2020 Genesis G90 Problems and Top Complaints – Is Your Car A Lemon?

Wheels and exterior lighting/visibility issues among the top complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners

Updated on Author: Brian Jones

Luxury models don’t compare to the style and class of the 2020 Genesis G90. Even the automaker boasts that this vehicle is “balanced with emotion and serenity.” However, this balance isn’t enough to keep the owners happy. Between the defective wheels and the poor visibility, customers are ready to trade in the high-end Genesis for something else.

Problems with the Wheels

The only part of a vehicle touching the road is the tires, which is why they must be in great condition to keep everyone safe. With the Genesis model, customers assume that the higher price means better components, but it seems the company skimped on the wheels.

Here is an NHTSA complaint that discusses the matter further. “The Continental ContiProContact tires on my 2020 Genesis G90 have a constant vibration. It feels like you are driving over rumble strips. On 2/12/2020 (1 week after purchase), called the dealer to report the problem. The dealer said they talked to Genesis and Genesis said they had no knowledge of a tire problem. On 2/18/2020, a second dealer rebalanced the tires. Did not fix the problem. On 2/23/2020, a third Genesis dealer said that some Continental tires had a problem and were being replaced.

The complainant continues…

Then on 3/16/2020, called the original dealer to inform them about the tire problem again. Next on 3/27/2020, was told by the original dealer to call Genesis and report the problem. Genesis said they could not do anything and should call Continental. On 3/27/2020, called the original dealer to have them call Continental Tire. On 4/2/2020, the original dealer said they could not get a response from Continental Tire and they said I should go to a local tire dealer. The local tire dealer, after talking to Continental Tire, said they could not do anything with the tires, but I could buy a new set for 50% off.”

With all this documentation, one would think it would have been easy for this customer to get help from Genesis, but all they got was the runaround. In fact, the automaker is only talking about tire maintenance by issuing one communications, Service Bulletin #20-SS-002H(1). Maybe the luxury company should focus more on putting decent tires on the vehicle rather than maintaining them. But, when all else fails, customers can get half price on new (defective) tires. What a deal!

Exterior Lighting/Visibility Problems

JD Power did a complete analysis about what customers think about the Genesis G90. In that assessment, some of the problems had to do with both the visibility and exterior lighting.

Here’s the review from JD Power. “G90 respondents were less enthusiastic about the car’s exterior styling, headlight effectiveness, ease of ingress and egress, and outward visibility.

It turns out that Genesis is fully aware of trouble with the headlights and has done nothing to remedy the situation. Service Bulletin #20-BD-014H states that the daytime running lamps, rear combination lamps, headlamps and fog lamps can suffer from moisture accumulation and condensation. In this communication, the automaker simply seeks to talk about the issues that lead to condensation, while reminding technicians not to replace the defective lamp assemblies. Instead, Genesis wants technicians to turn on the engine and run the lamps for several minutes, to hopefully burn off the condensation. However, if this solution worked, customers would be able to do it themselves. This is a problem that would be expected from a jalopy, not a high-end premium vehicle. Genesis needs to step up its game or start charging rock-bottom pricing on their vehicles because the quality is downright cheap.
