For the third year in a row, Sergei Lemberg has been named the “most active” consumer attorney of the year by debt collection industry insider WebRecon.
WebRecon, which tracks the number of Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Telephone Consumer Protection Act cases filed in federal courts, reported that Lemberg, Principal of Lemberg Law, represented 508 consumers in TCPA and FDCPA cases during 2014. Lemberg represented more than twice the number of consumers as the second-ranked attorney.
Although Lemberg’s effectiveness often makes him the target of the debt collection industry, he says that he wears the badge of “most active consumer attorney” with pride. “I’m passionate about empowering my clients to stand up against debt collection agencies that use illegal tactics and break the law,” Lemberg says.
Lemberg notes that the FDCPA allows consumers who have been harassed by debt collectors to recover up to $1,000, plus court costs and attorney fees. Debt collectors who also violate the TCPA by, for example, robocalling a consumer’s cell phone, can be made to pay up to $1,500 per call.
“Consumer laws like the FDCPA and TCPA level the playing field,” says Lemberg. “It enables consumers to obtain legal representation either at no cost or on a contingency basis.”
Lemberg’s depth and breadth of experience in these and other consumer law issues have enabled Lemberg and his colleagues to recover more than $35 million for more than 12,000 clients. “I’m proud of the work that we do. Leveraging laws like the FDCPA and TCPA is the only mechanism available for reining in debt collectors’ most egregious behavior,” he says.
Lemberg shows no signs of backing down. “Having been named ‘most active consumer attorney’ for 2012, 2013, and 2014, I have a reputation to maintain,” he says with a smile.
