2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Problems and Top Complaints

Electrical system & brake issues are among the main causes of complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners

The Chevrolet Silverado nameplate makes up a group of trucks produced by General Motors. The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 is one of the heavy-duty variants of the full-size lineup. These trucks share a common platform and configuration with the GMC Sierra lineup.

The Silverado trucks have been among some of the best-selling pickups in America, with more than 12 million units sold since its debut in 1999. In fact, it’s possible for the Chevy lineup to exceed sales from Ford in 2023.

Most Common Problems

It didn’t take long for the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 to be released before a massive problem emerged. While many of the complaints are sharing similar information, we’ve grouped the issues into the electrical system and service brakes categories. Electrical System Problems

  • Needs new adapter: One driver was towing through the Kentucky mountains when several warnings came on saying, “Check Trailer Wiring,” “Trailer Brakes Disconnected,” and “Service Trailer Brakes.” The dealer informed the driver that it needed a special adapter to work correctly, which cost another $200. However, it’s puzzling why an adapter was added instead of resolving the underlying issue.
  • Trouble with 7-pin connectors: Another driver attempted to use multiple trailers with different 7-pin connectors and found the same warning messages occurred, no matter which trailer was used. GM informed this owner that a non-GM trailer receptacle is needed to fix the problem. Again, this solution is just a workaround that ignores the major issue.
  • Disconnecting trailer brakes: There’s an owner who used an old RAM to tow the trailer for many years. When upgrading to the new Silverado 2500, this driver found the same brake warnings with that camper. At the same time, trailering brakes are lost, posing a severe safety issue.
  • Phone connection suffers: Aside from the trailering brakes wiring problems, there’s also an issue with the Android Auto system. When a phone connects, the system believes it is making a call instead of playing music. The AC cuts out to reduce noise for the phone call. Yet, the driver making the complaint is in Arizona and needs air conditioning.

Brake Issues

  • Disconnecting Electronic trailer brake: It becomes unsafe to operate the truck with a trailer attached every time the brakes malfunction. Drivers have trouble stopping with a heavy trailer attached and GM has provided no fix for the problem.
  • Loss of brakes and lights: Other owners say in conjunction with trailer brake loss, all lights also stop working. Even with the tow package installed by the manufacturer, the LED lights and brakes fail to work properly. The only solution currently is to add an aftermarket part because GM won’t fix the issue.
  • Brakes fail with solar panels attached: One owner did their own research to discover that the trailer brakes would fail to work if the trailer had solar panels installed. To get the brakes working again, all of the solar panels needed to be disconnected while driving. During that time, the warning messages ceased and the trailer brakes worked perfectly. However, it’s a pain to ask owners to disconnect the solar panels every time they need to tow.
  • Vehicle skid due to brake loss: When the trailer brakes disconnect, owners have trouble controlling the truck and tow vehicles. One owner stated that they skidded and nearly lost control. It’s even more dangerous when drivers are operating the heavy-duty truck in the rain or other slick conditions.

    I’m ordering a 2024 2500 HD diesel in 4 weeks. Did Chevy address the solar panel on the RV trailer in connection of it AFFECTING THE BRAKE SYSTEM

    I just read the concerns that some Chevrolet Silverado 2500 owners have shared, and I too had the same experience with pulling my ’97 Wildwood rv trailer. Starting on a late Friday afternoon Labor day weekend getaway, I was alerted with the center dash displaying “Check Trailer Wiring” then “Trailer Brakes Disconnected” followed by “Service Trailer Brakes.” I had just performed a complete Brake replacement including Brake drums, and wheel bearings. To say the least I immediately pulled off the highway to investigate the problems. I found nothing visibly wrong but Disconnected the trailer wiring allowing the system to “reset” and attempted to drive for several miles watching for similar warning, which fortunately did not reoccur.
