Is There a Stalling Problem with the 2022 GMC Terrain?

There is zero doubt that there is a stalling problem with the 2022 GMC Terrain. Even the automaker, General Motors LLC, is transparent about the issue.

In a recall issued in January 2023, they state that the fuel pump of the 2022 Terrain may not provide sufficient fuel to the vehicle. If this happens, they warn that the engine may stall. And if the engine stalls, the Terrain may crash.

The GM recall affects 23,323 vehicles – both the 2022 GMC Terrain and 2021-2022 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles.

The issue is that “the fuel pump module may not consistently provide sufficient fuel to the engine, resulting in an engine stall.“ The remedy is for the fuel pump to be replaced, and dealers must do this free of charge.

But there are more problems. One problem is that some owners have had the fuel pump replaced and the failure recurs. Another is that owners who have been notified about the recall can’t have the repair done because the parts needed aren’t available.

Problems

According to the GMC recall notification, the vehicle’s fuel pump module might not be providing sufficient fuel to the engine. They say that this is what causes the SUV to stall.

All that owners are aware of is that their vehicles lose motive power and stall. Since there are owners who have had their faulty fuel pumps replaced without success, there are many questions that remain unanswered.

NHTSA Complaints

Complaints about the stalling issue are relatively recent, the first having been filed with the NHTSA in February 2023, more than a month after the recall was issued. The owner states in the complaint that the vehicle simply stalled. At the time, the check engine warning light was illuminated. The driver stated that she was able to restart the vehicle, but couldn’t keep the engine running. The dealership diagnosed that the fuel pump module needed to be replaced, and the Terrain was repaired. When the failure recurred, the SUV was taken back to the dealer. But this time, “the failure could not be determined.” Nevertheless, the owner was informed of the NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V013000 (Fuel System, Gasoline), the recall that states that stalling is caused by insufficient fuel.

Another more recent complaint reports experiencing the failure after receiving the recall notification. While driving at various speeds, “the vehicle lost motive power and stalled.” While able to pull over to the side of the roadway, the check engine warning light was illuminated. The complaint also states that the owner attempted to have the recall repair done but the part needed was not available.

A particularly short complaint states that after being told by the dealership to take the Terrain in, “they told me there is nothing they can do to fix it.” This, the complaint says, is dangerous, especially when there’s a recall.

Other complaints submitted in April 2023 report that owners hadn’t experienced any sort of failure even though they had received the recall notification. But the part needed to do the recall repair wasn’t available. They state that “the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair.”
