2021 Genesis GV80 Problems and Top Complaints – Is Your Car A Lemon?

Engine & wheel issues are among the top complaints from vehicle owners

Updated on Author: Brian Jones

Launched in 2021, the Genesis GV80 is the first-ever sport-utility vehicle (SUV) produced by the Korean luxury vehicle division of Hyundai. Heralded by Genesis as its “first luxury flagship,” it aims to represent the brand’s innovative spirit.

According to William Lee, the global head of the brand, the V in its name represents “versatility that only a Genesis SUV can offer.”

So, you may assume that it is technologically superior to the Genesis G80 models, which have attracted many consumer complaints. We highlighted some of these in our article, 2021 Genesis G80 Problems and Top Complaints. They include faulty wheels and a defective engine.

The Tiger Woods 2021 Genesis GV80 Crash

In February 2021, Tiger Woods promoted the new GV80 during the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational. Then he crashed it early one morning in a single-car accident that left him with multiple leg injuries.

Paradoxically, the crash catapulted the little-known SUV into the spotlight.

Fox Business highlighted top features after the crash. For instance, it has a sophisticated forward-collision system, 10 airbags, evasive steering technology, and a camera inside the SUV that is designed to alert drivers if they are falling asleep.

The car was badly damaged and Woods was extricated from the wreckage of the car by paramedics and firefighters.

While the police report doesn’t place any blame on the vehicle, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the GV80 has a rollover risk of 16.90%. This rating is part of the NHTSA’s 5-star safety ratings that help consumers compare vehicle safety when they are looking to buy a new car.

While it has a five-star rating for a side crash, its rollover and frontal crash ratings are only 4 out of 5.

Additionally, complaints to the NHTSA include forward-collision avoidance, steering, and suspension issues that indicate instability at times. Let’s look at some of these complaints more closely.

Most Common Problems

There are 8 complaints on file with NHTSA about the GV80 that highlight a total of at least 10 problems. In addition to the 3 categories mentioned above that are listed once in the complaints, there is 1 complaint about the fuel/propulsion system, 2 about the SUV’s wheels, and 4 that relate to the engine.

Engine Problems

All the complaints about the GV80 engine relate to the check engine warning light. From these complaints, it is obviously a problem that recurs. All complainants were still waiting for a solution to the problem.

One of the complaints states that because the mechanic couldn’t duplicate the failure, the technician disengaged the check engine warning light sensor. However, “the failure recurred three times.” The failure mileage was only about 300.

Another states that after two trips to the service department, the part was still on backorder. The car had less than 1,000 miles on the clock and was purchased less than 30 days before the failure happened. Because of this, the owner says the Genesis service department has had the vehicle for longer than he has owned the car. No progress is indicated in the complaint.

The other two complaints both note that the dealers don’t return calls.

Problems with the Wheels

The two wheel-related complaints both state that problems result in the vehicle becoming unstable. Both reported balancing issues that recur.

One complaint says the problem happens when the SUV drives over bumps and causes rattling. The other says, “While adding air I noticed the pressure would not go over 33PSI and I could hear air escaping (from) the tire. There was a bulge at the bead of the tire. The tire was coming off the rim.”

Forward-Collision Avoidance Problems

There is one complaint about forward-collision avoidance, and it relates to a warning software problem. “These vehicles are sold with this option but not showing on settings, therefore it is not usable.”

The complaint says there are similar issues with G80 and G90 2021 models.
