What is wrong with the Chevy Equinox?

Lemberg Law is investigating reported complaints for the Chevy Equinox. There have been numerous complaints regarding a loss of engine power and issues with the turbo unit becoming disconnected from the throttle body. This causes a reduction in engine power.  Chevrolet has released a Technical Service Bulletin for this issues stating that trouble codes, P0172, P0299, P0101, P0506, P1101 may display when this issue occurs.

What Problems are Owners Experiencing with the Chevy Equinox?

Vehicle owners have reported a loss of engine power while driving. Typically, this is followed by a loud noise coming from under the hood and the warning code, “Engine Power is Reduced.” When the car is in this mode, also know as “limp mode,” the vehicle can be only driven no more than 15 miles per hour.

A vehicle owner from Florida stated:

“This 2019 Equinox is 1.6l diesel engine. I bought it brand new. I have been to the service 5 times with a problem message “engine power is reduced”. When this happens, the vehicle cannot run over 15mph. Every time this happens, I am on a freeway and all of a sudden the vehicle slows down and I cannot get it to run over 15mph. Very dangerous and big safety issue because in most case this happened, I semi-truck is behind me running at freeway speed limit, honking at me to get out of the way and I am nervously trying to find an emergency lane to stop. When I am on the fast lane, it is difficult to find an emergency quickly.”

Another owner left a similar complaint on the NHTSA complaint database: “The contact owns a 2019 Chevrolet equinox. While driving 55 mph, the contact heard a loud abnormal noise. The contact mentioned that the vehicle jerked violently, and the power reduced and check engine indicators illuminated. The vehicle was pulled over and the contact noticed that the turbo hose was disconnected from the engine. The vehicle was taken to Grieco Chevrolet of Fort Lauderdale (1300 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304) where the contact was informed that the faster needed to be replaced in the engine.”

Reduced engine power happens occasionally and wont change gears. After a lot of complaints they changed the waste gate. It worked for awhile until yesterday on the interstate. I have another appt on march 3rd, I have a list of things for them to check.

My 2016 Chevy with 40,000 miles lost engine power after getting this warning about the engine the day before.

Brand new 2023 Equinox RS 679 kilometres. Lost engine power. Dash reads Loss of Engine power and the check engine light is flashing. Called where I purchased. They said probably a Frozen Turbo to go to nearest dealership to confirm. Drive to dealership to find out. That we were the 10 th Equinox in the last 2 day with this problem. Chev knows that there is a problem but don’t have a fix and by talking with the dealerships. Really are not working on one. I am surprised no one has started a class action against Chev. As apparently this problem goes back a way

We sold our 2020 Equinox because of it. Took it into the local dealership and they re-tuned the engine to not use overdrive. Supposedly suggested by GM. We lost efficiency and we running super high RPM’s. Ended up taking a $3,000 lost. My parents are experiencing the same thing now. We don’t know what to do.

I own a 2016 Equinox. Bought it mid year of 2016, it had about 125 miles on it. Within the first year and a half, I had to replace cylinder 6 solenoid. About a year later the water pump began leaking. Summer of 2020, I had to fill with coolant about 3 times a week which became pricey after a few weeks. So I used water all through fall. In winter I went back to coolant. I had the bolts tightened and sealed. Problem solved for several months. In warmer weather, it began to leak and use more coolant/water, to the point of filling it every time I drive it, multiple times a day. Finally took it to a shop in 2021 to replace water pump. Equinox was running sluggish, whirling/whining noise, similar to power steering. Except, the 2016 is electric power steering. After the pump was replaced, it continued to over heat and lose coolant. Thermostat was replaced, problem solved. Now in 2022, it’s still running horribly, now the fuel pump, throttle position sensor are going out.
This is by far the worst brand new car I’ve owned. And I’ve owned several cars, used cars and NEVER have I had trouble like this that I’ve experienced with a new Chevy Equinox. It’s ridiculous. I don’t know what to do except get rid of it but I hate the thought of someone else inheriting my problem.

Sorry for the long comment, just want to spread my experience in hopes to save someone else the same trouble.

My Equanox 2019, has been having issues lately. Electric, lost of power while driving, starts issues. I’ve bought a battery charger which I now keep in my car at all times just in case and it barely has 37300 miles on it.

I have a 2017 Chevy Equinox and it has been in the shop 5 times for the same thing and I am over it all. I had it not even 2 weeks when they got it back for the 1st time due to losing all power and it would eventually die. This has happened to me 5 times and they still can’t seem to fix it or even tell me what is wrong with it because they say they don’t know.
