2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Problems and Top Complaints – Is Your Car A Lemon?

Electrical problems and issues with the brakes are among the main cause of complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners

The ID.4 is Volkswagen’s first fully-electric crossover SUV. Launched as a 2021 intelligent design (ID) model in 2020, it’s intended for the mass market and, as such, it’s relatively affordable. But it’s certainly not perfect. The first two models were plagued with software and electrical problems. Similar issues are at the top of 2023 NHTSA complaints. Owners are reporting that doors randomly open or lock, brakes decelerate but don’t stop, and batteries fail.

Most Common Problems with the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4

Launched in late 2022, the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 has a variety of problems relating to 10 components and systems. Of the 9 complaints lodged with the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) between November 22, 2022, and January 25, 2023, more than half cite electrical system issues. The other components and systems named as having problems are the brakes, engine, exterior lighting, forward collision avoidance, powertrain, seats, steering, structure, and vehicle speed control.

Doors and windows are the subject of several complaints. For example, doors open randomly even when locked, and mysteriously lock and then won’t open. Windows also malfunction. Other complaints relate to brakes that enable drivers to decelerate but not stop.

One complaint tells how the electric SUV accelerated for no reason and crashed into the wall of a parking garage. The driver was badly bruised, but the passenger, her husband, wasn’t injured.

Another crash was reportedly caused by a short circuit that may be related to a current recall that has no remedy. This is one of three recalls, all of which affect safety and increase the risk of a crash. It is an urgent safety recall because it also increases the risk of a vehicle fire. It states that the 12-volt battery cable may come into contact with the steering column shaft and cause the insulation to wear. This might result in a short circuit. There is no indication of how long it would take for the insulation to wear, but the recalled vehicles hadn’t been on the road for more than a few months, if at all.

The other two recalls relate to the rearview camera display blanking out and an electric motor sealing ring that is incorrectly assembled.

Electrical System Problems

Five complaints are listed as being electrical system issues. They include problems with the battery, doors and windows, and issues involving heating, lighting, digital displays, and the infotainment system.

An owner from Utah describes in detail what happened after sending a remote command via the myVW app to heat the cabin of the SUV. While the car heated up, the information displays didn’t work, and nor did the speedometer. He solved the problem by following instructions he had read from forum users who had experienced the same malfunction.

Electrical Issues that Affect the Battery

The battery is the heart of an electric vehicle. If it doesn’t work, you may just as well have bought yourself a regular combustion engine car or a bicycle. So, when a new Volkswagen ID.4 owner from California got a warning the day after taking delivery of the SUV, there was considerable cause for alarm.

The SUV had only 20 miles on the clock and the owner decided to drive it for about 80 miles to ensure the 12-volt battery was charged. The next day, the vehicle was “inoperable and immobilized.” The battery had failed and the accessory voltage had dropped to 8 volts. The power steering stopped working, the headlights weren’t working, and it wasn’t possible to put the vehicle in neutral.

The tow truck operator got it moving again and persuaded the new owner to drive instead of getting towed. Although the battery was put on charge again, the next day it “was again completely inoperable and it was now blocking my garage where it was difficult to access. I continued to charge the 12V battery for another full day.” That seemed to work, but there were “a plethora of warnings including one that states that 12V battery supply is limited and the vehicle needs to be driven with care.”

At this stage, the owner scheduled an appointment with a Volkswagen dealer for the following day. It’s not clear what the outcome was. But the complaint states that “the manufacturer should have taken precautions so that the battery cannot fail in such a rapid and unpredictable fashion. There needs to be a way to put the vehicle in neutral in emergency situations such as this one.”

Problems with Doors and Windows

There is one window problem reported as an electrical system issue, that states the malfunction caused injury, but doesn’t provide details. The complaint is that when they pull the lever to close the window, it opens. It explains that there are two position controls for the windows. The first makes it go up and down. The other one-touch open/close control mechanism opens or closes the window all the way. The problem is that when they use the first control position with the window half open, pulling the lever up results in the window going down.

“This has put the safety of my child at risk as we had a large animal charging towards the vehicle and when I went to close the window, instead of closing, it opened the window fully.” While the dealer was able to replicate the problem, they said they couldn’t help because an error code wasn’t generated.

An owner from Massachusetts closed and locked the doors before driving. But, while traveling at 70 mph down the highway, the “electric controlled driver’s side door unlatched and opened.”

An owner from New York was stopped at a red light when the passenger door opened twice, “unprompted.” After trying to lock the door via the driver panel, “the same door opened again by itself. This is a major safety risk to have the doors open by themselves while driving.”

While some complaints only mention door or window problems, others report other problems as well. For example, an owner from California crashed while on the way to get his door problems sorted out (see Brake and Deceleration Problems below) at a dealership. It all started when the driver’s door wouldn’t open. The dealer told him it was caused by “some sort of short circuit,” but didn’t explain.

Brake and Deceleration Problems

The California owner mentioned above describes what happened when he crashed.

After doing a bit of research, he assumed the dealer’s mention of a short circuit issue had something to do with the 12-volt battery cable recall. However, nobody mentioned that it might not be safe to drive the SUV. On the way to the dealer to get the door fixed, someone in front stopped suddenly to avoid hitting a dog. “I saw it, hit the brakes all the way down to the floor. ID.4 decelerated but did not stop and I braced for impact. I rammed into the car in front of me. I left (the) car at the dealership, I have yet to hear back if it was (a) vehicle malfunction.”

An owner from Florida describes how the ID.4 began shuddering and vibrating when she depressed the brake pedal. She was approaching a traffic light at about 40 mph and needed to stop. The brake failure warning light illuminated, and the SUV began decelerating. Fortunately, she was able to pull over and park on the side of the road. This was the third time she had experienced this failure. Previously, the SUV wasn’t drivable and had to be towed. The third time she was able to continue driving after stopping for about an hour and a half. The vehicle had only about 393 miles on the clock and, while the manufacturer was informed of the failure, it hadn’t been repaired.

What to do if your 2023 VW ID.4 is a lemon? Your Lemon Rights

If you own a 2023 VW ID.4 and have concerns that you might have bought a lemon, you can do something about it. Every year automakers like Volkswagen buy back, replace, or pay cash settlements to thousands of ‘lemon’ owners. Additionally, the law makes Volkswagen pay the legal fees for lemon-related legal fees.

On saturday, february 4, 2023. At approximately 7am. I entered the vehicle to warm the car. (it was a cold day). I tried to exit the vehicle, but I could not exit the driver's side door. It was not opening. I tried many times via the door handle and the key fob. Neither worked. I then tried the passenger side door and that would not work as well. I tried each door several times. It looked like the car's electrical or software system was not communicating my needs to the vehicle. I finally was able to roll down the driver's side window and opened the dirver's side door via grabbing the door handle from the outside. Not too sure why neither door would open to let me exit the vehicle. It was pretty scary, thinking I would not be able to exit. Not too sure what happened, but hopefully it does not happen again. So far, it has not.

On saturday, december 24th, I was leaving to go to the gym with my wife. I pulled left out of the driveway and we heard a loud screeching type noise, very high-pitched. Many lights came on in the vehicle at that point. Too numerous to document actually which ones. We also smelled burnt smoke and there was actually some smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. I turned the car around which was difficult so I could get the car off the main road and back into the driveway where it was safe. Upon parking the vehicle I could see the rear, driver's side tire was damaged. The tire was not rotating and was locked there was about 20 feet of rubber marks coming out of the driveway into the street and back to the driveway. I called vw immediately and it was brought into service. See attached service report. Looks like the brakes were installed incorrectly at the factory. Imagine driving a car where the brakes lock on you and the tires do not move. Extremely scary. This incident could of been a lot worse. The electric battery could of seized and caused a fire.

Driver's door is malfunctioning: randomly popped open while at a stoplight without being touched. Won't open from the outside via the handle. Central locking function of the car is not working properly (doors don't lock while at speed like they normally do). The car is now at dealership waiting for repair; am told the necessary replacement door handle part is on a nationwide backorder with vw with no estimate given for arrival and completed repair.

Reading through several 'blogs' on this vehicle, I was able to determine how to 'reboot' the screens and restore proper operation to the 'speedometer' this vehicle is a 2023 volkswagen id. 4, all wheel drive pro-s model with 2814 miles on it. The date was march 16th, 2023, 7:00 am, clear skies, 62 degrees. This is a battery electric vehicle.

The car shut down while driving. Many system warnings appeared sequentially stating that they were no longer functioning. The first to appear and remain as a warning light is the electrical system malfunction. It is currently orange, however, it turned red at one point. My car was unable to go into drive, nor reverse. I had my car serviced just over a month ago for a similar issue - power stopped being delivered to the wheels.

Our forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic warning systems stopped working on our 2023 id. 4 with 2500 miles on it about 2 weeks ago. Took it to the dealership on 3/3/23 for repairs, after 4 hours the tech came out and was clueless what to what was causing the issue. They requested I leave the vehicle there the rest of the day so a tech from a different location could remote into the vehicle. After another 4-5 hours I was informed they "thought" one of the control modules was defective and needed to be replaced. They say this part has no eta and would likely take anywhere from several weeks to many months to come in. Vw does not consider any of these items a "safety issue" and refused to provide a loaner until parts became available.

Second day after purchasing the new car, while driving the front passenger door just swung open. I thought it was not closed properly, but it kept happening again! I took it to the dealer and was informed that they are seeing multiple cars with the same issue. It is a huge safety issue and it seems that these electronic door handles cannot handle cold and keep malfunctioning. The car is at the dealer right now and vw does not have the parts to fix it or is afraid to address the issue. It's a new car, I drove it for a few days and it has been sitting at the dealer for two months without any resolution in sight! Please address the safety issue and ask vw to ensure it does not happen to others. On facebook group, multiple people are affected. My dealer, romeo of kingston ny has multiple cars with electronic door handle issues.

On long drives (1+ hour or more) my 2023 vw id. 4 pro s (all electric) displays a "limited driving power" warning at random times, and the speed drops by half or more. This has happened on all long drives (5 separate days) and the car has been serviced by the dealer three times and they cannot find a solution. This is a significant safety risk as it often happens on the highway and I could get rear-ended if I cannot pull off the road in time.

Upon entering the vehicle it is displayed that there is a 12v error and that the electrical system is malfunctioning. The vehicle cannot be put into gear. Exiting the vehicle and reentering the vehicle clears the error most of the time, making it seem like this error is false. One time though this error lasted for more than 30 minutes than went away. I drove the vehicle to the dealer and they confirmed the problem exists and do not know what is causing it. If this is a real error with the electrical drive train than exiting the vehicle should not clear it.

When I'm reverse, if your body slightly lifts off seat, car comes to a screeching hault. Making it impossible to backup without solely relying on review camera. The car spontaneously came to a stop in the middle of the road and would not start again. The displayed showed plenty of battery charge/miles of range left, meaning the issue was not a dead battery. There were several error messages, notably one indicating that the car could not be put into drive because it was still connected to a charging cable. Being that the car was in the middle of the road, the car was not connected to a charger. I was unable to put the car into neutral in order to move it to the side of the road and out from the middle of traffic because the car kept indicating that it could not move with a charging cable still attached. The safety of myself and others was put at risk because my car spontaneously stopped in the middle of the road with no warning. My safety was further put at risk because the issue prevented me from putting the car into neutral in order to move it to safety.

I am having the (seemingly common) problem of a malfunctioning driver's door handle/latch. The safety issues are: a) the door will sometimes pop itself open while driving - it happened to me while making a right turn and I had to grab the open door with my hand; b) on one occasion I was unable to open the driver door from inside the vehicle, and had to climb out the passenger side; c) I also consider it a safety issue that I cannot lock the car to protect who/what is inside. The car starting having this issue around 1,000 miles, and is currently at the dealer waiting for a backordered part. I wanted to report this because, anecdotally, there are many others with the issue who are also waiting for a fix, and I don't think vwoa has the organizational ability to fix them voluntarily, nor enough qualified ev technicians.

At about 11 pm on january 24 I sent a remote command to my vehicle to heat the cabin through the myvw app. The app reported a success like it has many times. When I opened it and sat in the driver's seat, the two information displays neither displayed anything nor lit up at all. The car appeared to have heated up as expected and was otherwise operational, I. E. I was able to put it in gear, move, and steer as expected. This was tested at low speed and for a short distance since one of the inoperative digital displays, the id. Cockpit, also provides critical information for driving. This includes the speedometer, remaining range, and the other various functions normally present in the instrument panel. The issue was not resolved by me briefly leaving the vehicle (a tip suggested by many on forums online dedicated to the vehicle), but was after I forced the entertainment system to restart by holding down on the capacitive power button below the main infotainment screen. This was another suggestion I had often seen online. While the fix is simple, the problem is enormous. A less experienced user who hadn't spent hours trawling forums about their car would likely not have known the solution. They would face a decision: abandoning whatever present need they had for the vehicle, or be forced to drive without information like speed and remaining range if driving could not be avoided. P. S. Please let me upload a video on this form. I had to take screenshots of the video I took. Two screenshots show the vehicle in d/drive with the screens blank. The not-screenshots show the infotainment in two states: not working after I briefly left and re-entered the vehicle, and rebooting after I pressed and held the power keys. The previews on here show that they're upside down… if so, I don't know why.

The window on the id. 4 failed to operate as directed. When pulling the lever up to close the window, the window will open rather than close. The vehicle's window lever has two positions, first position controls the window and will cause it to go up/down. Second extended position is one-touch open/close and will open/close the window all the way. Using the first position control with the window 1/2 way open, pulling the lever up using the first position control will result in the window going down. This has put the safety of my child at risk as we had a large animal charging towards the vehicle and when I went to close the window, instead of closing, it opened the window fully. The issue was brought to attention of dealer and replicated in their presence. However, they blamed that because the operation did not generate an error code in the car's computer, there was nothing they can do according to their sop. There are no error or warning messages relating to this operation but it can be replicated and video of error exists.

On december 29, 2022, I took delivery of a brand new 2023 id. 4 pro s awd with 20 miles on the odometer. The vehicle was showing a 12v battery warning the following day. I drove it for about 80 miles that day to ensure that the 12v battery is charged in case it was not properly looked after during transport and at the dealer. The next day, the vehicle was inoperable and immobilized. The 12v battery has failed and the accessory voltage dropped to 8v. Power steering stopped working, headlights were not working and it was not possible to put the vehicle in neutral. I called a tow truck via the volkswagen roadside assistance. In preparation for the tow the operator attempted to boost the 12v battery from a portable jump starter. This was necessary to put the vehicle in neutral so that it can be moved. While doing that the vehicle became fully operable again and the operator encouraged me to drive the vehicle myself instead of getting it towed. I agreed and drove it to my garage where I put the 12v battery on a tender / battery charger. The following day the vehicle was again completely inoperable and it was now blocking my garage where is was difficult to access. I continued to charge the 12v battery for another full day. Now the vehicle turns on again and can be driven. However, there is a plethora of warnings including one that states that 12v battery supply is limited and the vehicle needs to be driven with care. I scheduled an appointment with a volkswagen dealer for the following day. In summary, I took delivery of a brand new vehicle that almost immediately became inoperable. Given that it's very difficult to impossible to get the vehicle on a tow truck without the 12v accessory voltage powering its electronics the manufacturer should have taken precautions so that the battery cannot fail in such rapid and unpredictable fashion. There needs to be a way to put the vehicle in neutral in emergency situations such as this one.

Description
While in reverse if you turn to look back through the window instead of relying on the back-up camera, the car will turn off because there is a sensor on the seat that turns the car off if weight is not distributed correctly. The camera is not always reliable especially in situations with a lot of traffic or tricking maneuvering situations. I have had the car turn off on me at least five times, three of which was when I was in a busy parking lot. If the camera were to fail and I needed to solely rely on looking out the window, having the car turn off, creates a huge safety concern.
