Problems with the Engine

While any vehicle should have a strong engine under the hood, it’s even more important with a luxury model. Yet, the Genesis G80 engine fails miserably.

One NHTSA complaint states, “Went to the dealer to report a smell coming out of the engine as well as a squeaking noise when the accelerator is pressed either stationary or in motion. The dealer representative told me that there is a recall on the car but they don’t have a remedy yet. I read about the recall. On my question, what is going to happen if the engine catches fire? The representative told me that they haven’t seen any cars of this model to catch fire yet. I wonder what needs to happen so the manufacturer is more proactive addressing an already issued recall when a severe accident like engine fire could happen? Shouldn’t NHTSA force Hyundai in this instance to immediately repair the affected vehicles? Do we need injuries and death in order to take charge?”

The recall referenced above is labeled with NHTSA Campaign Number #19V538000. It turns out that the turbocharger oil supply pipe might have been created with a loose seal, which is allowing oil to leak onto the exhaust manifold. When this happens, there is an increased risk of a fire. When creating the G80, did Genesis believe that car fires were what owners wanted? According to the tagline, that must be the case.

Problems with the Windshield

Being able to see out of the windows is a must-have for on-road safety, but proper construction is more important than simple visibility. If the auto glass isn’t adhered properly, it could lead to a major safety concern.

Illustration of this is provided in an NHTSA report. “The contact owns a 2018 Genesis G80. When the windshield wipers were activated, the contact smelled wiper fluid inside the vehicle. The [dealer] stated that this was a normal condition. The manufacturer claimed that they had no knowledge of the condition. The failure mileage was 9,800. Consumer stated the dealer stated other consumers claimed same issue but the dealer reported to the consumer it was normal.”

It turns out that there is a very serious issue as demonstrated with NHTSA Campaign Number 18V305000. This recall states that the glass bonding of the front windshield and back window were not done correctly. Because of this defect, strength is reduced over time and auto glass might detach while driving. Again, looking at just the “whatever your wants” statement that Genesis boasts about, it’s hard to imagine anyone desires to have auto glass in their face while driving down the highway. What’s worse is that owners pay a premium price for this type of quality.

Problems with the Wheels

While discussing quality, it’s vital to look at one of the many complaints regarding the wheel materials. Apparently, they don’t hold up and are causing many on-road troubles.

Here is one statement on the NHTSA website. “Tires developed bubbles in side walls on two tires. Also car was difficult to control on interstate highways for the speed limit. Always fighting the steering wheel to stay in lane. I am 80 years old and there were many complaints of flats and loss of control that I decided to replace all the tires. I contacted Hyundai and also Continental and was given no satisfaction. Ongoing complaints about road noise on the old tires and the new tires have not been rectified. Mechanic said low profile tires are the cause of both. Car was in motion when the problems occurred.”

While there are no communications about tire issues from the automaker, it’s doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what is going on. It appears that Genesis believes customers want to drive a death trap, so the company created the 2018 G80. With that thought process in mind, it’s clear that the only things that owners have to “sacrifice” is their lives.
