My Investigation into 2025 Toyota RAV4 Problems: What Owners Need to Know
Problem analysis of the 2025 Toyota RAV4 found issues including unexpected sudden acceleration, infotainment system glitches, battery failures, and sunroof shattering reported by multiple owners and safety agencies.

Key Points
- Our team analyzed real consumer complaints, NHTSA data, owner forums, social media reports, and internal cases to identify commonly reported problems with the 2025 Toyota RAV4.
- Owners report sudden unintended acceleration, infotainment and Android Auto issues, sunroof shattering, battery drain, dashboard blackouts, and other electrical failures.
- Owners with repeated or unresolved defects may have rights under state lemon laws, including a possible refund, replacement, or compensation.
I’m a lemon law attorney, so I’ve seen just about every type of vehicle issue over the years. And to be clear, Toyota makes a solid car. But when you look closely at the data, all vehicle manufacturers can show problem patterns worth paying attention to. That’s just the nature of mass production.
When I reviewed NHTSA complaints, owner forums, social media, and our own internal cases on the 2025 Toyota RAV4, a few issues came up consistently. My name is Sergei Lemberg, and I’ve spent over twenty years representing consumers in vehicle defect cases.
As part of our ongoing series, I took a closer look at the most common problems RAV4 owners are reporting right now. As always, not every vehicle will have these issues. These are patterns showing up across a relatively small percentage of cars, but enough to matter.
Let’s get into it.
Most Common Problems
Here’s what my research found for the most common issues:
- Sudden Unintended Acceleration: Vehicles unexpectedly surge forward while braking or coasting, creating dangerous driving conditions.
- Infotainment and Android Auto Connectivity Issues: Owners frequently experience unreliable Android Auto connection, erratic navigation displays, and audio source switching that distract the driver.
- Sunroof Spontaneous Shattering: Several owners report their sunroofs shattering without impact or warning, leading to hazardous glass debris.
- Battery and Electrical Failures: Electrical system problems, including battery drain, dashboard blackouts, and unexpected vehicle lock/unlock events.

Top Problem #1: Sudden Unintended Acceleration
Sudden unintended acceleration represents one of the most alarming defects reported by 2025 RAV4 owners. I reviewed multiple safety complaints and personal accounts describing this dangerous issue. The acceleration surges occur while coasting or braking without pressing the gas pedal, posing a grave risk to driver and passenger safety.
Common symptoms reported include:
- Sudden engine RPM spike while lifting foot off the accelerator.
- Vehicle lurching forward uncontrollably despite brake application.
- Inability to immediately stop or slow the vehicle until neutral gear is engaged.
- No warning lights or error messages prior to the event.
Owner quotes from NHTSA data illustrate the severity
“While I was very slowly driving into a parking space, the engine suddenly and unexpectedly surged. The vehicle accelerated with NO action on my part and collided with a stone wall approx 3 ft away and bounced back several feet.”
“I parked the vehicle, while applying very light pressure to the accelerator pedal with my right foot, I felt a gradual drop of several inches on the passenger side of the vehicle. Instinctively, I moved my right foot to the brake pedal and applied pressure, instead, it was accelerating forward. I pressed the brake pedal more firmly, and the vehicle accelerated further until it came to a complete stop after colliding with a rock on the driver’s side approximately 15 feet from the point of initial acceleration.”

Top Problem #2: Infotainment and Android Auto Issues
Infotainment glitches are widespread according to owner forums and complaints. I found many drivers unable to maintain stable Android Auto connections, which causes distraction and frustration in everyday use.
Symptoms include:
- Failure to connect Android Auto on first attempts, requiring multiple resets.
- Random disconnections and forced app audio takeover, interrupting radio broadcasts.
- Map and navigation displays showing incorrect or flashing locations.
- Screen blackouts when reversing, presenting potential safety hazards.
From owner feedback
“The vehicle’s CarPlay is malfunctioning, showing incorrect vehicle location and navigation directions. The vehicle’s screen often shows incorrect location and directions, and changes directions as it updates where it thinks the car is.”
“Sometimes, when the CarPlay is looking for the correct location, the map spins around and shifts location which is also distracting even when you try to ignore it. The consistent distraction this causes while trying to navigate through unknown streets has caused both my wife and I to get lost, take the wrong turns, or get stressed and confused while driving.”
Top Problem #3: Sunroof Spontaneous Shattering
One particularly troubling problem I reviewed involves the sunroof spontaneously shattering while driving, often without any impact or external cause.
Reported effects include:
- Loud explosion-like sound followed by falling glass shards inside and outside the vehicle.
- Safety risk from flying glass to occupants and nearby vehicles.
- Recurring incidents even when the sunroof is unused or closed.
Owner experiences explain
“Somehow the sunroof had exploded. There were no cars close to me and no overpasses or trees in the vicinity. I have had the car for almost 3 months and have never opened the sunroof.”
“When driving our Rav 4 we heard loud bang type noise. We stopped and pulled over and looked all around the Rav 4 and didn’t see anything. When I checked the roof I found our sunroof had shattered. The sunroof was closed at the time.”
Toyota dealerships confirm multiple calls about this defect, yet no nationwide recall has been issued as of this writing.
Top Problem #4: Battery and Electrical Failures
Electrical system failures have also emerged as a serious concern for 2025 RAV4 owners, particularly with battery drains and dashboard blackouts.
Common issues reported:
- Battery drainage overnight or with minimal usage, leading to inability to unlock or start the vehicle.
- Instrument panel intermittently going black or showing distorted images.
- Remote key fob commands causing unintended door unlocks or vehicle wake-ups.
- Electrical faults causing warning lights for critical systems without diagnostic clarity.
“Upon leaving the keys in the ignition overnight, the battery was drained. The jumper cables were in a compartment located inside the trunk but there was no keyhole for the trunk of the vehicle. Unable to unlock the vehicle due to the battery failure.”
“The instrument panel intermittently went black. The failure became persistent over time. The dealer was contacted and confirmed that the part was not yet available for the repair.”
Dealers report part unavailability delaying repairs and Toyota corporate has acknowledged some recalls related to electrical systems that remain unfixed for many affected vehicles.
What Should You Do If Your 2025 Toyota RAV4 Is a Lemon?
If your 2025 Toyota RAV4 shows persistent defects substantially impairing its use, value, or safety, it may qualify as a lemon under state consumer protection laws. I recommend documenting all repair attempts, service visits, and issues in detail. Keep copies of all repair orders and correspondences with the dealership and manufacturer.
You have the right to legal relief if the manufacturer fails to repair a significant defect within a reasonable number of attempts. Lemon law protections vary by state, but generally cover repeated defects affecting safety or operation.
