Lemberg Law is investigating multiple complaints from 2024 Cadillac Lyriq owners whose headlights malfunction. The main complaint is now referred to as the Lyriq headlight droop. Drivers often can’t see more than a car’s length ahead of them and the headlight beams aren’t aligned. It is a safety risk that some say is so bad they can’t drive at night.

Headlight Adjustment and Functionally

Complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and widespread comment on Cadillac Forums prove that there are major issues with the 2024 Cadillac Lyriq headlights. Identified as a major safety issue, many owners are concerned that dealers aren’t able to help solve the issue.

A typical description of the problem indicates that the headlights literally droop while driving. While they are promoted as being self-leveling lights, owners find they have to stop the car and then restart it to get the headlights to normalize.

What Owners are Reporting

Typically, 2024 Cadillac Lyriq owners talk about their headlights drooping. They also say that the beam of light constantly resets itself and doesn’t align on the road ahead it should be illuminating. Sometimes the lights, which are supposedly self-leveling, point upwards, and sometimes they point down.

NHTSA Summary

Predictably, complaints about the 2024 Lyriq headlights are found in the Exterior Lighting category.

An owner from Texas states that the headlights “droop” after driving 20 minutes or more. “They start off okay and then become non-existent, pointing directly down toward the pavement in front of the vehicle and you can’t see more than 1 car length in front of you. You must turn the vehicle off and then back on to reset the headlights to drive. This is a huge safety issue for driving at night.”

Describing very similar symptoms, an owner from New Hampshire states that the headlights start drooping as soon as the car is being driven. Every 10-15 miles, the driver has to pull the car over and restart “as you cannot see further than a car’s length in front of you.” When you cycle the car off and then back on the headlights return to normal for another 10 miles, the complaint states. Additionally, it “seems that some of the individual lamps start pointing upward, blinding oncoming drivers.” This happens even if most of the lamps are pointing down in front, less than a car’s length. “It seems the headlights are making adjustments that are not correct until you do a power cycle.”

An owner from Colorado points out that the headlamps “are supposed to be self leveling, maintaining a consistent throw throughout a drive. My left headlamp droops significantly after 10-15 minutes of driving, failing to throw its beam more than 15 feet ahead. This poses a safety risk because it decreases my ability to see pedestrians or road hazards.” The complaint, which was submitted with photographs to prove the problem, states that “it is a known issue to which GM had no current solution.”

Forum Summary

Lyriq headlight issues have created an ongoing conversation since August 2023. Most describe in detail what happens to the headlights at night. Several owners have posted photographs and videos. Many complain that dealers can’t or won’t help them.

One owner reports that, “The first dealer-fix for the headlights, they just adjusted them up. But they drooped again. The car is back at the dealer and they can’t recreate the problem.” — turns out they don’t work at night!

Other owners were told it was a software problem.

Here are two short case histories.

Video Gets Owners a Loaner and a New Headlight Assembly

The initial post states that the headlights don’t throw the beam correctly, or they are very dim. He took the car to the dealer multiple times and they checked the alignment, only to announce that they were “working as expected.” Eventually, he filmed the headlight malfunction …

“After driving at night with the headlights on low (high beams are affected as well but in a different way)… after about 15 or 20 mins the low beam throw gradually reduces from being really outstanding to dangerously short. In fact, I would say that it only throws the light a car length or less. Once you stop the car, place (it) in park, and turn (it) off and then turn back on, the low beams ‘reset’ back to the outstanding starting point.” This was happening every night, so he filmed what he saw from the driver’s seat. After sharing the video with the dealer, he was given a loaner.

A couple of weeks later, he said they installed new headlight assemblies and that seemed to solve the issue. But, “Can’t tell if they are aligned correctly. The throw is different from the new lights vs the reset old lights. Which one is right… don’t know yet.” There is no feedback in the forum thread as to whether it was successful or not.

Video Gains Attention, but New Headlamp Also Fails

Another owner wasn’t as lucky. “The very first time I drove my vehicle at night the lights did the exact same thing as described and shown in pictures and videos. I have a 2024 Sport 1.

“My dealer tried to replicate this by sitting in front of a garage door for 20 mins not moving. They wrote me off. I tried to contact the Cadillac EV concierge and that was a waste of time. I have since filed a complaint with the NHTSA. He says he knew getting a first year model there would be issues. “This is a major safety issue and needs to be addressed before someone gets hurt or killed due to a faulty light or programming. I just want Cadillac or my dealer to take this issue seriously and they are not.”

So, he also made a video — Lyriq headlight droop. Eventually, the dealer replaced the passenger side headlamp, but that didn’t work. “I left the dealership just before dark and when I arrived home the new lamp had already dropped. It was just as significant as before.”

He believes it is probably a software communication issue, but states: “I have had a few trips in the vehicle where the lights were flawless and performed as designed. Most of them result in the droop. I’m at the point where I’ll wait until this issue is resolved by GM before I keep throwing more parts that don’t fix the issue.”
