2024-2026 Mazda CX-5 Windshield Cracking Problem
Class Action Investigation

Lemberg Law is launching a class action investigation into a windshield cracking defect affecting 2024–2026 Mazda CX-5 vehicles. Owners report sudden and severe windshield fractures occurring without any significant road hazard or impact, creating a direct obstruction to the driver’s forward vision.
I’m Sergei Lemberg, a consumer protection attorney who has spent more than two decades representing vehicle owners in lemon law and defect cases. Spontaneous windshield cracking has become an increasingly common defect across multiple vehicle makes and model years. Our firm has handled matters like this before, including Rains et al. v. Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC, involving spontaneous windshield cracking in 2020-2022 Land Rover Defenders. When we started seeing similar complaints come in for the Mazda CX-5, we took notice.
So I pulled the complaints. I’ve included my research and source material below.
What’s the Problem with the Mazda CX-5 Windshield?
On 2024–2026 Mazda CX-5 vehicles, owners report windshield fractures occurring spontaneously or from minimal road contact. Owners report similar symptoms:
- Sudden and severe windshield cracking with no significant road hazard
- Crack originates as a stress fracture rather than an impact point
- Crack obstructs the driver’s forward field of vision
- Potential compromise of i-Activsense forward-facing safety cameras
- Replacement windshields on national backorder with no confirmed availability date
- Mazda and dealers providing inconsistent explanations for the cause of failure
Which Vehicles Are Involved?
Based on owner complaints reviewed to date, this investigation currently covers the following model years:
- 2024 Mazda CX-5
- 2025 Mazda CX-5
- 2026 Mazda CX-5
What Are Owners Experiencing?
Here are a few complaints I found in my research that highlight this issue:
“The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, he observed a crack from the middle of the windshield to the bottom corner of the driver’s side windshield. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but was unable to assist with the repair.”
“The windshield of my 2026 Mazda CX-5 suddenly fractured and developed a severe crack without any external road hazard or heavy stone impact. Under micro-photography, the root of the crack presents as a smooth, continuous stress fracture (white line) with no physical crater or concentric shattering pattern. The authorized Mazda dealer and Safelite AutoGlass provided entirely contradictory diagnostic locations regarding the alleged impact point, proving the source of the failure is highly ambiguous. On this vehicle, a standard, everyday micro-pit from normal road dust triggered a catastrophic structural fracture across the glass. This is a disproportionate failure indicating excessive internal manufacturing residual stress or structural pressure from the vehicle frame rather than owner wear-and-tear. Furthermore, this severe fracture directly obstructs the driver’s forward vision and threatens the calibration and safety functionality of the i-Activsense forward-facing safety cameras mounted behind the rearview mirror, creating a sudden, severe driving safety hazard.”
“This vehicle was purchased two months ago. In that time the windshield has sustained multiple significant chips on multiple occasions during routine highway commuting. Some of these are in the line of sight of the driver, causing distractions or visibility issues. Prior to purchasing this vehicle I owned a 2012 Toyota Corolla, which traveled the same route every day and did not receive any significant windshield chips over a period of years. It seems that the windshield of the Mazda is particularly fragile and/or brittle compared to other windshields and suffers chips and cracks too easily.”
“Have a cracked windshield from a chip near the wiper area Mazda says needs to be replaced But they are on National back order. [I] was told that when the windshield comes in or collapses then an emergency order can be put in.”
Is There a Recall, TSB, or Federal Investigation?
At this time, there is no formal safety recall, technical service bulletin, or federal investigation covering the windshield cracking defect in the Mazda CX-5.
Mazda has not issued a public technical service bulletin or recall addressing this issue. We are actively gathering complaints and will continue to monitor developments. If NHTSA receives a sufficient volume of complaints, a formal federal investigation may follow.
What Can You Do?
If you own a Mazda CX-5 and have experienced a sudden or unexplained windshield crack, here are the steps to take:
- Document the crack with photos as soon as it appears, including close-up shots of the origin point.
- Save all repair orders, service invoices, and any communications with Mazda or your dealer.
- File a complaint using NHTSA’s online safety complaint form. The volume of complaints filed can support a formal federal investigation.
- Note whether your vehicle’s safety camera system has been affected or requires recalibration after the crack.
We Want to Hear from You
This investigation is ongoing and we are actively looking for additional CX-5 owners who have experienced windshield cracking. If you own a 2024, 2025, or 2026 Mazda CX-5 and have had a windshield crack without a clear road hazard cause, we want to hear from you. We will evaluate whether you have a lemon law claim or may be part of our class action investigation. There is no cost and no obligation.
Our firm works on a contingency-fee basis. You do not pay legal fees unless a recovery is obtained.
Your experience may help us build a clearer picture of this issue and support ongoing consumer investigations.
