2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV

While the Chevrolet Equinox has been on our roads for two decades, the Chevrolet Equinox EV was launched in 2024. Promoted as “an affordable, functional, and stylish EV,” the automaker states that the focus of designers and engineers was on “style, space, safety, and value attributes.” However, a large number of owners are finding that reflections on the windshield make it very difficult for drivers to see. This causes eye fatigue and makes it very difficult to drive safely and see what is ahead. Many are concerned about the risks of this causing operating errors and accidents.

Most Common Problems

The most common complaints submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV involve visibility issues caused by severe dashboard glare. Owners say that under certain lighting conditions, reflections from the dashboard onto the windshield make it difficult and sometimes impossible to see the road clearly.

Other recurring complaints center on infotainment and display blackouts, as well as unexpected automatic emergency braking (AEB) when reversing.

Dashboard & Windshield Glare

If reflections on the windshield prevent drivers from seeing clearly, the risk of an accident increases significantly. Complaints about glare from the dashboard have been filed consistently since mid-2024.

  • An owner from California stated that when it is sunny, “there is so much glare from the dashboard on the windshield that it’s dangerous to drive and is not safe at all. The reflection blinds out the driver and there is no visibility.”
  • In October 2024, an owner described the glare as “so intense I often lose visibility of the road on sunny days or when passing under lamp posts at night. I’ve almost gotten into multiple accidents due to not seeing pedestrians and light-colored vehicles turning in front of me.”
  • A Rhode Island driver said that even polarized sunglasses didn’t help: “When rounding corners, you may not be able to see a pedestrian or bicycle on the side of the road because you cannot see through the glare.”
  • An owner from Florida reported that the problem is worse when dust accumulates on the windshield and dashboard, and it happens at all times of day “regardless of the car’s orientation towards the sun.”

Infotainment and Display Blackouts

Owners report that the driver’s instrument cluster and center infotainment screen can suddenly go blank while driving, sometimes taking several minutes to reboot. This leaves drivers without critical information such as speed, range, and navigation, and in some cases disables climate controls or driver-assist features.

  • An owner from Illinois stated that “both the driver’s display and center screen went black at 65 mph, leaving me with no speedometer, no range info, and no navigation. It was extremely unnerving, and the system didn’t come back until several minutes later.”
  • A Michigan driver described how the display blackout happened “three times in one week,” adding that “the last time, the heater stopped working at the same time, and the outside temperature was 19 degrees.”
  • An owner from Colorado said the screens froze before shutting off completely: “Once they went black, all my driving assistance features were disabled until I restarted the car.”

Unexpected Automatic Emergency Braking in Reverse

Some owners have experienced the rear automatic emergency braking (AEB) system slamming on the brakes while reversing, even when there are no visible obstacles.

  • An owner from New Jersey reported that “while backing out of a parking space at the grocery store, the vehicle came to a complete stop so hard my passenger’s head jerked forward. There was nothing behind me, and no warning chimes beforehand.”
  • A California driver stated that the AEB triggered “three times in one day while backing out of my driveway. I had to put the car in Park and then Reverse again to get it to move.”
  • An owner from Texas said it happened when pulling into a parking space: “The brakes locked so suddenly that both my wife and I had sore necks afterward.”

Forward Collision Avoidance Problems

Some complaints classified under forward collision avoidance involve the vehicle’s Super Cruise system disengaging unexpectedly or the automatic braking system activating for no reason.

  • An owner from North Carolina said that on the day of purchase, Super Cruise would “work for a few minutes before cutting out,” causing the car to brake in the middle of traffic and lose steering control. The dealer confirmed the problem but said GM engineers were still working on a fix.
  • A New Jersey driver reported that the forward collision warning triggered with no vehicles nearby, causing the AEB system to “bring the vehicle to a complete stop in the middle of the roadway.”
  • Another owner described the Equinox EV suddenly coming to a complete stop three times while backing up, with no objects in the vehicle’s path.
