My Investigation Into 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe Problems: What to Need to Know
Lemberg Law’s investigation of the 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe identified reported issues including sudden engine shutdowns, hybrid battery failures, and transmission malfunctions.

Background of Our Investigation
My law firm, Lemberg Law, has continued to receive inquiries about the 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, particularly involving reports of power loss. We have been tracking similar issues dating back to the 2021 model year, which prompted me to take a closer look at the 2024 model.
I’m Sergei Lemberg, and for more than twenty years I’ve represented consumers in lemon law and vehicle defect cases. After reviewing owner complaints, recall information, NHTSA data, and related reports concerning the Wrangler 4xe, I summarize my findings below to help owners better understand the reported issues and their scope.
Let’s start with a summary of the most common issues followed by a breakdown of the top three problems.
Most Common Problems Reported
I reviewed hundreds of complaints and multiple data sources including NHTSA complaints, Lemberg Law internal data, and consumer forums to identify recurring issues with the 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe owners. Based on frequency, the primary problems include:
- Sudden Engine and Power Loss: Vehicles unexpectedly stall while driving without warning, often requiring multiple restart attempts.
- Hybrid Battery and Charging Failures: Battery packs fail to charge or rapidly discharge, sometimes linked to recall-related defects with no available fix yet.
- Transmission and Gear Shifting Malfunctions: Gear shifters become stuck in park or drive modes, sometimes accompanied by error messages and loss of vehicle control.
- Suspension “Death Wobble” and Steering Problems: Violent shaking during highway driving after hitting bumps, causing difficulty controlling the vehicle.
Other defects include heater failures, malfunctioning infotainment systems, and abnormal noises from the electric motor.
Sudden Engine and Power Loss
By far the most frequently reported issue with the 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe involves vehicles shutting off without warning while driving. This issue goes back several model years. We have addressed this power-loss issue in detail in a separate post focused specifically on that defect, so it is not repeated here. However, commonly reported symptoms include:
- The engine abruptly shuts down while driving, sometimes causing the vehicle to coast or stop unexpectedly
- No warning lights or audible alerts appear before the shutdown, leaving drivers unprepared
- The gear shift indicator blinks, and the vehicle displays a message instructing the driver to shift to Park and restart the engine
- After restarting, the vehicle may exhibit rough idling or jerking behavior

Hybrid Battery and Charging Failures
During our research into the Wrangler 4xe power-loss issue, it became clear that battery-related failures play a role in loss of propulsion. Battery failures can directly result in loss of propulsion and are further complicated by recalls that often lack an immediate fix. In addition, owners report being unable to charge their Jeep 4xe, or being warned not to charge it at all due to lithium-ion battery fire risks. Commonly reported issues include:
- Battery not charging beyond 1% at home or public chargers despite multiple outlets and chargers tested.
- Warning lights related to “service electric hybrid system” and battery overheating or cooling system errors.
- Vehicles subject to recall 25V-741 for high-voltage battery fire risk, but the recall fix remains unavailable or delayed.
- Batteries failing within months, resulting in replacements and downtime.
One owner shared, “[The] battery under [the] back seat exploded causing the vehicle fire that destroyed [the] inside of the jeep on 8/31/25 in front of my garage while charging.”
Transmission and Gear Shifting Malfunctions
Transmission-related defects are prominently reported. Owners describe difficulties shifting gears, dashboard error messages, and complete lockups while driving or stopped.
Common symptoms:
- “Service transmission” warnings followed by vehicle shutdowns requiring restarts.
- Gear shift stuck in park or drive, with flashing gear indicators and inability to move the vehicle without manual overrides.
- Transmission replacement recommended by dealers after failed repairs.
- Sudden jerks or “lurching” during gear changes causing loss of control.
- Repeated failures requiring extended dealership stays, sometimes exceeding lemon law thresholds.
According to one owner:
“I stopped at a stop light and the car shut down and an error displayed “Service Transmission” and the gear shift would not move. A few seconds later the error changed to ‘Park Brake Auto Engaged Press Brake + Push Switch to Release,’ I did this several times. After about 10 minutes the vehicle started with a service error message still on the dash.“
Suspension “Death Wobble” and Steering Issues
I found that the infamous “death wobble” affecting Wranglers continues into the 2024 4xe models. Several owners described violent shaking after driving over bumps at highway speeds, temporarily losing control.
Reported symptoms include:
- Violent vibrations and shaking lasting several seconds to minutes.
- Difficulty steering and maintaining lane position during these episodes.
- Common occurrences after hitting modest road imperfections or bumps.
- Dealers recommending stabilizer upgrades or dampers, but no permanent fix.
- Fear of crashes and severe safety concerns expressed by owners.
As one owner put it:
“After hitting a minor bump in the road on the highway traveling approx. 60 MPH, my Jeep began to shake unusually longer than one might expect going over a bump. It stopped after just a few seconds, and I continued driving. About five miles later, traveling approx. 65 MPH it happened again, after hitting a bump or expansion joints on the highway. This time the shaking lasted longer, maybe six or seven seconds until I was able to migrate to the slow lane, and once I reduced my speed it stopped.”
