Volkswagen Tiguan infotainment system not working

Lemberg Law is conducting a class action investigation into infotainment system and instrument cluster failures in Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles from the 2022 through 2024 model years after a growing number of owners reported screens freezing, shutting off, or failing to start.

Let’s dive in.

What’s the Problem with the VW Tiguan Infotainment System?

The Volkswagen Tiguan relies on a central infotainment screen and digital instrument display for many vehicle functions. The system manages navigation, cameras, vehicle settings, and display controls.

However, many owners report that the infotainment system may fail to start, freeze while driving, or reboot unexpectedly. In several complaints, the screen remains black for long periods after the vehicle starts.

Because the backup camera display appears on the infotainment screen, these failures can also remove the camera view when reversing.

Owners frequently describe symptoms such as:

  • Infotainment screen failing to turn on after startup
  • Long delays before the system becomes operational
  • Screens freezing or shutting down during driving
  • Instrument cluster display becoming extremely dim or black
  • Loss of the backup camera display when reversing
  • System rebooting without warning

In some cases, both the infotainment display and the instrument cluster are affected at the same time.

What are Owners Experiencing?

Here are several representative complaint excerpts from Volkswagen Tiguan owners describing these display failures.

“Infotainment system fails to come on when car is first started. Depending on the outside temperature, it can take 30+ minutes for the system to start. The lower the temperature, the longer it takes. This means that when the car is used for local errands, the system might never come on in cold weather. Therefore there is no backup camera available for maneuvering in a car that has poor rear visibility.”

“The vehicle’s infotainment display intermittently freezes or shuts off while the vehicle is in operation. When this occurs, the rearview backup camera display also fails or becomes unavailable. The malfunction happens randomly during normal driving conditions.”

Several complaints also mention dealership visits did not resolve the issue. Take a look at this example:

“The infotainment system does not turn on on most occasions even after trying to reset it by long pressing the power button. Sometimes it takes about 15 minutes or so for the infotainment system to turn on. There is no way one can see the rear of the car without the rear camera feed on the infotainment screen. This is a serious safety issue. This problem has persisted even after the over the air software update. Also, this issue seems to be a widespread issue with multiple people complaining about this on many online forums.”

What Can You Do If Your Tiguan Screen Fails?

If your Volkswagen Tiguan experiences infotainment or instrument display failures, documenting the issue may help clarify whether the problem persists.

Consider taking steps such as:

  • Record when the screen fails to start or shuts off
  • Take photos or video of the malfunction when safe
  • Keep records of dealership inspections and repairs
  • Save all service invoices and repair estimates
  • Ask the dealer whether software updates or technical service bulletins apply to your vehicle

Detailed records can help show whether the problem continues despite repair attempts.

Your Legal Rights

Depending on your state and the vehicle’s repair history, repeated infotainment or display failures may involve:

  • warranty protections
  • lemon law rights
  • state consumer protection statutes
  • class action litigation

Each case depends on the facts, including repair attempts and time out of service.
