Is Credit First National Association Calling You from 401-445-1786?

If you’ve been receiving calls from 401-445-1786, the caller may be Credit First National Association (CFNA). CFNA provides financing and private-label credit cards for many automotive retailers and service providers.

Because CFNA may be collecting its own debt, it may not always fall under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) the same way third-party collectors do. However, state laws still protect consumers from harassment, excessive calls, and deceptive collection practices.

Know Your Rights – State-Specific Protections

Many states have additional consumer protections that apply to collection calls:

California: Deceptive or abusive calls are prohibited, and contact is generally limited to 8 a.m.–9 p.m. Third-party contact is restricted.

Connecticut: Creditors cannot pretend to be government officials, accuse consumers of crimes, or use calls to harass or annoy.

Florida: Prohibits misleading statements, excessive calls that amount to harassment, and workplace calls if the employer does not allow them.

Maryland: The Maryland Consumer Debt Collection Act bans threatening or deceptive collection tactics and allows consumers to seek damages.

Massachusetts: Limits collection calls to two calls within a seven-day period to a personal number.

Michigan: Calls cannot occur before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. and must stop at work if the consumer objects.

Missouri: The Missouri Merchandising Practices Act prohibits deceptive or unfair conduct related to credit or debt collection.

North Carolina: The North Carolina Debt Collection Act prohibits harassment, threats, and deceptive practices by creditors and collectors.

Pennsylvania: The Fair Credit Extension Uniformity Act restricts repeated calls and deceptive collection tactics.

Texas: Calls are limited to 8 a.m.–9 p.m., and collectors generally cannot contact consumers at work if the employer prohibits it.
