Most Common Problems

The 2024 Ford F-150 has drawn the most complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for its electrical system. The top issue involves the digital instrument cluster, which frequently blacks out, flickers, or shuts down completely. Slightly fewer complaints mention braking problems or issues with the forward collision avoidance system, including failures of BlueCruise — Ford’s hands-free driving technology — that’s designed to manage steering, acceleration, and braking.

There are also numerous complaints about the powertrain and engine. Many of these overlap with electrical system problems. Other vehicle systems with reported issues include equipment, exterior lighting, fuel/propulsion, lane departure, seat belts, steering, structure, suspension, speed control, visibility, windshield wipers, and wheels.

A particularly alarming complaint involves an airbag malfunction during assembly. According to the report, the airbags exploded on Chassis Line 5 at Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan plant. Two employees were injured — one while sitting in the driver’s seat. The incident was reported to the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA). The line was stopped for 30-40 minutes, and workers expressed serious concern.

Cluster Screen Problems

Owners describe their dash screens cutting out, flickering, or turning completely black. These issues are often categorized under electrical system complaints.

  • An Illinois owner reported: “The screen in front of the driver, which displays key information like speed and gear, flickers and becomes distorted. It resets after turning the vehicle off and on but causes dangerous distractions.”
  • A Michigan driver stated: “While driving, both the instrument cluster and infotainment display flash on and off. Speed and safety info disappears. The dealer couldn’t replicate the issue.”
  • An Iowa owner shared: “The digital gauge cluster screen shuts off and on quickly, almost daily. It started after 2,000 miles.”
  • A Texas driver’s screen went dark completely. An Arkansas owner noticed colorful lines flashing across the display: “It’s distracting, and I’m worried I won’t be able to see key indicators. It’s gotten worse since I bought the truck three days ago.”

Forward Collision-Avoidance Problems

This system, including BlueCruise, is also the subject of multiple complaints:

  • A California owner rear-ended another vehicle after it suddenly switched lanes. The automatic braking system failed to activate in time.
  • In Texas, one owner reported the accelerator sticking multiple times, forcing them to use their foot to pull it up manually.
  • A Virginia owner experienced a full system failure during rain. The truck braked, put itself in Park, sounded the horn continuously, and wouldn’t restart.

BlueCruise Problems

Drivers have reported malfunctions linked to BlueCruise, especially involving its inability to detect driver attention through eyeglasses:

  • A Texas owner said BlueCruise couldn’t recognize her eyes at night due to her glasses. Cruise Control disengaged repeatedly.
  • Another Texas driver said the vehicle jerked multiple times, hazard lights turned on, and the system failed to verify that he was awake. The system shut off at just 100 miles. The dealer referred him to Ford.

Brake Problems

Brake-related complaints include system failure, warning errors, and unintended acceleration:

  • A West Virginia owner reported repeated failure messages and unsafe braking after dealer service.
  • Another West Virginia complaint described ABS and Hill Start Assist failures while driving.
  • A Michigan driver was involved in a crash when the truck accelerated instead of stopping. The vehicle hit a building, the horn sounded continuously, and the airbags deployed. The dealership refused to touch the truck, citing Ford liability.

Engine and Powertrain Problems

These issues include misfires, shuddering, unexpected acceleration, and engine damage:

  • A Michigan owner described a loud rattle and white smoke at highway speeds. FordPass flagged a misfire. Mileage: 700.
  • A Wisconsin driver experienced frequent shuddering. The dealer diagnosed a torque converter issue but said it was “as designed.”
  • In South Carolina, engine damage affected four out of six cylinders at just 269 miles. Ford denied a buyback request.
  • A Massachusetts owner reported the truck moving forward when Reverse was selected, matching the recall description for powertrain issues.
