What I Found While Investigating 2024–2025 Chevrolet Trax Dashboard Failures: They Keep Going Blank

Class Action Investigation

Updated on Author: Sergei Lemberg

2025 Chevrolet Trax

The first call came from a 2024 Chevrolet Trax owner whose dashboard display went completely black while she was driving. The dealership told her they couldn’t duplicate the problem and sent her home.

A few days later, another Trax owner described the same failure. Then another.

After more than twenty years representing consumers in vehicle defect cases, I’ve learned to pay attention when owners describe identical malfunctions. I’m Sergei Lemberg, a consumer protection and lemon law attorney. My focus has always been on what owners experience after the sale, when the warranty visits start, the answers change, and the same problem keeps returning.

Repetition is what sends me digging. In this case, it led me through owner reports and recall documents connected to the Trax display failures.

By then, the volume and consistency of the reports justified opening a class action investigation. What follows is what I found.

What’s the Problem with the Trax Dashboard?

As I reviewed owner complaints, service records, and videos, a clear pattern began to emerge. Many 2024 and 2025 Chevrolet Trax owners describe dashboard and infotainment failures that appear early and repeat often.

The most common issues owners report include:

  • The instrument cluster going completely black while driving
  • The infotainment screen rebooting every 30 to 60 seconds
  • Speedometer and warning indicators disappearing
  • The screen entering a continuous on-off loop
  • The reverse camera activating unexpectedly while driving
  • Bluetooth and navigation disconnecting
  • The radio staying on after the vehicle is shut off

Complaint Examples

Here are a few of the complaints that highlight what owners are facing:

“Currently the Instrument Cluster and the Infotainment screens reboots roughly every 60 seconds. The screen would go black then reboot. Would temporary loose speed indicator as well as all other functions. ”

Instrument panel went black and radio went black after starting up car or while driving. Will get stuck in a loop of turning on and off while driving after 5 min returns back to normal.”

“Started car four times with no dashboard lights. The screen was blocked out. No speedometer or anything just black.”

Is There a Recall?

Some of the complaints I reviewed referenced a dashboard blackout recall affecting certain 2024 Trax vehicles. But many owners said they were told their VINs were excluded, even though their vehicles were experiencing the same failures.

That led me to examine the recall more closely.

General Motors acknowledged that a software defect in the Virtual Cockpit Unit could cause the instrument panel to blackout while driving, increasing crash risk. The recall applies to certain 2024 Chevrolet Trax vehicles, along with related Buick models.

What is included in Recall 23V-744?

Recall 23V-744 covers certain 2024 Chevrolet Trax vehicles equipped with the Virtual Cockpit Unit (VCU) software that can cause the instrument panel display to intermittently go black at startup or while driving.

Vehicles included:

  • 2024 Chevrolet Trax – 35,186 vehicles
  • 2024 Buick Encore GX – 17,306 vehicles
  • 2024 Buick Envista – 6,289 vehicles

Total recall population: 60,154 vehicles

I found it interesting that the recall does not include 2025 Trax vehicles. It also does not include all 2024 VINs.

So What Can You Do?

If you are dealing with repeated screen blackouts in your Trax, these steps can help secure your case and keep your records organized.

  1. Document everything. Keep repair orders, service invoices, and communications.
  2. Make sure service records describe the display failures clearly.
  3. Only if you can do so safely, record video of the blackout and/or reboot behavior.
  4. File a complaint with NHTSA to help document the pattern.
  5. Track how often the issue occurs and under what conditions
