Blue Shield Members May Have Had Private Health Records Exposed
Lemberg Law is investigating the Blue Shield of California data breach, which may have compromised the privacy of sensitive medical records. If you received a notice from Blue Shield, your protected health information could have been improperly accessed.
What Happened?
On November 8, 2024, Blue Shield of California identified a data sharing error within its Member Health Record system. According to the company, a mismatch in health records allowed family members on the same insurance plan to potentially view one another’s private medical information through the Blue Shield Member Portal.
The issue stemmed from a data feed sent to a health information exchange that grouped multiple family members under a single subscriber ID. Blue Shield states that it cannot confirm whether any information was viewed but issued notifications out of an abundance of caution.
What Leaked?
The records potentially visible to others on the same plan included:
- Medical visit types
- Dates of service
- Provider and pharmacy names
- Treating facility information
- Medication details
Importantly, the exposed records did not include names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, or financial account details.
