Battery problems? Read our post on the 2021-2022 Ford Mach-E Battery Recall.
2021 is the first model of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, a battery-electric compact crossover SUV that was unveiled in 2019.
In its media release, Ford says, “It’s fast. It’s fun, It’s freedom.” They also describe it as “a car that strikes like forked lightning all over again.”
But not everything in every 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E functions correctly. Some owners report recurring problems, which means there are issues that might mean the car is a lemon.

There are already 20 complaints on file with the United States Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Additionally, there have been 9 manufacturer communications. Most of which discuss issues with the electrical system of this all-electric SUV.
We’re going to look at the most common problems on file with the NHTSA.
The most common problem in the NHTSA reports relates to the electrical system. Forward-collision avoidance is also a common complaint, as is visibility. Between them, these categories describe 13 problems. There are 5 complaints that relate to the electrical system and 4 each to the other problems.
Complainants describe 2 problems each about lane departure issues and the powertrain. Back-over prevention, the engine, seat belts, service brakes, and vehicle speed control all have 1 problem in the NHTSA complaints. There are also several random issues in the category Unknown or Other.
Complaints about electrical system issues are varied. One is from the owner of a brand new Mach-E, with only 200 miles on the clock. The complaint is that the stability track, traction control, and pre-collision warning lights all come on when the driver tries to start the car.
Another says that the tailgate of both their Mustang Mach-Es has opened spontaneously several times. Once the tailgate impacted a closed garage door causing about $1,500 in damage that they are claiming from insurance. Another time, it narrowly missed a 2-year-old child. This complaint states that the same fault has been reported by several other drivers on a Mach-E forum.
Two of the complaints relate to drivers using their cellphones as “a key” to get into and drive their cars. As one complaint states:
“This vehicle is sold with a single key FOB and an option to use Phone As A Key software. This feature has been a continual source of problems, as reported by almost every purchaser. It has been updated numerous times, including a dealer-installed software update. This is a serious safety issue.”
All this complainant wants is a second key fob at no cost!
The other complaint describes how the app option with his phone fails over and over again. “They need to pick one option. Make the phone-as-key product work or call it an experiment (which it is) and provide all Mach-E customers with two key fobs. They claim there is “a serious safety impact” by suggesting a compromise and expecting drivers to use a solution that doesn’t always work!
Failures relating to forward-collision avoidance elicit various responses in complaints. For example:
One says that there is “no clear sound or indication when BlueCruise disengages, leading to unexpected behavior.”
Another says, “If any of the passengers are unbuckled and the seat chime is on, the car does not have an audible forward-collision or pedestrian warning alert sound.”
The other complaints state that sensors and various functions don’t work when it is very cold. After some chilling experiences when driving while it’s been snowing, one owner complains:
“The Mach-E refuses to clear sensors unless it’s restarted. I do believe this compromises the safety of the driver and passengers by causing unnecessary extra driving with multiple instances of stopping and restarting while road conditions are really poor.”
All 3 of the visibility-related complaints are about the unavailability of parts for recall repairs. They all come from different parts of the U.S. – Texas, Florida, and Washington – so it isn’t an issue that relates to lack of delivery to any particular state.
All of them complain that the parts needed to carry out the repairs are not available. And they all maintain that Ford has exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the repairs.
The 3 complaints span 4 months, from 14 September 2021. Ironically, none of the complainants experienced a failure, they simply responded to the recall notifications.
An even more recent complaint dated 3 February 2022, states that the car’s panoramic roof was making a lot of wind noise. But the roof panel was still intact, and the recall isn’t mentioned.
There are already 4 recalls on the 2021 Ford Mustang-Mach-E. These potentially relate to as many as 35,116 vehicles, close to the 40,393 Ford reports selling to December 2021.
Two issues are related to visibility recalls:
The potential number of units affected is 17,692 and 13,544. It isn’t clear if the same vehicles have been recalled more than once. But as of 21 January 2022, when the most recent visibility complaint was lodged with NHTSA, there were no parts available to fix the problem. So, does it matter?
If you find yourself with a Ford Mustang Mach-E that has a substantial defect that the manufacturer cannot repair, it may be a lemon.
Lemberg Law specializes in Lemon Law and we will evaluate your case. You don’t have to be stuck with a lemon. We can negotiate a settlement that may involve a replacement vehicle, a refund for the purchase price, or a buy-back.
If you’ve bought a lemon, the law ensures that Ford will pay your legal bills.

Description | I went to start the vehicle and it gave me a red warning "stop safely now". It was already stopped and would not start at all. It had plenty of charge on the battery pack. It's been at the dealer for nearly two weeks and they have had to order the hvjbc, I believe. I am fortunate that it didn't fail while driving or parked in a place which was inaccessible to a tow truck. The forum I read recommended making a report. This seems to be an all to common problem with this car and can lead to sudden acceleration or deceleration while in motion. Had had received an earlier yellow warning for "service vehicle soon" and took it to the dealership and they assured me they had updated all the software (in the hopes of preventing the "stop safely now" problem). Obviously, that didn't work. |

Description | Unintended acceleration from a stop when pushing accelerator. Has happened 2 times in the last 2 days. I touched the throttle from a stop 2 time and it took off like I put the accelerator to full throttle (which I didn't). Very dangerous situation in parking lots or around pedestrians. I have scheduled an apt with my local dealer. |

Description | I have been trying to get the 2 open recalls on my vehicle done since november 2021. Ford says my dealer is authorized to do the work however my dealer refuses to do the work as ford will not reimburse the dealer fully as I was told the dealer has to outsource the work. The two other dealers here won't do my car as I didn't purchase my car with them. I have been talking to both ford customer service and my dealer windward ford hawaii and they both blame each other. Iford said the dealer should be able to do the work while the dealer says they can't until they work out the payment from ford. I just want the work done so my car is safe. I don't think I am the only one in hawaii that hasn't had this recall work done yetâ¦and it's not for lack of trying. Please let me know if there is anything that can be done so that mach-e drivers in hawaii can get this recall work done. |

Description | Ford released an ota update for the hvb issue mach-e were having and leaving drivers stranded. I have seen that even with the update many people are still having the cars break down while driving and needing the high voltage battery connector replaced. I am worried that this may happen to my car one day while driving and could cause an accident or death. Is there anyway to force ford to fix every car that had this issue before we break down? The temporary fix of software is not good. I think ford should be forced to recall all mach-e and replace the connector before there is an accident that leads to deaths on the road. |

Description | Stuck disk brake: the left rear disc brake was stuck. After releasing the parking brake the car would not move. After two attempts to reverse the brake released. There is a loud thumping sound from the rear wheel. While braking there is a violent vibration coming from the left rear wheel. The car is parked now and will be towed to a ford dealer. In the on-line ford mach-e forum there are other complaints about brakes being stuck with similar description as above. My car was last driven in wet weather and then parked in a garage. Temperatures at the time were cold but not freezing. The temperature at the time of incident was about 50 degrees fahrenheit. This seems to be a safety issue. |

Description | Occasional blank/inoperative info screen, typically recovers after reset or re-start, but sudden loss of visibility of all settings and controls for heat, navigation, and most importantly loss of the ability to enter backup start code for keyless start can cause possible stranding in dangerous conditions. Loss of control of heating/cooling could cause loss of visibility if defrost is unavailable, or heat stroke if air conditioning is unavailable. My understanding is that re-designed console screens are available to address this known defect in vehicles built prior to june 2022, but no recall has been issued. |

Description | After latest software updates, the mustang mache gets stuck in the guest profile regularly. These profiles are responsible for controlling driver aids, one pedal driving, etc. When stuck, my vehicle removes one pedal driving and the car moves unexpectedly. One pedal driving holds with no break, this is removed and the car creeps when break removed, this nearly caused the car to crash through the garage. This could injure people in parking lots, etc. There are many other driver aids controlled by the profile which could unexpectedly get disabled. I have personally figured out how to reset and recognize this after nearly crashing the car into the garage, but ford has issued no communications to their customers on how to recognize and revert when this issue occurs. When manufactures issue over the air updates, the need to be responsible for communicating issues and workarounds to their customers directly. The dealers (any my dealer) have been useless about any software bug and just state, wait for ford. |

Description | This vehicle has an issue with persisent and now completely locked out safety systems. There's a 40 page forum on macheforums. Currently at the dealer 2 weeks with no known fix. They are waiting on parts, but do not guarantee a fix. All of my safety systems have been disabled from this. Adadptive cruise control, which isn't concerning, but - forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warnings, lane keeping assistance. I feel unsafe in this vehicle and ford has no current fix. A serious investigation needs to go into this as I was advised by the ford bev team hotline he had just spoken to someone from california who started a buyback for the same reason, and when the dealer couldn't fix it, to call back and advise it's a lemon. The fact ford themselves suggested this and cannot restore safety systems is beyond scary. Dealer isn't convinced they can fix it and says parts are backordered, meanwhile there's no concise fix. A master tech in the thread has suggested co-axials, while others have had their camera and camera harness replaced. Others like myself are without the loss of a car for weeks while still having to pay for it. Please launch a formal investigation. If it was just adaptive cruise, it wouldn't matter. Normal cruise is knocked out as well as every adas feature, due to a 'front camera' / colission avoidance issue. Another tech in the thread suggested the wiring loom was not long enough causing a harsh bend to the coaxial in the bumper. I just want a safe car back. All features such as lane keeping, even auto-braking are now gone. My dealer is unable to calibrate the camera anymore and suggested ford released this vehicle a bit too early. This is worrying. Thanks |

Description | * on october 16th, 2022, at about 7:00 pm, I was driving my 2021 ford mach-e gt when we began to change lanes (we were in the left lane heading east) as the vehicle in front of us slowed down to make a left-hand turn. There was a car behind us and two vehicles in the right lane (two-lane road in each direction) that were a few car lengths behind us as we began to change into that lane. When I turned on my signal and turned the steering wheel, I pressed the gas pedal to accelerate to get around the car in front of me to keep my distance from the vehicles in the lane I was transitioning into. Unfortunately, when I pressed the gas pedal, we experienced complete vehicle failure. I had no steering, brakes, or acceleration. Within a short time (30-45 minutes), we had no power as the lights on the vehicle, and all electrically powered devices and components were entirely out. This made it very difficult to tow the car as it is all-wheel drive, and we could not put it in neutral to pull the vehicle. As this happened, five cars were in the area, and several had to swerve and fly off the road onto the dirt shoulder. We barely missed the car in front of us, and the car behind us had to lock up its breaks not to hit us. Our car gradually slowed down and cost off the road about 50 yards or so after losing power, as it was very difficult to get the vehicle to steer; it took everything I had to turn the wheel to get it off the road. We put on the emergency blinkers, but the vehicle lights flashed erratically inside and outside the car. We had over a dozen warnings flash on our dashboard about vehicle failure. The speakers in the car were making a thumping sound on their own as the car was flashing headlights, brake lights, and flashers on their own and very sporadically. It was like a disco club in the car as all the lights were flashing on and of at a rapid rate. The other cars stoppe and were very angry at us as the screamed at us that we almost caused an accident. |

Description | Car purchased new june 2021. In april 2022, I began to get intermittent faults regarding the front camera âfront camera fault - service requiredâ - this would disable cruise control on highways and cause quite a lurch and change in speed. The error message disables cruise control, camera, pre-collision assist, and lane keeping assist. The error message would disappear after a few minutes. By memorial day weekend may 2022, the fault was persistent and the error message did not go away. In august 2022, I left the car with my dealer for 3 weeks and they did some software updates and re-seated my windshield to address an open recall. Since then, I have received the front camera intermittent fault three times. There's quite a number of us with this issue and ford has initiated buybacks due to the problem being unresolved. We just want the issue resolved, as it's a safety issue. |

Description | Starting approximately in june 2022, my vehicle receives almost daily faults. It will generate a "front camera fault" and a "pre-collision assist not available" message. When the car generates these faults, the following other features will fail to work: adaptive cruise control, normal cruise control, automatic headlights, lane centering, pre-collision warning. I brought the vehicle into two separate dealers on two separate occasions to address the problems. Both times, parts were replaced, software was updated / reset, and camera systems were re-aligned. None of these efforts have even made the problem any better. The fault will sometimes appear when first starting the vehicle. Description | I repeatedly get two error messages, front camera fault and pre collision assist unavailable. It happened randomly until it finally went out completely. I've spoken to many other owners who are having the same problem and it seems that there is not fix. This causes the cruise control and lane keeping assist to become unavailable. Myself and many other owners have attempted to get this issue resolved multiple times and it seems that there isn't a fix and the manufacturer is not speaking out about it. My car is currently at the repair shop for it's 3rd visit to resolve this same issue. The dealership is unaware of how to resolve it and are waiting for ford to find a resolution. This has been an issue since april and the repairs attempts started when the camera went completely out in may. This is a big safety issue if the care can not pick up the threat of a front collision. With the pre collision assist unavailable it something were to happen while driving, the emergency brake system will not activate. I feel that this issue should be addressed. |

Description | Ford has recently released a software update that causes front camera faults when going over bumpy roads and across multiple conditions. This causes the blue cruise cruise control system to suddenly stop working when driving at highway speeds. When coupled with one pedal driving, this could cause brakes to slam on while driving at highway speeds. Additionally, forward emergency breaking does not work until this fault resets (after ~1-2 minutes typically). This happens constantly when driving and causes safety hazards. |

Nothing changed, car still accelerates or slows down randomly. 2nd problem - occurred at least five times. Car suddenly loosing power while entering the traffic including entering highway. Drivetrain malfunction warning was displayed on dashboard after last lost of power when entering intersection. After latest incident on september 13th car is being repaired at the dealership. |

Description | I had been driving without issue, no warnings from the car. I parked at a gas station to get a snack. When I got back in the car could not be started or driven. It has to be placed on a flatbed and towed to the dealer. The message on start was âstop safely nowâ. My vehicle had safety recall 22s41, which obviously does not fix the issue. |

Description | The rear brake pads have grinned into the rotors causing a rusted ring around the rear rotors. During braking, harsh metal-on-metal noise can be heard in low speed braking applications. Performance-wise, noticeably longer braking distances in low speed braking applications were observed. I have been to the dealership multiple times however, I was told this was ânormal' by chief service managers. Loud braking noise and weakened braking performance should not be observed after fewer than 11k miles and less than a year of ownership. |

Description | My 2021 mustang mach-e gt performance is exhibiting a powertrain failure and stop safely now message in the instrument panel cluster (ipc). It is due to a high voltage battery junction box (hvbjb) failure. Ford needs to replace the hvbjb with an updated part and reprogram the becm, at least. The dealer has no information on the replacement part, and has not associated tsb 21-2178 with the vehicle. |

Description | The hands-free steering control does not give a loud warning or much notice as it shuts off quickly as it did to me as I switched from southbound 805 to southbound 163 in san diego. The hands-free steering veered off of the 163 entrance ramp towards the crash barrels and I was barely able to get control and avoid a crash. About 5 miles further down the road as it was going hands-free on 163 underneath interstate 8 and there is a curve to the left but my vehicle kept going straight and I barely missed other cars in the next lane as the hands-free steering suddenly stopped with no loud notice. Luckily, I was paying very good attention which is hard to do when you're talking to other people in the car and driving hands-free. I had less than two seconds notification to take full control and avoid a wreck. My brother was a passenger as I was taking him to the airport. In the past I have been qualified as a professional racecar driver and I have a masters in mechanical engineering and have much experience with electronics as I produce electric vehicles . I also owned a tesla model three for a couple years and the autonomous driving was scary on it at times. My wife would not let me put it on autonomous as these vehicles are back-and-forth in their lane so much that passengers get scared. I am selling my 2021 mustang mach-e before it kills me. I love the car and the handling and acceleration but after the dealer installed this hands-free, I am scared. The two incidents today and several other minor ones before tells me there's a lot of development still needing to be done before these hands-free and autonomous devices are allowed on even controlled access freeways. |

Description | Have had 2 separate incidents in which while driving down highway, car switched into slow mode, powering down and ultimately coming to a stop. Had to call 911 both times to get to safety; it was very scary. Car is at dealer for 2 weeks as of today. Believe this is a battery problem which has been identified in lots of other vehicles |

Description | My vehicle has 13,000 miles on it and I have been driving it without any problems until august 12, 2022 when I turned the vehicle on and there was "service now" and a "battery service" message. I was aware of this problem because it was posted online and ford has sent me mail about this problem but I thought it could be fixed by an over the air update, which I performed already. So I contacted the nearest dealer to book an appointment to remedy this issue but the next available appointment was on august 31st so it was 2 weeks from then. I decided to give it a shot and drive it and I was able to drive approximately 40 miles before the car shut down as I was turning right on a stoplight on my way to work. The propulsion did not work along with a series of multiple error messages on all systems. I was able to bring the car to the side of the road, in front of a tire service company's parking lot. I tried to start and restart it but to no avail. I called the nearest ford dealership and they accepted my vehicle so I called a towing service to tow my vehicle to them. I decided to step out of the vehicle and inform the establishment about the situation and that I called a towing service already. When I tried to get in, the doors did not work anymore so I was not able to get in. The towing service arrived and told me to put my car to neutral gear so she can pull it up the bed of the tow truck. I said I could not get in and she stated that she might damage the vehicle if she tried to pull it while it is on park. I had no choice but to agree because I cannot get in the vehicle to change the gear. She had me sign a waiver that states that I accept any possible damages that the vehicle might incur during the towing process. She was able to get the vehicle on the tow truck and deliver it to the dealership I mentioned and now they are trying to repair it. I was aware of this issue beforehand but ford stated that this issue can be resolved with a simple software update. |

Description | My vehicle had the nhtsa recall number 22v412 performed 2 weeks ago via an ota update. Today while driving the vehicle I had critical failure while the vehicle was in motion rendering the vehicle unsafe. It was determined that the part which failed was the part addressed in the recall campaign. The recall should not be considered satisfactory remediation of the issue as it did nothing to prevent this safety concern with my vehicle. Software cannot fix an improperly designed piece of hardware. |

Description | The vehicle would not start and display an error message "pull over safely now" which the car was not able to put in any gear. This incident happened 2 times already. The first incident was when I drove the vehicle from oregon to california. As I was about to leave the next morning from the hotel, the vehicle would not turn un and display the message "pull over safely now". We had to call a tow truck to pick up the vehicle and drop it off at a dealership in california for about 30 days. We pick up the vehicle and drove back to oregon and the same issue happen again in less than a week with the same error message "pull over safely now". |

Description | On may 14, 2022, I stopped twice on a 120 mile trip to recharge my mach e at a level 3 dc charger. Upon completing each charge, the ring around the charging port turned red and I received a default message. I plugged my car into my home level 2 charger and the car completely locked down and I was unable to reenter the car. I have since learned that this is the classic sign of a hvbjb failure. The dealerships updated the car's programming but did not replace the hvbjb. The hvbjb subassembly in all ford mach-e vehicles has known defects with 'under-designed' main contactors that are known to fail under normal charging and driving conditions as outlined in current open ford recall notice for my vehicle 22s41. Unfortunately, the internal damage to contactors is not visible externally, and warning notices on display only after damage has occurred, and can result in sudden loss of propulsion power at highway speed, loss of power steering, and power brakes... And failure of other 12v systems due to failure to charge the 12v battery properly after contactors are damaged. Less catastrophic results can include failure to start; which can 'strand' driver's and passengers in remote areas, bad weather conditions, as well as cause loss of use for weeks due to delays in replacement parts and local dealerships needing equipment and training to effect removal/replacement of faulty unit with a new hvbjb having re-designed 'beefier' components.â â my complaint is that ford's recall notice 22s41 is a software-only attempt to prevent future damage, and does not require removal of the part(s) which are known to fail to be replaced with the re-designed components which are available, and have been used to repair failures under warranty. I have no way of inspecting the original equipment to evaluate current condition; and failure can result in sudden and unexpected loss of power, steering, and braking as well as potentially 'stranding me' in unsafe conditions. |
