Volkswagen ID.4 Infotainment System Going Black Investigation (2021–2024)
Class Action Investigation

Lemberg Law is conducting a class action investigation into infotainment and instrument cluster failures in Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles from the 2021 through 2024 model years after a growing number of owners reported screens shutting off, rebooting, or going completely blank while driving.
Let’s take a closer look.
What’s the Problem with Volkswagen ID.4 Displays?
The Volkswagen ID.4 uses a fully digital dashboard and central infotainment screen. These displays provide information about speed, navigation, cameras, driver assistance systems, and vehicle controls.
Unlike traditional vehicles with analog gauges, the ID.4 relies heavily on these digital displays for basic driving information. As a result, when the system fails, drivers may temporarily lose access to key vehicle data.
Owners report that the displays may suddenly reboot, freeze, or turn black while the vehicle is moving.
Reported symptoms include:
- Infotainment screen going completely black
- Instrument cluster losing speed and vehicle information
- Screens rebooting while the vehicle is in motion
- Loss of navigation, radio, and smartphone connectivity
- Temporary loss of driver assistance indicators
- Backup camera feed disappearing
In some cases, both the center infotainment screen and the driver display shut down at the same time.
What are Owners Experiencing?
Here are several representative complaint excerpts from Volkswagen ID.4 owners describing these display failures.
“Infotainment and dashboard are blanking out while driving. System appears to be rebooting. Lose entire display and radio. This has happened multiple times, twice in one day.”
“The infotainment system in my vehicle has cut out and gone black for a good ten minutes while I’m driving and this has happened twice now and there is no remedy for the recall and this is upsetting because it could be a safety concern.”
“While driving the infotainment system switched off entirely, the screen went black and after roughly 1 minute rebooted. I had both my hands on the steering wheel and was NOT operating the infotainment system.”
“While driving the radio stopped playing then the infotainment center went black (turned off) and the instrument display, including the speedometer and ADAS, turned off. The vehicle kept driving but no speed information was available which is a safety risk to myself and others.”
What Can You Do If Your ID.4 Screen Shuts Down?
If your Volkswagen ID.4 experiences infotainment or instrument cluster failures, it helps to document the issue carefully.
Consider taking steps such as:
- Record when the screens turn off or reboot
- Take photos or video of the malfunction when safe
- Keep records of dealership inspections and repairs
- Save all service invoices and software update records
- Ask the dealer whether additional updates apply to your vehicle
Your Legal Rights
Depending on your state and repair history, repeated infotainment or instrument cluster failures may involve:
- warranty protections
- lemon law rights
- state consumer protection statutes
- class action litigation
Each case depends on specific facts, including repair attempts and time out of service.
