2024 HONDA CR-V

Heralded by the automaker as America’s best-selling crossover utility vehicle (CUV) since it was launched in 1997, the Honda CV-R has been the company’s best-selling vehicle every year since 2017. The question is, how does a best-selling vehicle end up having so many complaints to the NHTSA from disgruntled owners? These range from major steering and forward collision avoidance problems to significant safety issues with mirrors that crack and vibrate.

Most Common Problems

The most common complaint reported to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) about the 2024 Honda CR-V relates to steering problems. By the end of March 2025, more than 38% of the 319 complaints about the 2024 CR-V were about steering. Owners reported “sticky” or stiff steering, particularly at highway speeds, which can make the vehicle harder to control. This issue was linked to manufacturing defects in the steering gearbox, leading to increased internal friction. The NHTSA launched an investigation on November 29, 2023, into this problem, but closed it on January 28, 2025, after the automaker had recalled nearly 1.7 million vehicles, including the 2024 Honda CR-V, to address this problem by replacing the worm gear spring and adjusting the grease application as necessary.

Other Major Problems

There have also been a huge number of complaints regarding the driver’s side rearview mirror vibrating at speeds over 65 mph, causing distorted and shaky images that impair visibility. Additionally, many instances of side mirrors cracking in cold temperatures without any apparent impact have been reported.

Many owners have experienced malfunctions with the forward collision avoidance system, including false alarms or failure to detect obstacles, leading to unexpected braking or lack of warning in critical situations. These issues can compromise safety and have been a source of concern among drivers.

Problems with the lane-keeping assist system include the steering wheel shaking or becoming difficult to manage when the system is active. These malfunctions can lead to unintended lane departures and pose safety risks.

There are also relatively large numbers of complaints that relate to the fuel and fuel/propulsion system, lane departure, engine, and electrical system. Smaller numbers of complaints relate to the airbags, backover prevention, equipment, exterior lighting, latches/locks/linkages, powertrain, seat belts, seats, service brakes, structure, suspension, vehicle speed control, and wheels.

In addition to the steering-related recall, there is also a recall for 1,725 CR-V MY 2024 vehicles that lack the tire identification number (TIN) four-digit date code. When this information is missing, owners may not realize that their vehicles are involved in a safety recall. And if they continue driving on recalled tires, it can increase the risk of a crash.

Sticky Steering

Initially, there was a barrage of complaints that reported sticky or stiff steering problems. For example, an owner from Texas stated in November 2023 that the “steering started sticking, jerking and making a popping noise about 5,000 miles, and now at 6,900 miles it is getting worse. When going straight it is the most noticeable as it feels like the steering binds and then when I adjust to the left or the right it frees up and jerks so that I have to overcompensate and then it jerks in the other direction. At speeds below 10 mph, if I move the steering wheel left and right it makes a clunking sound. Randomly during a turn the steering sticks.” When it got worse, the dealer said it was the electronic power steering but the part was on backorder “so there is no immediate fix available.”

Honda issued its recall due to steering problems on October 3, 2024. However, nearly six months later, owners were complaining to the NHTSA that the parts required to do the recall were not yet available. Owners are concerned because there is a clear safety issue when it comes to driving vehicles with the “sticky” steering problem. For example, in February 2025, an owner from Pennsylvania complained stating, “I received a recall notice and tried to schedule service multiple times. It has been over 60 days and I have still not had the recall addressed.”

Another February 2025 complaint from New York states that having received notice about the recall, it took a month to get an appointment. Then, “the night before (that) the part was not available.” After 30 days, the owner contacted the dealership and was told they didn’t know when the parts would be available, and to expect a letter — which hadn’t arrived.

Cracking & Shaking Mirrors

Reported as unknown or other and visibility/wiper problems, mirror problems appear to be escalating in numbers.

Mirrors that Crack

As recently as March 2025, owners were appealing to the NHTSA for help. For example, “The driver’s side mirror cracked by itself when the vehicle was parked. Honda refused to warranty the mirror.”

Another March complaint states, “My driver’s side mirror spontaneously cracked. There was no damage done to the mirror that would cause this to happen. The mirror was intact when I pulled into my garage. An hour later I left again and the side mirror was cracked top to bottom.” The complaint also draws attention to the fact that the mirror didn’t shatter. “It’s simply a clean crack down the middle.”

An owner from North Carolina states that the “Driver-side outside side mirror spontaneously cracked from top to bottom while parked in the cold weather. There was no impact or other damage to cause such a crack. It makes it difficult to see to change lanes.”

Mirrors that Shake

An owner from West Virginia reports that “Both side mirrors shake vigorously while driving at any speed. It is very hard to focus and see the image in the side mirrors. Most of the time I have to use the rearview mirror to see behind me. The shaking is so severe that sometimes if I’m looking at the side mirror trying to see it will make my head hurt.”

Similarly, an owner from California states that the driver-side mirror “looks very distorted and shakes significantly when driving. The view from my driver-side mirror looks worse at night, which is when I do most of my driving. Headlights from other cars affect the view from my driver-side mirror and give off a terrible reflection. I have taken my vehicle to a Honda dealer and they stated they did not notice any distorted images or shaking. I have had this vehicle for barely 2 weeks and have had no luck in finding a solution.”

An owner from Arizona states that vibrations happen at speeds of 65 MPH or greater. “Vibrations cause the image in the mirror to distort and shake making it difficult to see important objects. The problem was confirmed by the same dealership that sold the car. The dealership replaced the driver side rearview mirror, but the replacement mirror has the same issue.”

Forward Collision Avoidance

Many owners have issued complaints to the NHTSA about so-called phantom braking.

An owner from California states, “When driving, the car will activate the emergency braking system, braking incredibly hard at freeway speeds and street driving speeds even though there is nothing near or close to the front of the car. The car has braked so intensely that items fly around the car and that both my son and I have experienced back, neck, and shoulder pain from the unexpected/severe braking.”

An owner from Maine states in a January 2025 complaint that he first experienced phantom braking a week after taking possession of his 2024 Honda CR-V. He didn’t report it initially, “as we thought it was something that we were doing or some sensitivity that the car typically exhibited. At random times, (the) car decelerates quickly as if pressing on brakes, or losing engine power (fuel supply, ignition, etc.), or downshifting quickly. After a few seconds, (the) car can be accelerated and it resumes speed. In virtually every case it has occurred on dry, clear roads with no vehicles or obstructions ahead.” He adds, “We are always in fear of being hit from behind by unsuspecting drivers. We’ve come to expect the hesitation/braking to happen and drive even more defensively.”

Examples of Problems that Cause Crashes

An owner from Michigan leases a 2024 CR-V Sport Hybrid. The first time there was an issue, “I backed out of a parking spot. When I applied the brakes there was no response and I drove into a parked car. No damage was done to it but I had an estimate of $2000.00 to mine since it was on the hatchback door. I didn’t report it because I thought it was my fault.”  But when he was parallel parking and reversed into a spot and straightened out my vehicle, “I put it into gear and started moving forward about six feet slowly. When I went to apply the brakes nothing happened again and I hit my wife’s car in front of me. The CR-V Owners Club has reported a similar incident.”

An owner from California complained to the NHTSA stating that his girlfriend “was driving at 65 mph when the collision avoidance activated and stopped 40 feet before reaching the vehicle in front. The driver noticed a vehicle driving at approximately 50 mph from the rear and attempted to avoid a collision however the vehicle failed to drive and remained at a halt. As a result, the vehicle was involved in a rear-end collision.” The airbags were not deployed, and the owner, who was a front passenger, sustained a herniated disc, neck, shoulder, spine, entire back, and urinary tract injuries. His girlfriend, who was the driver, sustained whiplash, back, neck, concussion, left arm, shoulder, spine, and right ankle injuries. Both of them required medical attention and they filed a police report.
