The 2025 Chevy Trax is a smaller SUV designed to be affordable. While there aren’t major standout issues, there are a lot of problems that are causing owners to complain to the NHTSA. Most of these relate to the electrical system and the engine, with the evaporator system being a particular gripe. The question is whether affordability justifies these issues.

Most Common Problems
Complaints about the 2025 Chevy Trax to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) are varied with electrical system issues topping the list of negativity. Owners also highlight issues with the engine and forward collision avoidance. One particularly dangerous issue reported in both the electrical system and engine relates to the evaporator system.
On a smaller scale, components and systems listed in NHTSA complaints in the airbags, fuel/propulsion system, lane departure, powertrain, service brakes, steering, structure, vehicle speed control, and both visibility and visibility/wiper. Of course, nothing is ever perfect, so it’s prudent to be aware of issues that owners are complaining about. That’s the best way to evaluate your options and/or assess whether the problems you are experiencing are common.
One issue, though apparently not common, relates to a complaint that cites a vehicle speed control problem that resulted in a crash with injuries. It was filed as a vehicle speed control issue.
While driving at 35 mph with cruise control mode disengaged, and approaching the red traffic light, the driver from Ohio depressed the brake pedal. While it responded temporarily, the vehicle suddenly accelerated unintendedly. The vehicle didn’t stop and the engine revved louder. The result was that the Chevy crashed into two occupied vehicles at the intersection of a highway. The Ohio owner of the vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to hospital, where he underwent a CT scan that showed he had two broken ribs. He was hospitalized for two weeks and spent about 10 days in a rehabilitation center. One of the other drivers sustained three broken ribs, but it was unknown whether this driver received medical assistance. All three vehicles were totaled.

Electrical Problems
Complaints about the electrical system range from Bluetooth and HVAC issues to problems with the dashboard display.
An owner from Michigan states how the main dashboard display went completely black and stayed black for the remainder of my drive cycle after shifting from reverse to drive. Oddly, during the incident, the infotainment screen remained working as normal. The dashboard display returned to normal operation at the next key-cycle. “It was dangerous because I could not see my speed, the engine temperature, or be aware of any warnings (had there been any). The engine appeared to run normally. I haven’t driven again to test if the problem reoccurs. I haven’t had the opportunity to bring it to the dealership for evaluation.”

Bluetooth Connectivity
Bluetooth has been the primary concern of an owner from Maine, who describes “a weird issue with my phone being connected via Bluetooth. This was only an issue when playing media from my phone, it was not an issue when listening to the regular radio. It would not happen all the time, just sporadically and without any correlation I could identify. The issue would present as a weird crackling noise through the speakers as if there was an issue with a connection. After a while of this happening sporadically, the cracking noise would be accompanied by my backup camera looking like a fish bowl.” Then the backup camera stopped working altogether. Eventually, the Chevy technicians did some updates, but they didn’t help. At the time of the complaint, the owner was waiting for a new backup camera.
An owner from LA had a whole lot of problems including electrical system and automatic braking malfunctions. Bluetooth was one of the issues, as was the backup camera. For example, “the electrical system stays on when doors are shut, engine off and key removed for prolonged amounts of time.” Also, the vehicle doesn’t brake, it only flashes and chimes when driving between 5-50 mph. “If I was to get into an accident and the car did not stop itself driving in the range it’s supposed to work then that will be an even larger issue at hand.”
Evaporator Issues
While some evaporator problems are listed as being electrical, others list them as being linked to the engine,
Another owner states that a defective HVAC system would only enable heat with the car temperature hitting 107 degrees. The complaint states that she believes it is the elevator system. “I have an 8-month-old baby (and) this is very dangerous.”
An owner from Ohio stated that the evaporator had gone out — and this was confirmed by the dealer. However, the parts were back-ordered, suggesting this is a major issue. There were no warnings, the AC “just stopped blowing out cold air. While the windows can still roll down, on extremely hot days if AC isn’t working, could cause health problems to some users.”
The evaporator coil is also cited as the problem part. “I purchased my 2025 Chevy Trax on July 14, 2024, and on August 26, 2024, the evaporator coil had to be replaced by the Houston Levee GMX.”
An owner from Tennessee also cites the evaporator as a problem after the A/C became inoperable. When the failure persisted, he took the vehicle to a dealer and the diagnosis was that the evaporator coil had failed and needed to be replaced. However, the part was on backorder. The dealer advised the contact to obtain a rental vehicle in the meantime, and that the manufacturer would reimburse the vehicle rental expenses. Standing their ground, the owner declined and was provided with a temporary vehicle. Happily, the vehicle was repaired under warranty after a month.
Engine Problems
Again, there are no focus issues about the engine, but there are clearly some major problems that owners need to be aware of.
One alarming complaint from an owner in New York tells how having driven 10 miles from home, and turning off the vehicle and parking it, there was suddenly “quite a bit of smoke coming from under the hood.” Within 10 minutes, the entire front of the car was on fire. The vehicle from (the) front bumper through the dashboard was completely destroyed. There were no warning lights on. I purchased the vehicle on June 5, 2024. My insurance co. did the appraisal and deemed it a total loss of course. “However, the dealership and General Motors refused to do anything to investigate the incident. “I have documentation of all calls. General Motors told me they do not put anything in writing.”
An owner from Tennessee tells how the check engine light came on after only three days (and 156 miles). OnStar ran a diagnostic that indicated the engine and transmission system were not performing as expected. It detected an issue with the fuel management system used to maintain control and monitor fuel consumption. “I took the vehicle back to the dealership and was advised that the fuel rail system needed to be replaced but the part(s) are not available and there is no projected date of arrival.”
Collision Avoidance
An owner from Texas tells how the 2025 Chevy Trax randomly disengages from adaptive cruise control and hard brakes when there is nothing in front of the vehicle.
Another owner tells how when traveling at 50-55 mph when the dashboard said the car in front was more than 2.5 sec from the car, the car in front slammed on brakes but did not come to a complete stop. “My braking system kicked in and started slowing me down. The car in front of me started accelerating again.” By then, he was doing 10-15 mph. “She slammed on her brakes again and my braking system kicked in again. But I also slammed my foot on the brake. My car did not stop immediately. It felt like the braking system had control over how fast I could stop my car.”
