The automaker states that the 2023 BMW X1 incorporates all “the latest safety and technology features and an unwavering eagerness for exploration and adventure.” But owners are hugely concerned about airbag defects. After all, as BMW warns, if airbags don’t deploy as intended during a crash, there is an increased risk of injury to those traveling in the luxury SUV. That’s not the kind of adventure owners are seeking!

Most Common Problems
The most common problems linked to the 2023 BMW X1 are related to safety. There aren’t a lot of complaints, but they all concern airbags. And there are 2 recalls, one for airbags and the other for seatbelts.
As required by law, all communications from the manufacturer to dealerships must be shared with the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA). But none of the documents reflected on the NHTSA website have anything to do with airbags or seat belts. Rather, they have issues that relate to the electrical system, exterior lighting, the structure of the vehicle, and visibility relating to “climate control” inside the X1.

Launched in the fourth quarter of 2022, the 2023 BMW X1 was the subject of its first recall in mid-February 2023. Along with 2022 BMW X1 models and 2022-2023 BMW iX models, 2023 BMW X1 models have drivers’ airbags that may not deploy as intended. The second recall, issued in mid-April 2023, focuses on second-row seat belts that may malfunction.
By mid-May 2023, there hadn’t been any complaints from consumers who had experienced these malfunctions.

Incorrectly Manufactured Airbags
NHTSA Campaign Number 23V079000 states that as many as 15,803 BMW vehicles may be affected by the recall. These include X1 xDrive28i vehicles. The problem is that the front driver’s airbag may have been manufactured incorrectly. As a result, it may not deploy as intended if the BMW crashes, increasing the risk of injury.
Owners were notified by mail during April 2023, and told that dealers would replace the affected airbag free of charge.
Improperly Installed Seat Belts
NHTSA Campaign Number 23V260000 affects 1,465 BMW X1 xDrive28i and M35i small-sized SUVs. The concern is that the second-row seat belts may malfunction due to an installation error. The recall warns that the seat belts on the second-row outboard seats may have been “pinched by an interior trim panel during vehicle assembly.”
Owner notification letters were scheduled to be mailed on June 2, 2023, telling them that dealers will inspect and adjust the interior trim panel as necessary.
Complaints
By mid-May 2023, all the complaints received by the NHTSA related to airbags. Additionally, they all stated that they had received the recall but had been told that the parts needed for the repair were not yet available.
A complaint filed in March 2023 also experienced a Driver Restraint System Malfunction warning light in an X1 with only 2,000 miles on the clock. A local dealer confirmed that apart from the driver’s airbag, another airbag also needed to be replaced. The owner wasn’t told which airbag this was, only that neither of them was available for them to undertake the repair.
What Should You Do If Your 2023 BMW X1 is a Lemon?
Just because your 2023 BMW X1 airbags malfunction doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a lemon. But if the dealership remains unable to do the recall repair, or you have recurring issues with serious implications, it might be. They don’t need to be about airbags or seat belts.
