Is There a Problem with the 2022 VW Tiguan Relating to Acceleration or Transmission Hesitation?
There is a very definite problem regarding the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan. Owners are complaining that the vehicle doesn’t accelerate from a stop, especially when it is cold.
Adding fuel to the fire, a class action lawsuit involving 2018-2020 Volkswagen Tiguan cars with the same issues was settled in January 2022. Owners reported a variety of symptoms including delayed acceleration, hesitation, and what they termed “banging into gear.” It turned out that vehicles equipped with an Aisin AWF8F35 8-speed automatic transmission were at risk of defects in the torque converter, ultimately causing transmission failure.
According to Volkswagen of America, Inc., all Tiguan models are equipped with a standard eight-speed automatic transmission for smooth power delivery. There is nothing to suggest that this is any different from the 2018-2020 transmissions.
What Acceleration Problems are 2022 VW Tiguan Owners Experiencing?
Between December 1, 2021, and November 17, 2022, 15 owners of the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan lodged complaints with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about acceleration hesitation issues. They listed their complaints under various categories: Vehicle Speed Control, Powertrain, the Electrical System, Engine, Fuel/Propulsion System, and Unknown or Other. But all say essentially the same thing. Acceleration fails or hesitates from a stop.
When a new owner from Florida bought his 2022 Tiguan, he reported the acceleration issue to the salesperson. He was told that it “would work itself out.” He was led to believe that the issue was due to low fuel and air in the fuel line. Then, when he took the vehicle in for a 350-mile service check, “I was told the issue can’t be duplicated. and nothing was wrong with the car.”
When he had done about 1,100 miles and took the Tiguan for its second service appointment, “the acceleration issue was more severe.” But no-one from VW is helping. “It’s a very frightening and dangerous situation. This issue is an accident waiting to happen.”
An owner from Washington states that he has had issues since his Tiguan had only 10 miles on the clock. It now registers 3,200 miles and acceleration still hesitates from a stop. “If making a left turn or cross traffic turn, when (my) vehicle hesitates it can cause a collision.”
A large percentage of the complaints state that problems are more severe when the engine is cold.
Is Cold an Issue that Affects Acceleration Hesitation Issues?
Complaints to the NHTSA indicate that cold is a very relevant factor.
For instance, an owner from Michigan states that the car “stumbles when cold” and won’t accelerate. “It does this for the first mile or two. Then it is OK. This has been happening for several months. The dealer says they hooked it up to their computer and can find no faults. It is very scary when trying to pull out into traffic or make a left turn into another street.”
An owner from Georgia states that the “vehicle jerks and bucks under acceleration when cold started and when moving from a stop light or sign.” It also “hesitates when pulling out like it’s attempting to locate a gear and throttle is unresponsive at first, then kicks in suddenly.”
An owner from Idaho also states he is having “a bad hesitation at acceleration. This happens every time at a cold start, as well as at a warm start if it sat for a few minutes after turning off. It has a terrible lag and bucking, at which point I have to accelerate hard to get it to go forward. This is a brand new car so should not be having these issues. I had our VW service department look at it in Twin Falls Idaho and was told they couldn’t find anything.”
And the complaints go on and on. As an owner from New Jersey states, “Vehicle regularly, stutters or hesitates strongly upon cold start. Throttle response under light to moderate acceleration results in hesitation or bucking. The situation starts to disappear after warm-up.”

Mine just started this today . It’s being towed to the dealership 😪. Everything I’ve read on here describes what it felt like driving home.

Hi my name is Alex and I have a 2022 Tiguan SE and I am experiencing all these issues. I actually just left the dealership about this issue they told me I had misfires in cyclinder 2 and replaced my spark plug and coil pack and said it’s most likely bad gas. Then on my way home it feels like the car is even worse.
