases

One report described

“I was able to step aside and the transmission box stopped working and I had to request towing service to the dealership and today they called me to tell me they need to replace the transmission.” Another owner shared that despite repeated repairs, the problem persisted, causing extended periods the car was out of service.

Top Problem #3: Engine Failures

I found that the Altima’s engine exhibits serious reliability problems. These engines are new variable compression technology that promised fuel efficiency but have generated widespread complaints. Common symptoms reported by owners include:

  • “Engine Malfunction” warnings accompanied by “Power Reduced” and “Service Now” messages on the dashboard
  • Sudden engine stalling or shutdown while driving
  • Failure to restart after stalling
  • High-pitched whirring noises and rough idling
  • Loss of power or hesitation during acceleration

One owner said

“My 2024 Nissan Altima completely shut off while my wife was driving the car down a very busy road. She narrowly miss being struck by another while attempting to navigate to the center lane of a busy highway with no power.”

Top Problem #4: Airbags Failing to Deploy

Airbag failures are among the most serious defects I come across for this piece, and the 2024 Altima has generated complaints worth flagging. To be clear, this does not appear to be a widespread pattern at this time, but any airbag failure is serious enough to document and report.

Symptoms reported include:

  • Airbags failing to deploy in significant collisions
  • Front and side curtain airbags not activating despite major impacts
  • No prior warning lights or fault codes in the airbag system before the crash
  • Vehicles totaled in collisions with no airbag deployment

One owner filed a complaint after their Altima was struck by a vehicle traveling at high speed. Despite the severity of the impact and both occupants wearing seatbelts, none of the airbags deployed. They wrote: “The lack of airbag deployment in a crash of this magnitude presents a serious safety concern and a potential defect in the SRS. There were no warning lights or prior faults reported in the airbag system before the crash.”

Top Problem #5: Steering and Brake Concerns

Lastly owners note safety issues involving steering and braking systems. These include:

  • Intermittent or total loss of electric power steering, making the vehicle difficult to control
  • Loud smoke and stiff steering before accidents
  • Improper brake assembly, such as mismatched or upside-down brake pads
  • Phantom braking due to malfunctioning automatic emergency braking sensors
One report stressed

“Steering becomes tight and feels to lock up with no control. Happened 2 times previously, 3rd time resulted in a crash.” Another reported that dealership inspections failed to identify incorrect brake components that compromised safety.

What Should You Do If Your Altima Is a Lemon?

If your 2024 Nissan Altima repeatedly experiences significant defects that impair its use, safety, or value, it may qualify as a lemon under your state’s consumer protection laws. I recommend you begin by documenting all issues carefully, including repair orders, dates, and communications with Nissan or dealerships.

Filing complaints with the manufacturer and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration helps create an official record of the problem and may support your claim.
