2017 Ford Fusion Energi Hybrid Top Complaints and Problems – Is Your Car A Lemon?

Electrical, steering, engine and powertrain issues among the top complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners

Numerous car publications raved about the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi when it first arrived. They believed it outperformed much of the competition and Ford hails it as the “Cure for the Common Car.” Still, we can’t agree with these previous assessments, especially after noticing all the recall issues this plug-in hybrid endured. Almost every major component on this Ford seems to have a problem – from the electrical system to the powertrain.

Electrical

The electrical system is the bones of everything in the vehicle. Without a working setup, you run into problems that aren’t always obvious. On the other hand, the electrical malfunctions can just be nuisances.

One writer on Edmunds describes the trouble with the navigation system. “I waited to buy the 2017 to get the new technology. It is horrendous. I paid $700 for a navigation system that has missing exits on major interstate highways. Highway 5 that goes from Canada from Mexico. I contacted Ford and they refused to do ANYTHING! Waze and Android Auto which are FREE both outperform this lousy navigation. It can’t recognize your voice, losses your downloads, contacts etc. can’t find over 50%of the things asked of it. I can’t get it uninstalled. Do not buy this no matter how cheap. I am constantly frustrated by it interfering with Android Auto.”

Problems like this create frustration and make driving unenjoyable. Along with this, it seems the American automaker had lots of little electrical bugs to work out. Case in point is Manufacturer Service Bulletin #SSM 48053 which describes faulty SYNC 3 infotainment systems. Without the fix, drivers experience trouble with Travel Link, Applink, Slow System Response, Phone Pairing, Voice Recognition and Navigation. Thankfully, this issue is just a software update, but there are 60 total electrical service bulletins, so once that’s fixed, it’s on to the next thing.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid Electrical Problems:

I HAD DRIVEN THE CAR THE PREVIOUS DAY AND PARKED IT IN MY DRIVEWAY AND THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY DEAD THE NEXT MORNING. I HAD REPLACED THE BATTERY ONLY 4 MONTHS PRIOR. IT WAS A NEW BATTERY. I TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP IN UPLAND AND THEY TESTED STARTING AND CHARGING SYSTEM CIRCUITS-CHARGE-TEST NOTHING CAME UP. I HAD CHARGED THE BATTERY EARLIER THAT DAY TO GET THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE CAR HAD COMPLETELY DISCHARGED THE BATTERY AND BOTH TIMES THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BATTERY.

CAR WAS SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY AND THE BACK LITHIUM ION BATTERY IN TRUNK HAD A SHORT AND STARTED ON FIRE WHILE CAR WAS OFF AND NOT PLUGGED IN. BURNT THROUGH TRUNK AND INTO BACK SEAT AND BOTH SPEAKERS ARE GONE. CAR HAS HEAVY SMOKE DAMAGE AND ALL WINDOWS ARE BAD. FOUND BATTERY HARNESS WITH COMPLETELY MELTED WHERE IT PLUGS INTO BATTERY.

THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE WINDOWS WILL NOT CLOSE FULLY ON OCCASION. IF YOU TRY ROLLING THE WINDOW UP IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY ROLL BACK DOWN TO ABOUT HALFWAY TO 2/3 OPEN. I TRIED TO GET THIS ISSUE CORRECTED AT HE DEALERSHIP ONCE. THE MECHANICS REFUSED TO LOG THE ISSUE AND “RECALIBRATED” THE WINDOW IN A FEW SECONDS. THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN MY OPINION BECAUSE PASSENGERS AND DRIVERS CANNOT CLOSE THE WINDOW IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING SINCE LAST YEAR.

Powertrain

When you want to drive your car, you expect it to go. When you desire to Park it, you assume it’s not going to roll away. These functions all exist when the transmission works properly. When it doesn’t, a myriad of things occurs, all of which lead to danger.

One driver wrote about a complaint on the NHTSA website. It stated, “On July 22, 2019, I attempted to back out of a parking space, but the car would not go in reverse, it kept turning back to Park. The message on the dash said Shift System Fault. Call Geico to have it towed, took two hours for the tow truck driver to get car on the truck because it would not shift. He called Ford dealership service dept to see if any of them could tell him what to do. He talked to eight techs and not one knew the answer. Anyways, they told me the problem was with the shift knob and transmission and it would cost $545 to repair and it is not under warranty. And even though the 2013-2016 Ford Fusions had a recall for the same problem, they can’t do anything about my 2017, which is not right.”

We agree that this must have been a real pain for the driver. What’s worse is all the people that had to deal with the recall assigned with NHTSA Campaign Number 17V427000. It appears that vehicles with the 2.0L gas engines and six-speed automatic transmissions might have weld studs that fail. If this happens, the torque converter loses its connection to the engine flexplate and the vehicle won’t move. Of course, it does provide a good excuse to take a day off of work – “my car wouldn’t move.”

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid Transmission Problems:

I FIRST NOTICED WHEN I WAS IN REVERSE THE CAR STALLED THEN A WRENCH TOOL APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK THEN PROCEEDED TO SHIFT TO DRIVE AND DROVE OFF. THAT OCCURRED SPORADICALLY UNTIL 12/14/2018 WHEN A SHIFTSYSFAULT APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD. I STARTED TO DRIVE OUT OF A PARKING LOT AFTER I PUT THE CAR IN REVERSE BUT THE GEAR SHIFTED TO PARK ON IT’S OWN AS I WAS DRIVING. BOTH ME N MY PASSENGER TRIED SHIFTING THE GEAR WITHOUT SUCCESS. I TRIED OVERRIDING THE GEAR ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL AND YOUTUBE VIDEO BUT IT WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK. CONTINUOUSLY SHIFTING TO PARK FROM NEUTRAL, REVERSE AND DRIVE ON IT’S OWN WHICH CAUSED ME TO PAY FOR A TOW TRUCK TO GET HOME. ONCE HOME I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL THEN DRIVE SO I COULD PARK IT BETTER HOWEVER A NEIGHBOR ATTEMPTED TO OVERRIDE THE COMPUTER BY UNPLUGGING THE BATTERY THEN REATTACHING IT WHEN ANOTHER ALERT APPEARED SAYING ENGINE COOLANT WAS AT A HIGH TEMPERATURE AFTER THE CAR HAD BEEN OFF FOR 2HRS. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY AND I’M WAITING FOR A RESPONSE ON SERVICING.

I ATTEMPTED TO BACK OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT GO IN REVERSE, IT KEPT TURNING BACK TO PARK. THE MESSAGE ON THE DASH SAID SHIFT SYSTEM FAULT, CALL GEICO TO HAVE IT TOWED TOOK 2 HOURS FOR THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER TO GET CAR ON THE TRUCK BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT SHIFT, HE CALLED FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPT TO SEE IF ANY OF THEM COULD TELL HIM WHAT TO DO, HE TALKED TO (EIGHT) TECHS AND NOT ONE KNEW THE ANSWER, ANYWAYS, THEY TOLD ME THE PROBLEMS WAS WITH THE SHIFT KNOB AND TRANSMISSION AND IT WOULD COST $545 TO REPAIR AND IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. AND EVEN THOUGH THE 2013-2016 FORD FUSIONS HAS A RECALL FOR THE SAME PROBLEM, THEY CAN’T DO ANYTHING ABOUT MY 2017. WHICH IS NOT RIGHT.

Steering

Do you remember those old cartoons where characters would drive down the road and the steering wheel would fall off? We got a lot of laughs about that growing up, but the reality of it isn’t that funny.

One user on the NHTSA website wrote, “My steering wheel has become very loose and feels like it’s going to fall off.”

In the recall assigned NHTSA Campaign Number 18V167000, we hear about over a million vehicles that faced a major steering defect. It turns out that the steering wheel retaining bolt might loosen and allow the wheel to come detached while driving. We don’t think anyone found this funny when it happened to them

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid Steering Problems:

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 FORD FUSION. WHILE DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, A BEEPING NOISE WAS HEARD AND THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND DROVE INTO A CREEK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS AN UNKNOWN ERROR MESSAGE ON THE NAVIGATION SCREEN. THERE WERE NO INJURIES SUSTAINED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A SALVAGE YARD AND DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS

THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME LOOSE AND HAD AN EXTREME AMOUNT OF PLAY IN IT. I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND REPAIRED. THEY TOOK CARE OF IT WITH NO PROBLEM. AFTER RETURNING HOME MY WIFE SUGGESTED I CHECK AND SEE IF THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND I FOUND THE ARTICLE ABOUT THE 2014 TO 2016 INVESTIGATION. WE THOUGHT IT SHOULD BE MADE KNOWN THAT IT ALSO IS HAPPENING IN 2017 MODELS. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THIS WAS THE SECOND ONE HE HAS SEEN ALTHOUGH HE WAS NOT SPECIFIC IF THEY WERE BOTH 2017 MODELS.

Engine

Finally, let’s look at the motor on this Fusion model. It’s supposed to be efficient and sporty, but it seems to have its own list of problems.

One driver wrote this on the NHTSA website, “Car is a 2017 Ford Fusion Sport 2.7L EcoBoost. Car stalled randomly. Drove for about 20 minutes prior to stalling. Was stopped at a busy intersection on a city street about to make a left hand turn. The car stalled and went into full accessory mode. Started the car back up afterwards with no problems. Car has 8500 miles on it. A car stalling while in Drive is unsafe in the case of being on train tracks, stalling could be fatal. Cannot be replicated and no codes thrown. With no codes, dealer has no idea what the issue could be.

This isn’t the only engine trouble occurring on this Fusion model. In fact, the NHTSA records more than 20 manufacturer bulletins discussing motor issues. One talks about a lack of power, drivability issues and an illuminated MIL due to a faulty PCM. What’s the moral of this story? With a 2017 Ford Fusion Energi, you don’t get a “common car.” Instead, you might stall on train tracks, lose your steering wheel or end up going insane trying to work out the in-cabin electronics.

Here are some actual complaints logged with the NHTSA about the 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid Engine Problems:

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 FORD FUSION. WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE, THE CHECK ENGINE INDICATOR REMAINED ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE VIBRATED AND SHUTTERED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DISCOVERED COOLANT INSIDE CYLINDER NUMBER ONE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO PEORIA FORD WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ENGINE WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000.

UPON DECELERATING, MY CAR STALLED IN TRAFFIC. I WAS DRIVING ON A SUBURBAN CITY STREET AT APPROX. 35 MPH, AND DECELERATED TO A COMPLETE STOP. UPON PRESSING THE GAS TO START GOING AGAIN, I NOTICED THE ENGINE HAD SHUT OFF. THIS IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE, AS A CAR THAT LOSES POWER WHILE DRIVING COULD CAUSE A CRASH. I HAVE TAKEN MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR INSPECTION.
