Faulty brakes, electrical system, and windshield cracking issues are among the top complaints received by the NHTSA from vehicle owners
The 2022 Nissan Altima is a sedan that provides plenty of features without breaking the bank. The automaker claims it provides “driving excitement to a whole new level.” But drivers who have experienced serious problems with their sedans aren’t so sure. Complaints range from automatic emergency brake failure to an electrical short that caused a fire.

There aren’t a lot of complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about the 2022 Nissan Altima. But consumers who have bothered to complain aren’t happy. Components and systems they have identified in complaints from July 18, 2022, to January 22, 2023, are the electrical system, engine, forward collision avoidance, brakes, and windshields that crack without impact.
Forward collision avoidance issues are listed 3 times and engine problems twice. The others are only listed once each. But as is usual, complaints are commonly listed under more than one category. For example, the electrical system problem is also listed as being a forward collision avoidance issue. Both brake issues are also seen as engine and forward collision avoidance problems.

If your brakes don’t work, you won’t be able to stop on the road. That could signal disaster! But, if you have an automatic emergency brake system, you’ll probably figure that will still keep you safe. But it may not. Two 2022 Nissan Altima owners complained to the NHTSA in October and November 2022 that their automatic emergency brakes were malfunctioning.
An owner from Virginia describes how the automatic emergency brakes stopped the Altima 4 times, twice on the highway. “I was extremely blessed that I wasn’t hit by other vehicles.”
Additionally, the complaint states that the car doesn’t always go into gear. It flashes D for drive on the instrument panel, but the car won’t move when the driver presses the gas pedal.
Another 2022 Nissan Altima owner says that the automatic emergency brake stopped the car 6 times on the highway. “I was scared to death.” Additionally, the transmission won’t go into drive all of the time. “This vehicle is dangerous.” The complaint states that the Altima has been in for repairs 3 times and has been out of service for more than 30 days.
“I have been in touch with 2 Nissan representatives since the beginning. Other Nissan vehicles have had emergency brake issues before. I really am praying maybe it’s just my vehicle that is affected. These things do happen. I have asked Nissan to buy the car back. Praying they will. I cannot drive a death trap.”

An owner from Texas had a horrible experience when his 2022 Nissan Altima caught on fire.
There was a warning indicator, though exactly what it was is not quoted in the complaint. But the owner states that he called Nissan and said there was an electrical short that sparked and resulted in smoke coming out of the air vents. He got zero response, so had to act quickly to put out the fire.
The complaint states he told them “something was wrong with my car,” and that he asked why it was smoking and had caught on fire. But, with no response, “I just put it out myself.” He also admits that this was essentially “to get my vehicle replacement under my manufacturing warranty.” There is no indication of whether or not he was successful in his endeavor.
A huge number of vehicles worldwide have issues with cracking windshields. The 2022 Nissan Altima is no exception.
Four months after buying a new 2022 Altima, a nurse from Arizona “noticed a unique crack in my windshield which had not been there previously. Nothing had damaged or hit it as I had not driven my car in over a day or so.”
It didn’t take long for the crack to spread. “Within a week or so my windshield became so severely cracked, it was unsafe to drive due to limited visibility.” The owner was advised by the dealer that they didn’t handle windshield repairs. With a $500 deductible amount from the insurance company, the owner realized it was cheaper to pay out of pocket to replace it. There wasn’t an option “because of the inability to see clearly and lack of visibility, which was a safety issue.”

My Altima has a popping in the right front almost right out of the gate, pair this with the glazing that happens in the transmission and the problem with breaking where when apply the breaks to come to a stop behind another car, the vehicle will down shift and the car takes off as if it is out of control for a split second and then the car decides to return to breaking. As well as the safety system which creates a huge safety issue, when in cruise control and have the sensor on the car will fight you if you are trying to avoid something in the road that could be hazardous. Not only do I now own a Nissan altima bright red lemon I am seriously regretting my first new car purchase not to mention as soon as I got the car home and tried to contact the dealership they have been ghosting me. Think they know what they sold me? I’m going to say an absolute of course they do!!!
