Launched as a 2020 model, the 2024 Kia Telluride is, according to the automaker, an award-winning success story. Various organizations have named it the best car for families, the top safety pick, the best car for the money, and the best buy for 2024. Accolades are great, but for owners whose windshields have cracked within days of purchase, whose sunroofs have exploded, or whose instrument clusters suddenly turn black and are useless, accolades mean nothing. When Telluride’s forward collision avoidance system malfunctions and their new SUV suddenly brakes for no reason, owners are concerned about their safety on the road.

Most Common Problems
The most common complaints about the 2024 Kia Telluride reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involve the electrical system, visibility, and forward collision avoidance. Owners frequently report that instrument clusters go black, fuel gauges stop registering, windshields crack spontaneously, sunroofs shatter, and forward collision avoidance systems engage unexpectedly.
Other components and systems named in complaints include airbags, backover prevention, brakes, engine and cooling systems, exterior lighting, fuel/propulsion, lane departure, powertrain, seats and seat belts, structure, suspension, vehicle speed control, and wheels.
2024 Kia Telluride Recalls
Three major recalls affect the 2024 Kia Telluride:
Fire Risk Recall (April 2024): Involving 462,869 2020–2024 Tellurides. Overheating power seat motors caused by a stuck seat slide knob can lead to fire while driving or parked. Owners are advised to park outside until repairs are complete.
Rollaway Risk Recall: Affects 427,407 2020–2024 Tellurides. Incomplete engagement of the intermediate shaft and front driveshaft may result in rollaway when parked.
Engine Valve Spring Recall: Impacts 2,872 vehicles. Broken valve springs can lead to drive power loss, engine block damage, and potential fire.

Electrical System Problems
Approximately 82% of electrical complaints involve instrument cluster and fuel gauge issues. In many cases, the digital dashboard goes completely dark.
A California owner reported a blackout affecting the odometer, speedometer, gas gauge, blind spot alerts, and shift light, all on a 5-month-old Telluride.
A Virginia driver’s cluster screen went blank upon starting the vehicle.
An Ohio owner stated: “It’s dangerous—I had no idea how fast I was going or how much gas was in the car.
A Minnesota owner received repeated “battery discharging” messages despite no external devices being plugged in. Eventually, the dashboard went blank as well:
“Two out of two family vehicles with the same issue. It’s scary and frustrating.”
Forward Collision Avoidance Problems
Owners report false braking and failure to brake when necessary:
A Massachusetts driver described violent, unprompted braking while reversing even with no obstacles. In one case, the SUV stopped abruptly while backing into a driveway, leaving the front end exposed to traffic.
“The system engages for no reason and can’t be disabled permanently. Kia and the dealer say this is normal. It’s dangerous.”
A New Hampshire owner said the system failed to respond when approaching other vehicles and activated falsely due to road shadows.
A Colorado owner was told the dealer couldn’t replicate the issue and offered no solution.
Visibility Problems
By April 2025, nearly 25% of complaints involved cracked windshields or shattered sunroofs.
Cracked Windshields
Dozens of owners report windshields cracking with no or minimal impact. Cracks often spread rapidly:
An Arizona driver said their windshield split across the driver’s side after just one car payment.
A Texas owner saw a crack stretch across half the windshield within an hour of hearing a pop.
Exploding Sunroofs
Exploding sunroofs, while less common, are serious:
An Oklahoma owner described a sunroof imploding at 65 mph: “It felt like an explosion next to my face.”
A Missouri owner was told to blame weather and wind. Kia denied warranty coverage.
A Wisconsin owner said the dealer claimed there were no recalls even though many others had the same issue.
