2020 Chevrolet Impala Problems and Top Complaints – Is Your Car A Lemon?

Steering, acceleration, and lighting issues are causes of complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners

There’s no doubt that the 2020 Chevrolet Impala is an impressive sedan. But it’s not true to say that the Impala “is the perfect vehicle for you.” Too many people have been faced with problems that indicate the imperfections of this supposedly perfect car. Those with bad experiences identify major power steering problems and issues with acceleration, as well as lighting and other problems.

Most Common Problems

Complaints about the 2020 Chevrolet Impala to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) are varied. They relate to several components and systems including exterior lighting, the seats, steering, structure, and the electrical system.

There is also a complaint that an owner from Georgia is puzzled about and consequently filed as an “unknown or other” issue. The problem is that when driving the RPMs decrease, the speed increases, and there is a lag.

“At times you can feel the car slow down when pushing the accelerator and then it slightly jumps forward. The car can be going (at) 75 mph and the RPMs will be between 0 and 1.”

Electrical and Lighting Problems

There is potentially a myriad of problems that can be caused by faulty electrical issues, including lighting issues. And sometimes other problems lead to electrical issues!

The owner of a 2020 Chevrolet describes how the air conditioner in the car “was off inside the vehicle and caused massive leaking in the carpets.” This caused excessive mold to grow under the floor mats, in the carpets, and under the seats. Pretty much everywhere. This, in turn, led to electrical issues. Despite “a senior member at GM” investigating the issue for months, the complaint states that “nothing is being done.” It also says that the local dealership hasn’t done anything either.

“My family is now having respiratory issues due to the mold issue.”

Then there’s the owner from Ohio who rented a 2020 Chevrolet Impala and had major problems with the vehicle lights. In a nutshell, “the headlamps failed to produce adequate lighting while driving, (and) there were no warning lights illuminated.”

Problems with Steering

Accurate steering is vital to any vehicle. Without it, you won’t have control of the vehicle. It’s that simple. So, when the owner of a 2020 Impala from Illinois couldn’t reverse out of the driveway without “excessive force,” alarm bells started ringing.

According to the NHTSA complaint, the “Power Steering – Drive with Care” message had appeared on the instrument panel. Luckily, when the owner restarted the vehicle two hours later, it had “resumed normal operation.”

When the complaint was filed, neither the dealer or the manufacturer had been notified about the failure, and no repairs had been attempted.

Powertrain Problems

There are complaints on other platforms too, including Edmunds. Someone who rented a 2020 Chevrolet Impala Premium 4-door sedan wasn’t happy with anything other than the “beautiful” outside and “nice” leather inside… “that’s where my praise ends.”

The complaint goes on to say that the “infotainment system and in-dash display are beyond dated. They look like something you’d pick up at best buy and install yourself. The headrest is a rock, like you’d get a concussion if you got rear-ended. There are no standard driver assists besides (a) blind spot warning. This is necessary because visibility anywhere but directly ahead is limited. However I found it to be unreliable at the best of times. The car is quick, but the transmission on the car I drove was sluggish. There was a lot of hang time between gears, and I never found a way to accelerate that was smooth. The brakes would get rock hard if the car sat for anything more than 3 hours, likely a bad check valve. These issues should not appear on a car with 23k miles.”
