What I Found When I Started Investigating 2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid Complaints

Problem analysis of the 2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid reveals issues including hybrid system failures, sudden loss of power, unexplained loud noises, seatbelt malfunctions, and delayed recall repairs.

2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Toyota and reliability go hand in hand. Right? Right. But even Toyotas can have problems, that is just how vehicle manufacturing works.

My name is Sergei Lemberg, and I’m a lemon law attorney with over twenty years of experience representing consumers in vehicle defect cases.

As part of our ongoing series on common car problems, I dove into the top issues facing 2026 Toyota Camry owners. I reviewed NHTSA data, owner complaints, and our own internal data. As always, it’s worth noting that not all Camry Hybrids will experience these issues. These are simply the most commonly reported defects, likely affecting a small percentage of vehicles.

Let’s dive in.

2026 Camry Most Common Problems

After reviewing multiple data sources including NHTSA complaints, industry reports, and Lemberg Law’s internal case data, I found that the 2026 Toyota Camry has several recurring issues. Based on complaint frequency and severity, the primary problems include:

  • Hybrid Propulsion System Failures: Sudden loss of power and hybrid system malfunction warnings have been reported, sometimes resulting in the vehicle becoming inoperable.
  • Seatbelt Restraint System Malfunctions: Reports of seatbelts unexpectedly disengaging while driving, increasing safety risks especially during crashes.
  • Unexplained Loud Noises: Excessive squealing or whining sounds during driving and turning, which dealers sometimes dismiss as normal but owners disagree.
  • Sudden and Unintended Acceleration or Deceleration: Some owners experienced abrupt acceleration or deceleration without warning, leading to crashes or near-accident situations.

Other minor issues noted in verified reports include popping noises from seats and problems with sunroof glass spontaneously shattering.

Top Problem #1: Hybrid Propulsion System Failures

I found that hybrid system failures are the most commonly issue reported among Camry owners. The defect involves an improperly torqued bolt inside the hybrid inverter assembly, leading to sudden power loss or even fire risk.

Common symptoms include:

  • Sudden deceleration at highway speeds
  • “Hybrid System Malfunction” warning displayed on the dashboard
  • Check engine light illumination
  • Vehicle becoming immediately inoperable
  • Loud beeping alarms during failure

Several owners described their experiences:

“While driving approximately 65 MPH, the vehicle suddenly decelerated, with an audible beeping alarm activated and the check engine warning light illuminated. The message ‘Hybrid System Malfunction’ was displayed.”

Toyota issued a safety recall (NHTSA Campaign 25V869000) regarding this issue, confirming the defect’s seriousness. Unfortunately, a permanent remedy is delayed until at least the first quarter of 2026, leaving many vehicle owners exposed.

Top Problem #2: Seatbelt Restraint System Malfunctions

Another top issue is seatbelts unexpectedly unlatching during driving. Symptoms include:

  • Seatbelt disengaging without intentional release
  • No prior warning lights or alerts
  • Incidents occurring during normal driving conditions
  • Seatbelt failures coinciding with vehicle crashes

Owner statements illustrate the risk:

“The seatbelt unbuckled during vehicle operation, contributing to injury during a single-vehicle accident in Texas. The seatbelt was properly fastened prior to the incident, and no warning lights were present. This appears to be a potential defect in the seatbelt restraint system and presents a serious safety risk. ”

Top Problem #3: Unexplained Loud Noises

I found reports of loud squealing or whining noises coming from the hybrid system or elsewhere in the vehicle. Owners report concerns that these noises signal mechanical problems.

Typical reports state:

  • Loud squealing while driving and turning
  • No similar noise in comparable Camrys or loaner vehicles
  • Dealers attributing noise to normal hybrid operation
  • Owner skepticism about dealer explanations

One complaint reads:

“The vehicle is producing an extremely loud squealing/whining noise while driving and turning. The sound occurs at both low and high speeds. It is not subtle and it is loud enough to be heard, my neighbors have noticed it as well. The sound resembles something rubbing or grinding against something else.”

Top Problem #4: Sudden and Unintended Acceleration or Deceleration

While less common, I found reports of abrupt vehicle acceleration or deceleration, sometimes linked to safety system failures.

Issues reported include:

  • Vehicle suddenly accelerating into obstacles
  • Inability to slow or stop despite applying brakes
  • Airbags deploying without typical braking or impact signals
  • Serious collisions and injuries resulting

A harrowing owner report states:

“My Camry suddenly accelerated when pulling into a handicap space, Suddenly the vehicle jumped the concrete barrier and sidewalk and hit a building. The airbags did not deploy and the seat belts came off as normal. The building was not damaged but my wife sustained a shoulder injury and whiplash.”

What Should You Do If Your 2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid Is a Lemon?

I want to stress what qualifies a vehicle as a lemon under state laws. Typically, a lemon is a vehicle with a substantial defect affecting use, value, or safety, that remains unresolved after a reasonable number of repair attempts.

If you own a 2026 Toyota Camry Hybrid and have experienced recurring problems such as those I described, I advise you to start documenting every repair visit, communication with your dealer or manufacturer, and any related costs or safety issues.

Many states provide lemon law protections which may entitle you to a replacement vehicle or refund. You do not have to pursue this alone. Lemberg Law offers free lemon law consultations and handles your case on a contingency basis, meaning you pay nothing unless we win your claim.

I encourage you to contact Lemberg Law today before important lemon law deadlines expire. I understand the urgency and will help you protect your legal rights efficiently and professionally.
