Complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Reddit tell a story about faulty transmissions. A growing number of 2024 Toyota Tacoma owners are experiencing significant transmission issues. Reports describe difficulty shifting gears, inconsistent performance, and even complete transmission failure. Many owners have taken their vehicles to dealerships only to be informed that there are no available replacement parts, leaving them stranded and frustrated.

Owner Experiences
Typical problems from Toyota Tacoma owners relate to the transmission failing to do what it is supposedly designed to do. In numerous cases, dealerships confirm that the transmission should be replaced, but the part needed to do this (the transmission) isn’t available. This indicates the likelihood that the problem is widespread and common.
What makes the problem much worse is that it often affects brand-new Tacoma pickup trucks.
An owner from New York tells how a two-week-old 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road automatic with 2,700 miles needed to have the transmission replaced in mid-June 2024. “Toyota tech said that there are no spare transmissions in the U.S. and that it could take 3 months or longer to replace. Toyota tech found metal shavings in transmission fluid.”
Similarly, an owner from Oklahoma with a month-old 2024 Tacoma with only 1,245 miles shared this story. “I was leaving a parking lot and pulled out on the road and the vehicle shifted in neutral. After a minute or so the vehicle then slammed back into gear. It did this 2 or 3 times. I pulled into a gas station, turned the vehicle off, and waited a few minutes. I turned the vehicle back on, backed out, and proceeded to drive when the same issue happened again. But now the vehicle would not shift into other gears.” At this point numerous warning lights illuminated. “I was only about a mile or 2 from a Toyota dealership and was able to limp the truck to the dealership.” He also needed a new transmission.
Complaints Summary
Complaints are so similar that it’s impossible not to realize that owners share the same basic problem. Quite simply, the transmissions of their 2024 Toyota Tacomas are faulty. For example, an owner from Florida states that his vehicle had only 209 miles “and the transmission is out (and it’s) not driveable.”
An owner from Arizona describes rough shifting from reverse to drive. This was followed straight away by the inability to access gears 1-5. “The transmission was within normal operating temperatures per the onboard temp readings. Going into park or neutral did not fix the issue. Stopping and restarting the engine allowed access to lower gears briefly, but once the vehicle shifted up, it could no longer access the lower gears. Shortly after this, the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle went into limp mode.”
An owner from New York also tells how the transmission failed to function as intended. The transmission only shifted into 1st and 2nd gear. No surprise! “The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with transmission failure.” However, the parts needed to complete the repair were on backorder.
There is also a complaint from an owner from Virginia that states a 2024 Tacoma stalled while driving at 10 mph when the driver pressed the accelerator pedal. This Tacoma was also diagnosed with a failed transmission! The owner opened two cases, “a case for the vehicle replacement and another case for the distribution of parts to the dealer.” The mileage here was only about 989!
Online Discussion
There are several threads on Reddit that echo exactly what the complaints on the NHTSA website are saying. For example, in a post from June 2024, an owner warns that 2024 Toyota Tacoma transmissions are failing. But, he says, nobody knows numbers and states that replacement transmissions are not available. “Is this going to end up being another Toyota Recall or will it just be a handful of issues?”
Comments on a different Reddit thread relate how a member’s father bought the 2024 Tacoma TRD sport 4X4 (manual transmission) in mid-May 2024. It looks like this transmission also failed. It states that “Yesterday gears 2 and 6 were not engaging. The truck is dangerous to drive.” The owner went to the dealership and promised to send someone to pick up the car. While there is no feedback on what happened, the post states: “My dad is hoping to apply lemon law on the car since he doesn’t trust it.”
