The Ford Expedition is regarded as the automaker’s flagship SUV, and not much has changed since the previous model year. There isn’t a large volume of complaints, but some are serious. These range from electrical system issues and various visibility problems to sunroofs shattering and vehicles accelerating spontaneously. Owners who have experienced problems are very concerned.
Complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the 2024 Ford Expedition are varied, but issues with the electrical system and visibility/wipers top the list. Other frequently reported concerns include vehicle speed control and service brakes. Many of these problems raise serious safety concerns.
Additional complaints highlight the fuel/propulsion system, powertrain, steering, structure, suspension, and wheels. A few reports labeled as “unknown or other” involve sunroofs shattering and at least one case where a 2024 Expedition was sold despite an undisclosed recall.
Vehicle problems often develop over time. That’s why monitoring NHTSA complaints is important—and we do that for you.
By March 2025, three recalls had been issued for the 2024 Ford Expedition, involving the airbags and the engine cooling system:
Airbag Warning Label Recall: Affects 27,678 Ford vehicles, including the Expedition. The missing dashboard label may leave occupants without critical restraint usage guidelines, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
Engine Oil Leak Recall (Nov 2024): Affects 2,490 vehicles. Incorrectly installed engine cup plugs may leak oil, raising the risk of both engine stalling and fire.
Expanded Recall (Mar 2025): Updates and extends the engine plug recall to include 4,163 vehicles.

Electrical System Problems
Electrical complaints range from software glitches to more unusual cases involving soy-based wiring attracting rodents. One New Hampshire owner reported a powered running board malfunction that crushed a passenger’s ankle:
“It closed while my husband was resting his right foot on it… When I opened the right rear door, the running board released.”
In New York, an owner said rodents chewed through eight soy-based wiring harnesses. The repair wasn’t covered, and the cost was reportedly too high to afford.
A Montana buyer said he was told a pulsing third brake light was mandatory. Later, he learned it violated NHTSA rules:
“The dealership claimed the Pulse brake light was a required add-on. It’s not.”
Visibility Problems
Owners report problems with driver-side window switch controllers, malfunctioning windshield wipers, and pixelated rearview cameras.
In April 2025, an owner said the driver’s side window controller stopped working entirely:
“I can’t close the window, fold/unfold mirrors, or adjust them. It’s a safety issue.”
In Colorado, a software update failed to fix malfunctioning wipers. The issue returned while driving in the rain:
“It’s a major safety issue that may affect many 2022–2024 Expeditions with the 15″ Sync 4 system.”
A Florida owner said the rearview camera was unusable at night. Ford acknowledged that some analog cameras produce grainy or fuzzy images on digital displays—but stated no repair is available since no recall has been issued.
Other Problems
Additional complaints include spontaneous acceleration, excessive shaking, and shattered sunroofs.
A rental driver in Florida reported the SUV accelerated from 60 to 80 mph without input while using adaptive cruise control.
Another complaint in April 2025 described cruise control settings triggering unexpected acceleration:
“The vehicle accelerates abruptly to 86 mph, regardless of the set speed. Very scary.”
A Kansas owner said a shattered sunroof claim was denied because he couldn’t prove nothing hit the glass:
“If it had been open, the glass would’ve hit me and my kids. It could’ve caused a wreck.”
