Gilead Sciences Data Breach: Social Security Info Exposed in Mailing Error
Lemberg Law is actively investigating the Gilead Sciences, Inc. data breach, which may have exposed sensitive personal information of U.S. residents. If you received a notification letter, your private data—including your Social Security number—could be at risk.
What Happened?
On February 18, 2025, Trusaic, a third-party compliance vendor for Gilead Sciences, discovered that its mailing partner, Billing Document Specialists (BDS), mistakenly printed sensitive information on envelope labels during a routine mailing.
Specifically, BDS mailed 1095-C tax forms that displayed an 18-digit identifier through the envelope window. This number included the recipient’s Social Security number. BDS sent the affected mailing on February 7, 2025.
Although Gilead Sciences did not directly handle the mailing, it relied on Trusaic’s services for ACA compliance and reporting. Trusaic has confirmed there was no intrusion into internal servers or encrypted databases.
What Was Leaked?
According to the notification, the mailing labels contained a combination of numbers, one of which embedded the recipient’s Social Security number. This information was visible to anyone handling the envelope, potentially exposing recipients to identity theft.
What Has Gilead Done in Response?
Trusaic reports that it has implemented additional technical and operational safeguards in partnership with BDS. As part of its response, it is offering affected individuals 24 months of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection.
