The 2020 Ford Edge is an SUV that’s meant to appeal to the budget-conscious driver, but still offer plenty of excitement. The automaker claims it is “a thrill-ride with the brains to match.” Yet, customers are extremely disappointed with the powertrain and visibility issues.

Problems with the Powertrain
Undoubtedly, the powertrain is one of the most important systems in any vehicle. It needs to shift smoothly and provide enough oomph to get moving.
One Edmunds review states otherwise with the Edge. “I’m full of regret from buying a Ford. Brand new 2020 edge has transmission issues that no one will acknowledge or admit to. Main issue is 0-35mph. It jerks and hesitates between gears. Especially around slow wide turns. It’s scary and very disappointing after paying so much for a car. It’s a bit noisy until it hits 40mph.”
It turns out that there is also a powertrain recall. NHTSA Campaign Number 20V550000 talks about certain vehicles that are missing bolts from the start/stop accumulator endcap. This defect can cause a transmission fluid leak, leading to a loss of function. If this leak occurs in the presence of ignition, it could also create a fire. In one sense, the automaker was completely correct – this vehicle is a thrill ride, wondering when and if it might burst into flames.

Visibility Problems
Aside from the mechanics of a vehicle, the structure and styling is also important. With the wrong setup, it can be difficult to drive, as seen with the Ford Edge.
One Edmunds user says, “Looking out the windshield first thing noticed are these rising fender tops on each side that obstruct vision and make you feel you are driving a submarine on wheels. The designers thought this must be a cool look. They should be shot.”
While it’s not related to the windshield design, there is a visibility-related recall worth mentioning. NHTSA Campaign Number 20V575000 states that more than 620,000 vehicles have a poor electrical connection that is causing the rearview camera to work sporadically or display a distorted image. Because of this malfunction, rearward visibility is reduced, thereby increasing the chances of an accident. Backing up without knowing what’s behind isn’t thrilling at all; it’s downright dangerous and shows the lack of brainpower that was put into creating the Ford Edge.
