The 2025 Volvo EX90 Has a Charging Problem – And That’s Just the Start
Problem analysis of the 2025 Volvo EX90 found issues including charging failures, Bluetooth and hands-free calling disruptions, and digital key malfunctions.

Key Points
- Lemberg Law analyzed real consumer complaints, internal data, and NHTSA safety information to identify recurring problems reported by 2025 Volvo EX90 owners.
- The leading concern involves charging failures and GHCA component malfunctions, which owners commonly describe as charging stopping within minutes, “Charging Fault” warnings, loud banging during charging, and long repair delays.
- Owners also report issues involving sudden power loss and brake faults, Bluetooth and hands-free calling failures, and blank displays or driver aid warnings, and repeated or unresolved defects may qualify for lemon law remedies.
EVs are very popular. Lower maintenance costs, no gas prices, and the technology has come a long way.
But here is something I keep noticing as I dig into car problems across different models: charging issues show up constantly across EVs. Not all of them, and not all owners. But a notable percentage of EV owners do run into charging problems, and it comes up in our firm’s data more than you might expect.
I get it. The technology is still relatively new. I am not here to knock EVs. I am just reporting what the data shows and what I hear from people who reach out to our law firm.
The 2025 Volvo EX90 is one of those vehicles. I reviewed NHTSA complaints, owner feedback, and our own internal data to put this together.
My name is Sergei Lemberg, and I have over twenty years of experience representing consumers in vehicle defect cases. Let’s get started.
Most Common Problems
Here’s what my research found for the top issues for the 2025 EX90:
- Charging Failures and GHCA Component Malfunctions: The Grid to High Voltage Converter A (GHCA) fails repeatedly, preventing AC charging and causing long repair delays with parts backordered.
- Sudden Power Loss and Brake Faults: Unexpected shutdowns on highways and critical electrical faults causing loss of control and emergency situations.
- Bluetooth, Hands-Free Calling, and Infotainment System Issues: Drivers report frozen screens, Bluetooth problems, CarPlay failures, and audio glitches.
- Display and driver aid faults: Some reports describe blank instrument clusters, camera faults, and Pilot Assist warnings.

#1: Charging Failures and GHCA Malfunctions
I found that the most severe and frequently reported problem with the EX90 involves the GHCA unit. This component converts AC power from home chargers to the high-voltage DC needed by the battery. Its failure results in an inability to charge on Level 1 or Level 2 chargers.
Owners describe the symptoms as follows:
- Charging begins but stops within minutes with a “Charging Fault” notification.
- Loud banging noises from under the vehicle during charging attempts.
- AC charging capability is completely lost, forcing exclusive use of costly DC fast chargers.
- Lengthy repair times due to repeated part failures and backordered replacements.
- Multiple GHCA failures occurring despite replacements under warranty.
One owner shared
“GHCA Failure that resulted in inability to charge the car.
Our EX90 will not charge with our installed Tesla Universal L2 charger. When the charger is connected to the vehicle, it appears to start charging for 2-3 minutes, then I get a Charging Fault, the charger tries to re-initialize, and this loop continues, all while not charging the car.”

#2: Sudden Power Loss and Safety-Related Faults
I found the most serious EX90 complaints involved sudden power loss while driving. These events raise the risk because they can happen at highway speed or in traffic.
- Unexpected deceleration or loss of acceleration while driving at freeway speeds.
- Dashboard displays going dark, including speedometer and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) information.
- Warnings such as “Critical Electric Fault,” “Critical Brake Fault,” and “Driver Support System Fault.”
- Loss of power brakes, turn signals, or emergency call functions.
- Cars defaulting to neutral gear or failing to park or turn off normally.
An owner described a near-catastrophic event
“While traveling at freeway speed, the vehicle suddenly lost power and displayed a warning stating “Critical Electrical Fault.” The car shut down in the middle of active traffic.” Another said, “Drivers display with vehicle speed and ADAS state goes blank while driving resulting in inability to see current speed or ADAS speed set point.”
#3: Bluetooth, Hands-Free Calling, and Infotainment Issues
Another widespread concern centers on the vehicle’s infotainment and communication systems. Common symptoms include:
- Hands-free calls sound half-duplex, similar to a walkie-talkie, where only one person can be heard at a time.
- Strong background noise and significant voice suppression during calls.
- Bluetooth audio freezes or stops working intermittently requiring infotainment system reboots.
- Calls drop or lack sound unexpectedly during use of CarPlay or Bluetooth.
An owner explained
“My Volvo EX90 has recurring software reliability problems affecting safety-related detection systems and hands-free operation features. These failures involve inconsistent or incorrect detection of vehicles and pedestrians and unpredictable loss of hands-free phone functionality.” Another said, “While driving on the highway, the entire digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen went completely black without warning. I could not see my speed, gear indicator, or use turn signals.” Dealers often attribute these issues to software glitches and provide temporary fixes via updates or reboots.
#4: Blank Displays, Camera Faults, and Driver Aid Warnings
Finally, I reviewed reports of black instrument clusters, frozen maps, camera failures, and warnings that disabled Pilot Assist or lane keeping aid. Common symptoms include:
- Driver seat side bolsters failing to function properly.
- Soft-close rear doors not fully latching or door handles retracting unexpectedly while unlocked.
- Tailgate control buttons ceasing to work after extended use.
- Interior trim issues such as missing seat track covers presenting potential safety hazards.
One complaint said
“the entire digital instrument cluster and infotainment screen went completely black without warning.” Another said the screen “went blank while driving resulting in inability to see current speed or ADAS speed set point.”
So What Can You Do If You Have a Lemon?
