All-wheel drive fun can be found in the 2022 Subaru Outback. The manufacturer states it provides
“adventure, elevated.” However, current owners are finding more adventure than they bargained for with the defective electrical system, malfunctioning powertrain, failing steering and dangerous visibility.

Most Common Problems with the 2022 Subaru Outback

By far the most common problem owners of the 2022 Subaru Outback are experiencing are windshields warping and cracking, often without any impact at all. Of a total of 190 complaints, 155 relate to this issue. And many of these Outback owners report that it is a recurring problem. After replacing the windshield, it happens again, sometimes multiple times.

While most windshield problems are filed under Visibility/Wiper, some are listed in the Visibility category as well as under Unknown or Other, Structure, and 1 under Forward Collision Avoidance.

Other categories with quite high complaint numbers are the Electrical System (14), Forward Collision Avoidance (7), and Lane Departure (6). Other components and systems that have attracted complaints are structure, airbags, exterior lighting, the fuel/propulsion system, powertrain, seat belts, brakes, steering, and the engine.

Although not a common complaint, one describes how a woman from Texas was injured after the airbags were deployed in an accident. “She suffered substantial injuries to her upper body including fractures of the clavicle, breastbone, numerous ribs, and her T12. Doctors said it was almost miraculous she survived. There is significant data available on the impact of airbags. The forces expended and the bodily damages that can occur. It must be known that a body so close to the activation of the airbag could have fatal consequences, but so little has been made public about this danger.”

Major Problems with Windshield Cracking

The first complaint about defective windscreens was from an owner in Texas. “A little penny-sized chip on the front windshield has turned into a severe crack from the middle of the windshield to (the) passenger side as well as the driver side.”

Another owner from Texas states: “Windshield cracked without any cars near me, only dragonflies and butterflies.”

An owner from Florida states: “The windshield cracked without an object striking it while driving. It cracked from the center lower edge of the windshield. This issue was part of a class action suit in 2019.”

“My windshield cracked without a direct impact to the windshield,” says an owner from Utah. “I replaced the windshield with an OEM windshield. Approximately one week after installation, the windshield cracked again.”

Similarly, an owner from Utah states: “Brand new 2022 Outback XT driven 500 miles. Got hit by the tiniest rock that left a barely visible chip on the lower right passenger side. By the next morning, it had cracked and spread across half of the windshield. One week later, the same thing happens, but on the driver’s side, and now the cracks have connected, forming one massive crack.”

A Washington owner states: “My windshield has cracked for the second time. I didn’t hear anything and there is no mark of impact, just about a 5-inch crack. It’s coming up from the bottom middle of the windshield. I’m not sure what’s causing this. But this will be the second time I have to replace the windshield on my brand new car.”

Third time unlucky in Arizona: “Vehicle has 10,800 miles and this is the third broken windshield. The smallest road debris results in failure of the Carlex factory-equipped windshield. I have never replaced a windshield in 35 years of driving.”

Windshields Cracking While Parked

“Windshield cracked at 4,900 miles, parked at work.” As a result, the owner, from California, contacted Subaru of America and a local Subaru dealer.  “They both sent me to one another, but neither has helped fix this reoccurring issue with 2022 Subaru Outbacks.”

“The windshield had a 12-inch crack starting at the driver’s side midway up in an L shape. There was no visible rock damage and the vehicle was sitting in my garage when it cracked,” says an owner from South Carolina.

This incident took place in Illinois, early in the morning, before sunrise, with an outside temperature of 20 degrees F showing on the car’s thermometer. “Front windshield had a spontaneous crack form from some point out of sight under the bottom seal, just right of the center of the windshield. The windshield had no chips, and the car is four months old.”

Warped Windshield

An owner from Ohio describes the dangers of a warped windshield. “The windshield is warped on the passenger side, approximately 6 – 8 inches from the right seal, bottom corner. This creates a blurred distortion from traffic merging to the right and causes a hazard in (the) spatial relationship to the vehicle. Pictures show distortions through the windshield that do not exist. This has nearly caused me to be in accidents.”

The complaints go on and on, and these relate only to the 2022 Subaru Outback. Consumers have reported issues with faulty windshields since the 2017 Outback model.

Electrical System Problems

A well-functioning electrical system is a key to creating a great family ride. However, this sophisticated system is causing more trouble than it is worth. The most common electrical system complaints are about batteries dying. There are also complaints about the factory GPS going blank, and the ‘infotainment system being dangerously underpowered.

The first complaint about the electrical system comes from a New Jersey owner, and it’s a horrifying one. Driving through heavy traffic, the Outback lost power, and several error/warning messages displayed. The driver pulled to the right shoulder of the road and smelled burning. He got out of the SUV, walked about 100 feet, and called 911. “By (the) time a dispatcher answered, the engine compartment of the vehicle was completely engulfed in flames. No modifications of any kind were done to the vehicle since its purchase.”

There is no indication of how the fire started, only that it was electrical.

Battery Drain Problems

Other electrical system problems include parasitic battery drain. With only a little more than 200 miles on the clock, an Outback in New York had to be towed twice and the battery replaced. Additionally, the vehicle was “DOA 3 times in (the) driveway” in just a week.

An owner from Colorado also experienced a dead battery. This was when the car was practically brand new and had been parked at temperatures of about 5 degrees F for less than 48 hours. The dealer claimed the owner had left the LED dome light on, which drained the battery.“ Maintaining that a single dome light should take 450 hours to drain a fully-charged battery, he says: “It seems like even brand new Subaru Outback 2022s are affected by major parasitic drain battery issues.”

Battery Disables EyeSight Safety Features

Another story about a defective battery is interesting because they blame the battery for disabling EyeSight. We discuss EyeSight issues in the next section because most problems are filed under Forward Collision Avoidance. This complaint is under the Electrical System category.

The first time the battery drained the Outback had only 831 miles on the clock. It was diagnosed as defective and replaced by (the) manufacturer.” It happened a second time at  4,620 miles after sitting unused for 8 days in airport parking. The battery drained and most ‘check engine’ lights came on after jump-starting. EyeSight and most safety features were disabled until they were checked and reset by the manufacturer.

Subaru claimed this was because the vehicle sat for more than a week. They charged and tested the battery and found no problems. “However a periodic dead battery to seniors who do not drive daily but desperately need a reliable car in case of sudden emergencies is cause for a safety concern.”

It seems that Subaru hasn’t learned much over the years. It wasn’t that long ago that several model-year Outback models were involved in proposed class action lawsuits because electrical system defects were leading to battery failure. There’s nothing quite as adventurous as heading out to the car in the morning only to be met with a dead battery

Forward Collision Avoidance & Lane Departure Problems

Forward collision avoidance problems include the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system triggering spontaneously. There are also complaints that obstacle detection goes off randomly when there is nothing in front of vehicles. Another complaint is that lane assist pulls cars out of the lane they are traveling in. There are also complaints relating to EyeSight safety features.

EyeSight Problems

Subaru explains that EyeSight monitors the position of the SUV on the road “and will alert you if you stray out of your lane. Pre-Collision Braking helps you avoid or reduce frontal impacts by alerting you and applying full braking force in emergency situations. EyeSight detects objects in front of the vehicle that you are likely to hit.”

That’s great when it works. An owner from Colorado complains that “No matter what Subaru does, the infotainment system which controls the safety systems crashes randomly and weekly, disabling all the EyeSight safety features.”

An owner from Washington blames the windshield! “SafeLite is Unable to calibrate vehicle EyeSight after non-OEM windshield replacement.”

“There have been two attempts to calibrate the vehicle EyeSight by SafeLite. The dealer says the EyeSight with a non-OEM windshield can not be properly calibrated. According to Subaru, the 2022 model requires that OEM glass be used for windshield replacements on models that are equipped with the EyeSight Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS).”

A 2022 Outback owner from Ohio doesn’t mention EyeSight, but states: “Randomly throughout a cruise control drive, the car will pull towards an inner lane. I fight with the car to keep it in the correct lane. If I relax my grip even slightly, the car pulls me into the other lanes of traffic. I am finding that it is most determined to pull me out of my lane when there are cars in the lane next to the one I’m driving. In other words, it never tries to pull me off the road. It always tries to pull me into other lanes of traffic.”

Description
The windshield cracked during a severe weather incident where outside temperature was -24 degrees. There were no stone chips or any other issues with the windshield. I drove the car for approximately 20 minutes with the defroster on, when I got home I pulled the car into the garage, when I got back into the vehicle the windshield was cracked from the bottom left of the driver's side across the windshield toward the middle. I took the vehicle to safelite first, they said the sandwich piece of glass between the exterior section and interior section of the windshield had suffered a failure to to extreme temperature differential. They had seen a number of similar failures since from the prior weekend. They said it is a manufacture issue and said to take it to the dealer for a warranty issue. I took it the the subaru dealer where I purchased the vehicle, they inspected the windshield and took a number of photographs to submit to subaru. I was told their windshield experts would examine the photos and get back to them with an answer, that will be four weeks ago tomorrow, friday the 27th. Meanwhile I'm driving a vehicle with a broken windshield which is not safe. I called subaru customer care and they are trying to contact the dealership about the claim submission but haven't been successful. I can certainly pay to replace the windshield, however, if it is a manufactured error I believe subaru should honor the claim and replace it. I searched the subaru outback owners portal and found numerous similar incidents where owners claimed the windshield failed under similar circumstances. According to safelite, subaru windshields are softer than most manufacturers in an effort to save weight and expense.

The windshield cracked on its own overnight (temperatures in the low 30s). The crack starts at the bottom of the window at the center and goes upward and towards the passenger side. The crack is roughly 14" long, but has extended another 2" since the initial crack started. It impairs the view for most drivers. The dealer confirmed that there was no impact mark and have submitted photos to subaru of america. Subaru has come back with stating it was caused by 'external influence' even though there is no evidence of that. The dealer is doing their best to appeal this with subaru.

We are on our 3rd windshield for a 2022 subaru outback that currently has 7300 miles on it. The first windshield cracked on it's own, completely unprovoked by anything. The second was actually a very small rock that hit us on the road and caused a small crack that just kept running until our field of vision was obstructed. The 3rd was a defect in the glass that caused a stress fracture, so it's possible that's what happened with the 1st one. All 3 incidents happend within a 5 week window. When I go online, there are cases and cases where these subaru's have cracked windshields and it is dangerous to have a massive run in the windshield when you are driving down the road. There are 100's of these complaints, it's just that no one is reporting them. Please look into this, it's not safe to have glass that cracks that easily.

Faulty windshield that cracked overnight possibly due to weather. The subaru mckenna dealer service manager says it is due to impact yet there is no clear indicator of an impact on the windshield, I took photos of the crack before they inspected it. Even some subaru employees were telling me it's not a crack made from impact and that they admitted subaru makes faulty windshields. Yes, my vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I am looking to have it seen by my insurance to see if they agree with the subaru dealer's assessment of the damage. The safety issue is the possibility of the windshield spiderwebbing and decreasing all visibility of the road at any moment. No indicator of any windshield failures except the dealer recommending a separate windshield warranty which I wish they pushed more on it and were honest about the tendency of subaru windshields to be faulty so I could have gotten that warranty. Or I wish too that I found out about subaru's class action lawsuit regarding the outback models 2017-2020 regarding their windshields and how they have to pay text="Who are we? On multiple occasions my car has braked on its own when there was no reason to. It has happened on at least four (4) different times and has been taken to subaru of kennesaw to be looked at. Unfortunately the dealership has been unable to duplicate the problem. When I took my car back to the dealership on september 28, 2022 for this I contacted subaru of america and they had an engineer, [xxx] come and get the data off the event data recorder in the vehicle. The engineer verbally said they have pictures from each time my car braked on its own and advised there was nothing in front of me. He said it is an eyesight issue but they cannot adjust the eyesight and they cannot fix the problem. The car just brakes without warning the engineer said this can happen if the eyesight sees a mailbox, cars to the right or left of me, trees, curbs and even a change in color in the roadway. This has continued to happen and now subaru of america will not take my calls nor will they respond to my emails. I have asked for a copy of the pictures, a letter stating their findings and a letter stating my car is safe to drive but they will not issue this to me. This has been going on since april 2022. I am afraid I am going to be in accident one day when the car brakes on its own if someone is behind me and not paying attention. The transmission in this new vehicle began making a high-pitch whining noise shortly after I bought it. After 3500 miles, I took it to the subaru dealer where I purchased the car. After 10 days of troubleshooting, they determined it requires a transmission replacement. There are multiple other owners that have experienced the same issue (some who have been told by their dealers that it is ‘just a noise'), info available via subaru forum. While I did not experience a transmission failure while driving — if I had, this could be a serious safety issue, and there appears to be no acknowledgement by subaru that their outback vehicle / transmissions may have a significant manufacturing defect. I am still in the process of determining what the repair / replacement plan is with the dealer and subaru of america.

The windshield on our 2022 subaru outback with less than 2000 miles was hit by a small object. The windshield chipped and then cracks began to expand. Small projectiles hit windshields all the time yet don't break like subaru windshields. Subaru will not cover this under warranty and the repair will cost us over 00 (front cameras need to be realigned). The reason we are reporting this is that our old 2015 subaru outback required the windshield to be replaced 4 times in less than 8 years. Obviously this is a defect that subaru knows about as they extended the warranty for windshields on previous year models, but only for certain defects that started at the top of the windshield. From our perspective this is an unsafe manufacturer defect that needs to be addressed.

The windshield cracked without any noticeable impact. I noticed a crack 12-15 inches when I got into the vehicle the next day. The day prior I had not noticed the crack, not noticed any impact sound, no incident happened. I'd not been driving on the highway and I maintained more than 3 car lengths of following distance. I was driving under 40mph the day prior to noticing the crack. The vehicle is just over a month old and has 3000 miles on the odometer when the incident happened. Dealership inspected and found a impact point which is invisible to the naked eye. Such small debris cracking the windshield suggests the windshield is too weak and is a possible safety hazard. Manufacturer and dealer are not able to replace it under warranty. They are offering a one time good will replacement, but if such small specks of debris(not noticeable to the naked eye) can crack the windshield it's very likely the windshield will st the minimum crack again or worse could lead to a safety hazard if the debris was a noticeable and more substantial. I've been finding a number of complaints of the exact same issue and similar response from the dealerships/customer service on online forums and youtube.

18" crack in the windshield was noted originating from passenger side pillar extending toward the middle of window. Crack occurred while car was parked in an insulated and locked garage. No crack when parked and large crack the following morning. No known trauma or known rocks striking the windshield. On close inspection there was no star pattern, bubble pattern or palpable concave defect that would suggest a previous rock chip.

The windshield cracked during normal operation of the car. This is the 4th windshield since purchasing the 2022 subaru obw. The first crack, with no visible impact to the windshield, occurred at 13k, the second, with no visible impact, occurred at 20k, and this third occurred at 41k. They have occurred in different areas of the windshield (from each side and the bottom). Each replacement has been oem and the 3rd windshield (which lasted the longest) had an additional ceramic coating. I reported the 3rd windshield to the nhtsa and when I reviewed nhtsa's assessment, it was incorrect. I emailed nhtsa requesting the assessment be corrected, but never received a reply and believe the report is still incorrect.

On or about april 28, 2022, while traveling on route 95 north (an interstate highway) utilizing the factory gps system which is in the center console, the entire console went blank. I immediately grew concerned the vehicle steering or acceleration was about to fail and pulled over on the shoulder of the interstate. I turned off the vehicle and restarted it, yet the screen remained blank, which meant I could not control the heat, defroster, air conditioning, gps, radio, the usb ports, the telephone connections, and etcetera; all were inoperable. As I continued to drive the screen remained blank or blacked out. I pulled into a rest area and waited 20 minutes with the vehicle turned off, and when I restarted the vehicle, it operated normally. On april 29, 2022, vehicle mileage 10,389, I took my 2022 outback to subaru, while at the dealership the dealership diagnosed the problem as follows: a new center console cockpit control unit assembly-navigation and display assembly was ordered. I was told the dealership would contact me when the part arrived. I did not hear from the dealership and on june 27, 2022, vehicle mileage 16,282, I returned to subaru for the third (3rd) time, and I informed them the problem with the center console continued. I was advised that additional testing was needed. According to the service records a miscellaneous check for the latest software was completed, issue was not resolved, the console failed to accept the updates and a new console was ordered. No warning lamps, codes or errors were noticed, the screen goes blank and the driver wonders what will occur next. In this model, 2022 outback xt limited, the screen is over 12 inches tall and is the predominant electrical system in the vehicle. The problem was replicated by the dealership on 5 service visits, it is available for inspection, although the concern occurs daily it is intermitent. After 6 visits the problem has not been repaired/rectified.

My first complaint was filed on 8/2/2022 @2,807 miles. Here we are again, not even 6 weeks later and it happened again. The dealer did replace my windshield. It took me driving there three different times to finally catch the manager so he could take pictures and file a claim with subaru. Subaru did accept the claim and replaced the windshield. I was without my car for three days while this repair was done. Driving home last night, my 19 year old so was in the passenger seat. He says look mom, the windshield is cracking. Sure enough, no impact was heard or seen, it just started cracking in the same spot as the first time. It was such a hassle to get the first repair done and now I have to do it again!!! Ugh... I now wish I had never bought this car.

While stopped in a line at a drive through the vehicles automatic shutoff (fuel savings feature) engaged. When the brake is released the car completely shut down, including all computer, dash and vehicle lights. The cars transmission was in drive and could not be placed in park in an attempt to restart the vehicle. After several minutes the car shifted to park and was able to be restarted after more than one attempt. I exited the very busy parking lot and proceeded to my place of work approximately a half mile away which is a safer location. Each time the brake was depressed the automatic shutoff would attempt to engage immediately, fearing a shutoff/failure in a major intersection I "feathered" the brake to keep engine running. Upon reaching my place of work parking lot and placing the vehicle in park I was able to disengage the feature. This vehicle has been plagued with issues, it currently has very low miles (less than 5000) and is one year old. It had a battery failure at 600 miles, and has had several issues since that time with the vehicle not starting. Fortunately these issues occurred out of traffic but the latest incident could prove hazardous if it occurred in traffic. When the vehicle diagnostics are run it shows "normal" and the problem remains unresolved. I have also noted hesitation with the shifting during acceleration from day one of owning the vehicle. It does not shift smoothly and will often hesitate which can pose a danger if attempting to avoid an accident. I have learned to compensate for the issue when pulling into traffic, especially if rapid acceleration is needed. Again, the vehicle diagnostics do not show an issue and the problem remains unresolved.

Within 2000 miles the windshield stressed fractured from the passenger side edge and then progressed inwards in multiple directions. There was no impact. The dealer (balise subaru-warwick ri) called me a liar about an impact and gave me nothing but lip service about subaru of america possibly performing a "good will" replacement. The crack is large enough to place a credit card into. Never before have I seen a crack that wide. Safety glass usually hairline cracks. A glass replacement company told me subaru is using unreasonable thin glass to lighten the cars to make the mpg numbers. But at the risk of safety to drivers?? I think windshields are pretty important to not mess around with. Minimum thickness should be a standard.

Subaru makes plenty of money from us to supply us with a quality windshield. And I see there is already a pending windshield lawsuit for earlier models.. This year and model should be included!! I just brought this new 2022 subaru outback one day before this happened. I made a right turn on a local road at a speed near 30 mph. Suddenly, I heard a big sound from the windshield. Then I found there was a hole in the windshield. There was one suv in front of my car when this happened, and its speed was similar with my car. I just brought this car and total mileage was around 50 miles. I can't image this happened at low speed. I think maybe one small stone caused this problem and I was lucky that it didn't hit me. We let our dealership to repair it and prevent it cracking. I hope I don't need to replace this windshield in the near future.

On august 19, 2022, approximately 11:30 a. M., after parking my 2022 subaru outback limited in a private driveway, the windshield began cracking from the bottom edge and has grown 25 inches toward the center of the windshield. There was no impact to the windshield. The weather was moderately cool--74 degrees, slight mist precipitation (wiper use minimal), and no wind. And, my previous drive (as with my history with this vehicle, 2,831 miles) was a gentle and uneventful four miles. I've spent fourty years entering and exiting the driveway and driving in that area, with other cars, and never once had a problem. I spent twenty years investigating traffic accidents and vehicle related problems in metro-atlanta (cobb county police 1992-2012), and never saw a problem like this. But, since buying the car (my first subaru), I've read countless internet posts of similar events, from folks who have purchased a subaru in the past five or so years. Subaru of america hasn't responded to my concern; and, my dealership (subaru of kennesaw (georgia)) is dodging the burden of replacement costs. Not only is subaru of america being irresponsible in the manufacturing and promotion of their cars, when they know there's a serious design flaw, but they show little interest in working to resolve a simple and important problem that affects everyone on roadways throughout the world.

I purchased this vehicle brand new in august 2021 (so 1 year ago exactly). There is an issue with their windshields and cracking immediately the second you even get the smallest rock impact. Just today I got another one cracked across my entire windshield within seconds and the impact point is smaller than 1cm. This is my fifth windshield crack and replacement in one year. I am in insurance and in 12 years of being in the industry and also driving multiple vehicles myself... I have never myself or my clients had this many cracked windshields within 1 year of a brand new vehicle. There was already a class action lawsuit on the windshields from 2014 to 2018 outback models... Clearly 2022 model is doing the same thing. Also, funny enough, in financing they offer glass coverage you can purchase which is something I have never seen financing offer and I didnt choose because I had glass insurance through my auto insurance but now I realize why they actually offer it because they are well aware that subaru has glass issues. Of course, they don't tell you that. This is not a location issue, or a where I am driving and what types of roads issue. This is a city car used to go to and from my office. I am not on dirt roads etc. This is not normal. 5 massive cracks from things that are less than 1cm is a car issue not a driver/user issue.

No component failed or malfunction. It is working as designed but it is a serious safety concern that can not be addressed except by purposely bypassing the safety system or systems. For whatever reason subaru added rear seat belt chime alarms to the rear seats. Three in total it appears. Driver, passenger, and center. The chimes will continue to grow louder until it blocks all radio and becomes a distraction. In theory this is not a bad idea. In practice it is a safety concern. Subaru markets their vehicles as being pet friendly. The issue is when I have my dog in the back seat the seat beat alarm continues to go of sporadically and she is not done growing yet. I don't use harness/restraints but even if I did there would be no way to keep her in the correct position to not make the adjacent seat chime. This is a major distraction while driving because I have to constantly take my eyes off the road and try to reposition her to stop the chime/alarm. It is also putting others at risk as I am not focused on driving. Problem confirmed by the dealer and subaru (soa) with no plan to fix except cut wires, buy seat belt buckles from ebay to stick in holder, or clip seatbelts when not in use. Concern is this will cause passengers to not buckle up due to the hassle. Safety can't be an inconvenience or there is less chance it will be followed. No police have been involved. Dealer and soa have confirmed it is a problem with no solution. Possible software update in the future. Not a failure but a design flaw.

Battery dies or runs so low the vehicle won't start, if a door/hatchback is left open just a short time with the engine turned off. Or if the key fob is in the cab more than a few minutes with the engine off, or the accessory function is used more than a few minutes with the engine off. I bought the car on july 21st 2022. On july 26st 2022 I was driving it on a jeep road and pulled over and stopped for 10-15 minutes, car/engine turned off. When I returned the car wouldn't start. I tried to start it repeatedly. It appeared to be a low battery. I may have left the door ajar but don't believe so. I did sit in the car a few minutes with the engine off. My phone was plugged in to the car and I used it for a few minutes. I possibly could have left the key fob in the car but don't think so. About 15 minutes later, after exiting the vehicle, I got back in and it started. I researched online and found this has been a problem with subaru outbacks. Lawsuits have been filed. I called the dealership and talked to the salesman and he said he had no idea why my car hadn't started. Which I find hard to believe. If this had happened a few miles further out in the desert and I was gone from the car longer and the battery completely failed it would have been a life threatening situation. It was a 100 degree day and phone reception was spotty. I'm 67 and had water but a 6 mile walk back to civilization wouldn't have been easy. I've read that many outback owners carry a jump-start device-battery. I'll get one, they're cheap. But still the dealerships and subaru should inform/warn customers of this issue before they buy or leave the premises. I wouldn't have bought the car if I knew. Subaru's are marketed as outdoor friendly and this model, the wilderness, supposedly designed just fit that. How many people are being stranded in dangerous situations? Leaving the hatchback open while camping as they unload the car engine off-dead battery. I've heardrumors online of a software fix

Windshield crack. With just under 3000 miles on our 2022 subaru outback while driving home, my wife noticed a small crack on the windshield near the "eye sight" cameras which I could not see from the driver side. By the time I could finally pull over and look at this it had grown to over a foot long or longer. Prior to owning this subaru, we helped our daughter with the purchase of her first subaru, a 2020 subaru crosstek hybrid. She has already had to have her windshield replaced due to a small chip which grew into a long unrepairable crack. Prior to owning a subaru, I owned a 2007 chevrolet impala for over 14 years. Just before selling it this past year I had to replace the windshield on this car. Not sure what the cause of the crack was but I suspect it was vandalism. I'm reporting this as I've heard others having this problem as well and was concerned that maybe there was a problem with subaru windshields.

When I talked to the dealership where the car was purchased the salesman seemed to have heard about the issue before. The windshield repair shop also said that there are a lot of subarus that come through the shop with the same issue. I've had rocks hit my windshields in past vehicles and I have never seen them crack and spiderweb in this way. We left the outback wilderness out overnight under no trees or anything that may cause damage like that. Come outside in the morning, and bam, a 13 inch crack in a semi s shape with no visible chip from a rock. There is absolutely no reason there should be a crack, even if there was a small chip in the glass. That's the cause of poor craftsmanship and this deserves a lawsuit alone. Has subaru of america learned nothing from what happened with the 2015 to 2016 outback and legacy models? What about their most recent lawsuit in 2019 that ranged for the 2017 to 2019 foresters that also awarded the victim of poor windshields? Do we need to have another lawsuit? If that's the case so be it but I seriously hope the nhtsa kicks off a recall so there is no need for a lawsuit. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There have been two attempts to calibrate the vehicle eyesight by safelite. The dealer says the eyesight with a non-oem windshield can not be properly calibrated. According to subaru, the 2022 model requires that oem glass be used for windshield replacements on models that are equipped with the eyesight advanced driver assistance system (adas). Lane detection works randomly, periodically there a warning beep showing a vehicle icon between two bars and the word "off" . In addition to the alarms, the vehicle dynamics control (vdc) keeps nudging the steering wheel causing the vehicle to swerve. None of the front safe driving features of the vehicle can be trusted. The steering nudging problem doesn't happen when the vdc is turned off. The vdc defaults to on. To safely drive the vehicle the vdc needs to be manually turned off each time the car is started. No the problem has not been confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. I assume the vehicle logs have a record of the warnings.

The glass sheet on the vehicle's sunroof spontaneously exploded while I was driving on the freeway. Some broken shards fell onto myself and into the cabin as the interior pull cover was in the open position at the time of the explosion. Luckily no additional passengers were in the vehicle at the time of the incident. I was in shock as I heard and felt the explosion. As broken shards were falling onto me and into the cabin, I thought I was a victim of an intentional freeway shooting or an unlucky recipient of a stray bullet. After realizing I was unharmed, I immediately drove my car to a trusted subaru dealership for further investigation of the damage. At the time, the dealership did not have the appropriate personal on site for an investigation, however a service associate took photos of the damage. The service associate also observed and noted the position of some glass remains still in tact on the sunroof frame - some broken edges were positioned at an outward angle in relation to the vehicle. This is an indication of an outward explosion rather than an impact from outside of the vehicle. I am currently waiting for the dealership's response to have the car brought back in to complete the investigation w/ the appropriate personal.

On 7/7/2022 I was traveling the blue ridge parkway and heard a pop sound and saw about 5 inch windshield crack from edge of my driver a-post frame traveling horizontally toward the center of the vehicle. I did not see anything hit the windshield. By the time I got to a rest stop the crack continued to travel across toward the center of the vehicle. I saw no evidence of impact at the edge of windshield or along crack. I had to lower my seat so as to see below the crack because the sun on the windshield was causing a bright glare spot from light refraction. When I got to lynchburg I called the closest subaru dealership. They stated they that something must have hit it and if they had to order a replacement it would be several days and suggested I call my insurance company and a. Auto glass repair company. I then called subaru customer service which provided me a claim number and stated they would get back to me in 24 to 48 hours. I stayed overnight in lynchburg but they haven't got back to me. I am waiting for someone to come inspect it or tell me where to take for inspection.

I have videos. I have been having major issues with a lot of aspects of the car. However, the most concerning is the obstacle detection going off randomly when there is nothing in front of the car, and the other major issue is that the lane assist feature keeps pulling the car out of the lane I am in. Randomly throughout a cruise control drive, the car will pull towards an inner lane. I fight with the car to keep it in the correct lane. If I relax my grip even slightly, the car pulls me into the other lanes of traffic. I am finding that it is most determined to pull me out of my lane when there are cars in the lane next to the one I'm driving. In other words, it never tries to pull me off the road. It always tries to pull me into other lanes of traffic. I've been driving the car for 6 months. It's been doing this since the first month.

While driving, the radio volume suddenly increases to extremely loud. Not only is this dangerous and extremely distracting for the driver, but it is potentially harmful to everyone in the vehicle. My immediate reaction when this occurs ( it happens frequently) is to focus on the radio and off of the road, regardless of whether I am driving low speed or high speed on an interstate, or even when I'm turning at an intersection. Very dangerous! There are no warnings prior to the “full blast” of volume.

Purchased a 2022 subaru outback in late august 2021. We been driving regularly and on friday july the 1st, we were leaving home going to dinner, got in the car to a crack in the windshield extending from the top center edge of the windshield to the center of the windshield. No impact chip is visible, or by touch. No known rock or debris impact while I was driving. We have been very careful with my nice new car and this is extremely disappointing. Due to the holiday, we were unable to contact the dealer until tuesday july the 5th. As of the day we contact the dealer the crack is now two thirds down the windshield on a vertical plane and beginning to spider horizontally from the center to the left and the right.

Windshield chips and cracks easily- I have had my car for less than 4k miles- I had one small chip near top of windshield, and within 2 weeks time it has spread almost all the way down and through the windshield. In that time I have had 2 other small chips to the glass and as of now they have not spread in the heat but I will be watching closely. The crack effects my ability to see road clearly and is worrisome that any rock on the road has the ability to cause not only damage to the vehicle, but could cause an accident. In speaking with a coworker who has similar make and model to me, they have the same issues since buying their car in the last year.

One fray is 1/4" x 1/4", is 30" from the tip end of the connector tongue, and has separated the belt. The second fray is 1/4" x 11/4" and is 34" from the tip end of the connector tongue. Both frays are on the same side or edge of the belt. Other than the frays, the belt was in new condition. I believe the belt to have been furnished in a defective condition or there is a defect in the retracting apparatus. There is no external cause of the fraying that I could determine. The belt has been replaced by the dealer, adventure subaru, of fayetteville, arkansas. A separate complaint will be submitted related to a 2019 ascent we own that had three belts replaced with nearly identical fraying patterns.

Doctors said it was almost miraculous she survived. The is significant data available on the impact of airbags. The forces expended and the bodily damages that can occur. It must be known the a body so close to the activation of the airbag could have fatal consequence but so little has been made public about this danger. We've heard about devices exploding and causing injuries and fatalities but from sitting so close to the steering wheel. And a simple fix, if the seat is fully forward, the airbag is deactivated or test to find a place where it would not be a dangerous weapon. To be injured severely or even killed by safety equipment is the height of stupidity especially when it worked as designed.

Windshield cracked on its own from bottom half edge on passengers side and approximately 14” long. Was in the driveway at my child's daycare, went up to the door, and in that time, the windshield spontaneously cracked. Daycare checked cameras and no branch or object struck the windshield. The crack is in my line of sight part of the time, is extremely noticeable, and at times is an obstruction of view. Also, if something were to actually impact the windshield, I wouldn't have much for protection but clearly the windshield was not much for protection to begin with. Dealership says it must've been a chip but I had just washed my car including the windows and I notice everything and document everything since this is my first purchase of a brand new car. There was no visible chip. I don't go off-roading or anything of the sort. I 100% believe this is a defect that has been ongoing for subaru. Dealer gave me a business card to a repair place. Contacted subaru and they give me a 0 certificate to use towards a windshield replacement at a dealership but the dealership will not replace the windshield, most likely because this has been an ongoing issue with subaru and if the new windshield is not installed by a subaru dealer, it's not covered under warranty. So, essentially I got a useless gift certificate. There should have been some sort of disclosure or better yet, some accountability for the poor quality and safety hazard the windshield presents.

My 2022 subaru outback is 9 month old with only 9432 miles. On 3/31/2022 the windshield suffered the spontaneous windshield breakage problem that subaru's suffer from. The windshield cracked from the lower left corner of the glass (looking from the front of the car to the windshield). There was nothing that hit the glass. There is no marks on it other than the crack that starts from the lower left edge. The classic subaru windshield failure issue.

This is on my 2022 subaru outback touring xt around 5500+ miles on my brand car the windshield cracked from the bottom center to the middle straight up. After this incident, we are hesitant to drive hence didn't take the car out for a drive and I see the crack started to expand little by little; which is of more concern for me as this is our family car.

I purchased a brand new 2022 subaru outback. Drove for 2 weeks. Absolutely nothing but raindrops have hit this windshield and a crack began to form at the edge of the windshield and slowly grow across the entire windshield over the course of 2 days. It's right in my eye-line. I went online to see what might be happening and am seeing tons of threads on various sites about this exact problem. I do not feel its fair to pay my full 00 deductible for damage which I believe is related to a manufacturing or corporate issue. I believe this year needs to be included in the existing recall that I am seeing for similar models.

Front windshield had to be replaced the same day it was driven off the lot. 2 weeks after replacement the windshield cracked again. Dealership and safe lite both claim it's not their problem. Insurance stated if I continue getting the windshield replaced after every break then they are going to keep raise my rates because of frequently claiming issues. I paid almost ,000 for this vehicle which requires 4hrs for replacement and programming because of the front facing cameras it requires for safe driving. 4 hrs …if …no one else is already scheduled so I'm recommended to leave the car over night but no loaner vehicles will be provided. The additional film required to protect the exterior of the windshield is 300% more expensive than the windshield itself. Now every month I have to replace my windshield due to breaking and the obligatory film I and up paying approximately 0 per instance and pay an insurance rate increase. How is this fair or legal? My car payment is already 0 per month. Monthly repairs for only the windshield are equaling 80% of my already monthly expenses before any other costs. How is this fair or legal? Is there any open lawsuits I can join or any other options?

The 2022 subaru outback has a "feature" called auto start stop. This is intended as a fuel saving feature. In the car's setup menu, you have the choice to turn this feature off. However, this feature must be turned off each and every time you start the car. The change is not held in memory. This fact was confirmed by a subaru customer service representative in a call on the morning of 9/7/2021. This auto start/stop feature works just like a gasoline powered golf cart. Take your foot off the gas and the engine dies. Press the accelerator and the engine restarts. However, there is not oncoming traffic on a golf course. If the wheels are canted to the left or right, a notable amount of force is experienced in the steering wheel. Subaru should be forced immediately to make a software change to allow this feature to be disabled permanently. I also suspect that in extreme cold or as these vehicles age, this "feature" will become an extreme safety hazard.

The initial incident occurred on july 31, 2021. I used the push button start to start the car, put the vehicle in reverse, and the vehicle proceeded to roll uncontrolled down my driveway, which is on a slope. I had no power steering or power brakes. I was able to safely stop the vehicle with no incident other than damage to the plastic over the right rear taillight. I turned the vehicle off and restarted it, and everything seemed operational. It seemed that the car's engine had not turned on, only the electrical system. The same issue happened repeatedly over the next few days. In observing what was happening, I have noticed that the push button ignition requires a significant press in order for the vehicle to start correctly - quite different from my experience with our previous two push-button start vehicles. In the "getting started guide, outback 2022", p. 41, instructions clearly state "briefly press and release the engine start/stop button." I submit that this is inaccurate, and that new vehicle owners should be advised as to what to do, and what to look for in the dashboard to understand that the vehicle engine has, in fact, started properly. I am a user experience researcher, including in automotive research, and we have an expression that there's no such thing as user error, just poor design. This is a clear example of poor design.

I own a 2022 outback the eye sight has been flakey from day one. Also on Oct 10th I took car to the dealer because check engine light was on. They said the thermo control valve was bad and needed to be replaced. Well its Dec 5th and I had an appointment for the 7th but they canceled due to not having gasket. Because everything is on back order. Meanwhile my wife and kids are riding in a vehicle that has no heat. The check engine light is on so eye sight is disabled with other things . My car is in limp mode and I have lost 3 to 4 mpg. This is the second subaru I’ve owned and probably the last.

I have a Subaru Outback 2022. This is the second time where I couldn’t start the vehicle, battery dead and I had to use jumper cables. At the Subaru dealership, my battery was inspected and no problems were found. Recommendations from the dealer were to drive at least 30 miles on the highway weekly. I use my car every day on shirt trips. Does this sound right? I have not had similar battery problems with Ford and Toyota vehicles.

I have a Subaru Outback 2022 Limited. The windshield has been replaced 3 times. More importantly, I have had an ongoing issue with the computer. The screen has turned off while I’m driving, and all dials spiked, then turned on again as normal operations. The mpg will read 99 mi/gal now and then and generally be all over the map in unrealistic ways. Recently I backed into a mailbox that completely cracked the back windshield, the car didn’t make a “peep” before the impact, although it seems to beep at every other thing even if it’s not a threat.
Approximately 4 days later I was rear ended on the highway. Barely a fender bender, but the computer got much much worse, the hatch will beep endlessly, and the battery completely dead. I replaced the battery in Austin 2 months ago, again at the dealership in Vancouver Washington and again a month later when I finally got it out of the shop. Now I’m stuck in seaside Oregon because the car won’t start again, and the hatch is beeping as well. I’ve living in fear that my car won’t start again. That will leave me stranded in some vacant or dangerous area, and I’m traveling as a solo female.
I’ve lost a lot of time and money missing work due to this situation. This is my 3rd and last Subaru
