2023 Lucid Air Problems and Top Complaints – Is Your Car A Lemon?

Electrical system related issues are the main cause of complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners

The 2023 Lucid Air is a BEV sedan created by Lucid Motors. The EV model was first unveiled in December 2016 but didn’t hit the streets until September 2021. This Lucid model is supposed to compete against the Fiskar Karma, Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan. Assembly of the Lucid Air occurs in Casa Grande, Arizona.

In 2022, Lucid Motors pulled in $608 million worth of revenue but reported a net loss of $1.3 billion. There were 7,000 vehicles built by the company that year, but only 4,500 were delivered. In 2023, the automaker plans to double those numbers and maybe earn a profit.

Most Common Problems with the 2023 Lucid Air

It can be tough to get a feel for the 2023 Lucid Air because there aren’t that many on the road. Yet, despite these EVs being rare on today’s roads, there are more complaints than imagined, proving that this model may not be all that it’s cracked up to be. It suffers from an extensive list of electrical system malfunctions but also has some vehicle speed control and structure complaints as well.

Electrical System Issues

  • Inoperative door locks: Some drivers are having trouble with the power door locks. Not only are there issues with the lock operating, but the car door isn’t sealing correctly either.
  • Inaccurate warning signals: Today’s vehicles are equipped with warning lights and sounds to let the driver know what’s wrong, but in the Lucid Air, warnings are going off that aren’t true. Owners have been trying to get the problems fixed and haven’t had a lot of success.
  • Car loses power: The EV can lose power at any time with no warning. One driver was on a long trip and the car lost power on the highway at night while traveling 72 mph.
  • Defective Auto Park feature: While using Auto Park, drivers have had to step in to ensure the EV didn’t hit another car. It seems this model has trouble discerning some fenders of cars, such as Tesla models.
  • Malfunctioning driver-assist programs: There have been complaints about the highway drive assist. It appears the EV doesn’t stay in its lane and often drifts. With this software, drivers have a false sense of security that could lead to a car accident.
  • Failed dashboard monitor: The dashboard monitor continues to malfunction and the camera views disappear. The only warning message given during this problem is “UNAVAILABLE.” Without this monitor and the necessary visibility, a crash is more likely.
  • Faulty Mileage Data: The actual miles displayed following a charge can be incorrect by around 30%. For example, one driver had 413 miles after a charge, but it only went about 270 miles. While weather and conditions can affect mileage, this driver was in southern California with mild temperatures and drove using regenerative braking.

Other Problems

  • Unexpected acceleration: Drivers have had to stop the Lucid Air from accelerating when it shouldn’t. For example, one driver pulled into a gated parking lot and the EV tried to accelerate as soon as the gate opened. Because the operator couldn’t brake the vehicle, it crashed into three other vehicles.
  • Failing headlights: Drivers have noticed the headlights intermittently failing. Sometimes they restart, but they usually fail again shortly after coming back on.
  • Excessive road noise: Even some of the top automotive publications are complaining about road noise. It seems that the 21” wheels and low-profile performance tires create more noise when driving on coarse pavement.
  • Lack of luxury: There’s also the issue of the premium price for the Lucid Air without the materials to match it. Publications have complained that the interior materials aren’t what would be expected for the inflated cost.
