Electrical System

  • Annoying VESS: The VESS (Virtual engine sound system) is mandatory because of the EV driving mode, but it’s louder than most homeowners’ associations will allow, leaving drivers worried about getting a fine. Even when drivers aren’t concerned with getting a fine, the noise is so loud and obnoxious that many of them will rush through reversing just to get it turned off, but that haphazard behavior can lead to an accident.
  • Strange dashboard warning lights: Owners have reported faulty dashboard warning signals that appear for no reason. There could be a short causing the warning that requires repair. In the meantime, the alarms cause panic and divert the driver’s attention from the road.

Forward Collision Avoidance

  • Faulty safety systems lead to accidents: There have been numerous reports of the forward collision avoidance system causing an accident. It accelerates and brakes abruptly while driving in traffic, making it unsafe to operate in some conditions.
  • Noisy operation during failure: One driver noticed a strange “whumping” sound right before the forward collision avoidance system failed. There were no dashboard warning lights and the noise continued for a couple of miles before the brakes slammed on. This occurred while driving 75-80 mph with no other cars around. Otherwise, a major accident may have been caused.

Powertrain

  • Lunging sensation: Users have complained about the transmission causing a lurching feeling, which can be troublesome at intersections. Failure appears to happen even with fewer than 500 miles on the odometer.
  • Grinding sounds: Drivers have stated that the transmission can sound like it’s grinding in some situations. It has also caused some stalling issues when the grinding occurs.

Structure/Seat Belt

  • Leaks water: Leaking water continues to be a prevalent issue with a windshield defect. Water infiltration is causing mold in the Tucson, which further exasperates respiratory conditions and leads to an awful smell in the cabin. The leak is also causing corrosion of wiring that results in electrical malfunctions.
  • Poorly designed turn signals: The rear turn signals sit so low that other vehicles behind the Tucson can’t see them. This defect has led many drivers to worry about being rear-ended when other people don’t notice that they are turning.
  • Flawed seat belts for child seats: The rear middle seat makes it impossible to install a car seat. It won’t tighten enough because the receiver is so long, leaving movement of the child seat. There weren’t any anchors installed for the middle seat, leaving a child’s safety compromised. When a rear passenger sits in this seat, the poor buckle design causes discomfort.
  • Lacking clear coat: Hyundai didn’t put a clear coat on the inner of the rear hatch jam or under the hood, leaving a scratchy, rough surface. The paint is going to fade in these places sooner and it looks poorly made.
  • Wind noise: Users have been complaining about the wind noise coming from the Tucson, immediately after ownership. Some people have found it to be from the front doors not fitting correctly, while others say it’s coming from the back of the SUV. Dealerships haven’t been able to rectify the problem and drivers want to turn the vehicle back in for something else.
