Credit Acceptance Corporation or CAC is a subprime auto lending company, which receives a lot of consumer complaints to our law firm for debt harassment. Find out who they are, why they might be calling, and how you can stop them.

What is Credit Acceptance Corporation – CAC?

Credit Acceptance Corporation or CAC is a publicly-traded, third-party auto loan agency based in Michigan. CAC has received consumer complaints alleging violations such as improper communication, credit reporting, and collection tactics. If you have been contacted by Credit Acceptance Corporation, make sure you understand your rights before taking action.

According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), Credit Acceptance Corporation was founded and incorporated in 1972 in Michigan. The BBB established its profile page in 1990. It lists Credit Acceptance Corporation as a consumer finance and credit services company.

According to its website, Credit Acceptance Corporation offers “automobile dealers financing programs to help them sell vehicles to consumers, regardless of their credit history. These programs are offered through a nationwide network of automobile dealers who benefit from sales of vehicles to consumers who otherwise could not obtain financing; from repeat and referral sales; and from sales to customers who come into the dealership believing they have credit issues, but qualify for traditional financing.”CAC “enrolled dealers share in the cash flows from the contract, which creates an alignment of interests and is a critical element of CAC’s success.” For car buyers, CAC’s “program is specifically designed to help credit-challenged car buyers” and CAC “reports to the three national credit reporting agencies, giving consumers an opportunity to improve their credit score and potentially qualify for more traditional financing.”

Credit Acceptance Corporation website provides information for car dealers and information for car buyers. Their dealer pages inform site visitors that CAC “is a leader in the subprime finance industry, helping dealers sell more cars and make more money.” Credit Acceptance Corporation offers its programs to independent, Buy Here Pay Here, and franchised dealers in all 50 states. CAC enrolled dealers benefit from “used and new car sales to consumers who otherwise could not get auto financing or a loan approval due to bad credit or no credit” and “repeat and referral sales generated by these same buyers.” The Dealer FAQ page indicates that enrolled dealers have access to CAC’s “proprietary Credit Approval Processing System”, which gives dealers “the opportunity to offer an approval to every customer they submit in 30 seconds or less, on every used car on their lot (and many new cars as well)…” More information is available by calling Credit Acceptance Corporation or submitting an online inquiry form.

The car buyer pages inform site visitors that CAC “believes everyone deserves a second chance” and “empowers car dealers nationally to help people with bad credit or no credit buy a new or used car.” CAC provides information about credit scores, a credit Q&A, which informs site visitors that if they finance through CAC, they “have the opportunity to improve their credit scores through on-time payments” to CAC, and a tool to input information and obtain “credit acceptance” information related to three enrolled dealers. The car buyers FAQ page answers questions about contacting CAC, payments, payoffs, loans, and refinancing.

The Credit Acceptance Corporation website does not provide a lot of detailed information about its business practices or compliance policies. It does include certain financial and business information and public filings in a section geared towards “investors” and standard, legally mandated information about information privacy and security.

How many complaints are there against Credit Acceptance Corporation – CAC?

The BBB has closed 612 complaints against Credit Acceptance Corporation in the past three years, with 252 closed in the past 12 months. Most of those complaints allege problems with billing, collections, and customer service. Since April 2012, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has received 754 complaints about CAC. Justia lists more than 250 federal civil lawsuits involving Credit Acceptance Corporation.

Can you help me file a No Fee Lawsuit against Credit Acceptance Corporation – CAC?

Absolutely. Here are some Sample Cases against Credit Acceptance Corporation

According to the BBB, in August 2016, Credit Acceptance Corporation agreed to settle a government action by the Kansas Attorney General, and Kansas District Attorneys from Sedgwick County and Johnson County by which CAC agreed “to issue credit to approximately 2,100 consumers who used the financing company in the purchase of a vehicle” as part of a settlement with the Kansas prosecutors who “accused the company of improperly disclaiming warranties” in violation of the Kansas Consumer Protection Act.

The BBB has received complaints against Credit Acceptance Corporation alleging problems with billing, collections, customer service and improper credit reporting. The details of many of the complaints are not available on the BBB website, but the complaints that are detailed on the BBB profile page and on the CFPB website include complaints about improper late fees and application of payments, incorrect credit reporting, “harassing” and “rude” communications, “unprofessional” and unfair business tactics, and the consumers’ inability to obtain information or resolve loan payment issues even after contacting CAC. The 59 negative reviews on CAC’s BBB profile support these allegations.

In June 2017, a consumer alleged in a complaint to the CFPB that he received a registered letter from CAC stating that his loan was in default. According to the complainant, CAC automatically withdrew his loan payments and his loan was not in default. He contacted Credit Acceptance Corporation, and the CAC representative admitted that the loan was not in default and told the complainant that he had received the letter solely because of the state and area he lived in, which the complainant indicated constituted “discrimination at its finest” and that it “falls under harassment…” When the complainant asked the company to write him a letter of apology, the Credit Acceptance Corporation representative told him the company does not do that.

In May 2016, a BBB complaint indicated that the customer service she received from Credit Acceptance Corporation had been “so bad” and “no help at all” and that she has been unable to get accurate information about her loan status despite repeated requests. The complainant alleged that she was current on her auto loan through CAC other than missing one payment when her pay date changed at work, which she later made up. According to the complainant, Credit Acceptance Corporation nevertheless repossessed her car in 2016 based on a missed payment in June 2014 on the same day it took a car payment from her. After retrieving her car and paying what she believed was owed, the complainant received a call from CAC telling her she owed more money. The complainant spoke with a supervisor in a recorded call, during which the supervisor confirmed that the complainant would be up to date on her loan by making a specific payment. The complainant alleged that she made the specific payment, but “a couple weeks later” began receiving collection calls. The complainant indicated that she had been paying and not dodging and CAC was still treating her like a deadbeat” and that Credit Acceptance Corporation could not explain how the complainant owed more money. In addition, Credit Acceptance Corporation approved and set up her payment schedule, but then claimed she was late on payments for making them on schedule. The complainant indicated that she felt she was “getting nowhere” with Credit Acceptance Corporation”, that she had “reached out to Colorado legal services”, and that she was “so nervous to walk outside and” find her car to “be gone”, leaving her with “no way to get to work.”

Credit Acceptance Corporation CAC Calling You?

Understanding Your Debt Collection Rights

Consumers are protected from abusive debt collectors from the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). By way of instance, the debt collector must identify himself or herself, who they’re working for, and what debt they’re collecting. The FDCPA claims that debt collectors can’t use any deceptive or misleading representation, like implying the debt is secured by the USA or any particular state. Additionally, they can’t use a badge or uniform to pretend they’re a government employee collecting a debt. Misrepresentation is a violation of the FDCPA and could be reported as such.

In case you’ve been a victim of a debt collector’s wrongdoing, then you can search for justice under the FDCPA. You have the right to pursue a claim against the debt collector; if you prevail, you can collect up to $1,000, plus attorney fees and court costs.

My first time buying a car and I believe everything the used car salesmen tells me. That this is a great car, no issues, rides smooth, and that if anything did mess up or I had a breakdown in my car, all I would have to do is pay a $250 deductible and take it to any GM certified mechanic and it would get fixed. No hassles. I should have known it wasn’t true when the dealer lied on the contract saying I put down 3800 in cash on the vehicle when I only put 2400.. I’ve had this car for 2 months now and after the air conditioner went out in it less than a week later it stops while I’m driving down the road. Transmission went out. So now I’m stuck with a car note of $304 plus insurance $178 on a car I can’t afford to fix. Dealership won’t answer me back. I still owe $18000 to credit Acceptance. And I have no idea what to do

I purchased a vehicle using Credit Acceptance and paid on-time until my financial situation changed in 2017. I let someone borrow the car and they refused to bring it back. I contacted the police but since I had initially allowed the person to use the car it couldn’t be reported as stolen. However, the police did put in a note to look for the vehicle. The vehicle was found in another city after being towed. I contacted Credit Acceptance and told them that I wanted to voluntarily surrender the vehicle and where they could pick up the vehicle. I talked to someone a week or so later and was told that it wasn’t worth it to them to pay the fee to get the vehicle from the tow yard so they had just left it there. My account with them was closed and in collections until 2019 when they changed the status of my account to open and began reporting late payments every month since then. I have contacted the credit bureaus and Credit Acceptance and every time the credit bureaus say that the information is accurate. It caused me to not be able to purchase a home in 2019 when the place I was renting decided to sell and I only had a month’s notice.

I was always paying more than the amount. Day and night calling me on my company phone. I quit the company they was still calling there phone. I have no clue what happened to that. I need help with this

I purchased a vehicle in 2016. I paid on time for the until the engine went out.l for 17 months. I was a single mother of 3 and could not afford to repair the car or continue the payments. I called credit acceptance and voluntarily relinquished the car. It took them several months just to come pick the vehicle up. I was never contacted again by credit acceptance until I received a judgment last year stating my wages were being garnished. They claim I still owe almost 9,000 for a vehicle that was only 6,000 at the time of purchase. My checks are being garnished 300 per month now. It really is putting a strain given the high inflation right now. At the time I purchase this car I did not even have a valid driver license and my credit score was not great. I fell like the actual cost of the vehicle has long since been paid in full, almost 3,500 since the garnishment began and paying on the loan for 17 months at 350+ . I can’t continue to pay this amount for 2 years..

I like many on here got sucked in by used car dealership, one particular in Wisconsin that jumps on that band wagon to make a buck with the deceptive help of Credit Acceptance, many used car dealers operate just like the one that was called “Drive Time”, if any recall that dealership, it was the type that bought cars (used) from other companies or sellers, fixed them up with minal work like oil change etc and by Lemon Law these dealerships are to fix any defect or make the consumer aware of them before selling but surprise surprise, why look stupid when you can collect a decent profit, so they sell them AS IS!, I needed just a kick around car to get me to the grocery store and back, I drive an 18 wheeler and most companies don’t like their trucks being used as personal charters. So I was looking for something in the 1500.00 dollar range, and the dealer Kunes Country Chevrolet in Delavan found one. At the price I was looking for, a 2011 dodge ram nitro heat suv. My credit wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the 5 spangled banner either. So I was introduced to Credit Acceptance as a lender, by the end of it all I ended up charged 30.000- the car apparently had issues right off the bat, the dealership told me it had 10 thousand miles on it, when I got it it was 100,002 miles. My payments were 435.00 a month for 3 years. Right away fuel tank would not take fuel in,, you pump then stop and wait for it to drain, pump again repeat this for 25 minutes! Then one of the tires leaks air over a period of time, heating coils, never cleaned can’t defrost in winter, auxiliary charger was already old and on its last leg. So here I was with a 30 thousand sick puppy in need of repairs. I was charged 200 for towing back to the dealership since the battery wasn’t being charged, I was charged another 200.00 for a auxiliary charger out of Mexico. I was in the process of moving out of Wisconsin and closer to my work in Minnesota, I got the car fixed to run long enough to move my things into storage and get out to my work, I spent my first six months living out of my truck to make up the difference of costs all this had on me. Then one of the truck mechanics at work suggested a auto repair shop they said would fix the aliment I had been dealing with and at reasonable prices, Kunes surely wasn’t educated enough or reasonable, so next problem the engine began choking out and stalling. Mind you I am still making payments and it’s now into the 6 month since April 2018, so I had enough, the winter in Minnesota is vastly colderand I had to replace my battery to handle the condition. I had the car towed to this shop recommended, what a God send! They fixed the fuel filter problem not accepting fuel told me that was dangerous couldn’t believe a dealership sold you a car in that type of shape, now I can pump fuel under 10 minutes woo hoo! Especially in – 15 degrees cold chill.
The next issue was the heater coils, new ones would of ran me 2000.00 straight up, so this mechanic suggested he could have them blown out to work a bit better for less but eventually new ones needed to be installed. Then the power window button went out, he fixed that, the engine decided to stall and choke out, he fixed that, the reverse lights had a wiring defect , he fixed that , oil was never changed out, he fixed that. By the time all that was needed to keep me going til I could pay this thing down and get rid of it, it took 1 1/2 years to get it to where it would hold me up, all came to 2700.00, now here is where Credit Acceptance began getting stupid with me,
I began giving them 600.00 a month over the 435.00, figuring pay down this thing and rid of it by year 3 if possible, however this business messed up on schedule payments, I never signed up for auto pay, my mom always warned me that type isn’t the best method, always budget and manually pay your fee. 4x now this business took 1200.00 out of my bank trying to say I set it up that way, total flipping lie. And you have to fight them to refund the extra 5 fingering they took out behind your back. This is a card shark business, very underhanded. Worst idea to build your credit up cause they mess you up consistently. They put me on that COVID19 waiver crap assuming it effected my employment, I said hell no, maybe most trucking companies were hit by it while others hung in there, those who did were on high demand, our was one of the reliable ones so it didn’t effect me. But Credit Acceptance ASSUMES things like they are some kind of wanna be fortune teller, and jump to conclusions. Other dealership companies stay far from them they want to keep a good repor with the customers for come backs, but those who are 2nd rate greedy will use Credit Acceptance like a fat kid loves cake. My personal advice to those look to build up credit, find a decent credit card company and work your self up, save what you can and shop around for a reliable dealership, check with the BBB first to see what ranks they hold. But yeah this car is almost paid off, and it’s been one hell of a learning experience .

Purchased a 2013 ford explorer and went through credit acceptance in 2020. COVID-19 hit and they still upped our payment after we got laid off because everything shut down. Which put us way behind. They towed our vehicle without letting us know they were going to do so. Our local sheriff says it is against the law what they did.

I got a car from a dealer called AUG automotive group who said they were able to finance me through credit acceptance. I had the car not even a month when the check engine light came on. I had the codes scanned and it was the catalytic converter. AUG told me they couldn’t do anything because they didn’t handle repairs and I’d have to have it repaired myself. 30 days go by and I still haven’t received my license plates in the mail. I was driving without current registration because my dealer temp tag expired. Another month goes by and another and another still no license plates, the dealer kept giving me the run around. And then I sign onto my credit acceptance payment portal and it told me that my account didn’t exist so I contact AUG who tells me that they bought the contract back from credit acceptance and I had to make payments to AUG now I was having financial issues due to covid and Aug agreed I could pay whenever I got my income tax. Not even a week after that they repoed my car

I called credit acceptance and they said the account is closed and they cannot give me any information that any questions I have has to be asked to the dealer. I asked them well can you tell me why and they said they couldn’t tell me.

  • Nicole

Credit acceptance is charging me late fees I don’t owe. The payoff on my car keeps changing I checked my portal it was 3125 then they sent me my payments and that said I owe 3325. Ibe paid over 12000 dollars on my 2008 nissan rogue. I owe 15000 dollars on a rogue that had 145000 miles on it. Which I was stupid to buy but my credit is not good. I have called them and asked 3 times to send me a statement of my originally agreement when I got the car and they have refused. This company doesn’t post payments and on your credit report tons of missing payments. I am behind Sept and october of this year which will be paid this month. So I owe 543 not 800. Why is this company still opened?

  • Paul

Purchased a Kia Optima back in 2017 from Chris Auto Clinic of Plainsville, CT, financed through Credit Acceptance. One month after, the engine went. Sent it back to the dealer, and the engine was replaced at no charge through the waranty I purchased. 2 months after that, the engine went. When I sent it back, I was told that the warranty company refused to replace the engine, that was under warranty, due to “Driver Error”. At that point I was done. I was not offered any assistance at all. No replacement vehicle, and I was told that I still had to pay the monthly car note. As of now, I am under judgement for this debt, which I am not complaining about because I did enter into a contract with these bastards. But in my opinion, the entire deal was *#@#” up !!!!!

I recently recieved a notice in the mail that CAC was sueing me for close to 8,000 dollars and I voluntarily gave them their car back because I couldn’t afford it but they said they didn’t want it because it wasn’t worth being picked up and they would lose money. I paid for the car for 2 years at $360.80 a month =8640 and that’s how much the car was worth. i told them could they send me ll this in writing and I haven’t recieved anything yet.

Credit Acceptance has a contradictory reputation among consumers: https://credit-acceptance.pissedconsumer.com/review.html Always read reviews before signing a contract!

My wife had some medical issues the put us in a bind and ended up missing two payments. I tried to talk to cresit acceptance but they wouldnt work with me and ended up repossesing my car. I called later in the week and paid them almost 900 dollars to get my car back . the next month i was 2 days late bc the payment was due on a wednesday and i get paid on fridays. So i called to make my payment with late fees only to be told that i owed almost 800 more dollars and that they wouldnt accept a payment unless i paid all that was due. They were charging me my monthly payment of 328 pluss 300 for repo and late fees. Now im being sued for the remaining balance after they auctioned the car for 7 grand less than i bought it for

CREDIT ACCEPTANCE IS A JOKE AND THEY LIE TO YOU!! THEY ARE DEFINITELY A RIP OFF. I would love for someone to contact me about this because my sister and I have alot to say…I was told my car would be a certain amount and get home and open up the credit acceptance website and Im paying double for the car. I was told to keep my car in good standing for 2 years and I could trade it off, that was a lie. Also paid for a warrant that wasn’t TRUE.
My car got totaled and insurance is paying them the AVC which makes me still owe then 2938.85 asked about what I need to do with that or if we can do a new payment agreement and they told me NO>>>>

  • JJ

I went to buy a car that was purchased at a Honda dealership and financed by Credit Acceptance. I had mechanical issues with the car right away that I told both companies about. (They had to weld the underneath of the car back together as it has been in an accident which I was not made aware of). They put a starter interrupter on my car along with a kill switch. This is not even legal anymore in the state that I am in and the AG’s office has looked into similar cases. They refuse to take it off even though I was not told about it to begin with. They threaten to shut my car off and track me down if i am even one day late on a payment. I do not appreciate these tactics and this has caused me a great deal of stress. The mechanics think that this switch is causing mechanical issues with the car as well. They do not seem to care and are forcing me to keep this on even though it is not legal in my state anymore.

I got behind on payments and I called and spoke to someone and explained that I was going to start making double payments. The lady said that would be fine, I asked that they send me a payment book so I can make the payments at Walmart. Well they never sent the book to me so I could start making payments at Walmart and I was told that they weren’t going to do the repossession. Yeah right, I went out to go to the Veterans Hospital for a appointment and my car was gone. When I called them at first they acted like I was crazy, but I was pretty sure they were sneaky as heck. So my car that I have paid $4,600.00 is in repo status and they want $2,400.00 to get it out. The car is a 2005, definitely not worth $7,000.00. Stuck in a jam. Thanks to Credit Acceptance.

I was kind of mislead by a car dealer into taking a loan from CA . I did need a car but I wanted to wait to establish more down payment money. I was accepted for credit and I only had job for a month! My payment is 336.00 a month for a 10 year old car. It burdened ne financially. My rent was late due to car payment. Now I currently am unemployed seeking work. CA calls Everyday starting at 8am. Ive tried to explain to the caller but they respond like robots. They try and make me feel worthless. I have been so upset with my finances not just my car but things more important. Rent ,utilitie food. I cant talk to them as a human being. I even said go ahead take the car I will live. They continue to call. Im actually seeking counseling to help me feel better about myself and find a good paying steady job.

We have been dealing with Credit Acceptance for two years now, I believe. I have been going online to make payments every month. Last summer we fell behind one payment. I called and they were very rude. All of the sudden they reported to the credit bureau that we owe more than we originally signed for. We got the payments caught up and the balance kept rising. My husband woke up today and the car is gone. No warning or anything. We need this car

In 2015 my husband and I purchased a used SUV getting financed through Credit Acceptance for $8900. After years of making payments CAC has reported that we haven’t made a payment since 2015, they’re reporting that our account is charged off due to natural disaster, and our payoff is $8712! However,we still have our SUV, they’re still taking money from our checking account,&our vehicle has not been in a natural disaster! Apparently they have been reporting this to the credit bureau since 2016 but we just found out when we went to get a new vehicle but couldn’t because of the repossession that is not repossessed! If anyone can help me deal with these crooks I will GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!years,CAC is saying our payoff is $8712, they’re reporting to the credit bureau’s that the account has been charged off due to natural disaster, and no payments have been made since 2015! However,we still have our SUV, they’re still taking money from our checking account

My husband and I were forced into a bankruptcy because of this company. In 2016 my husband had serious health problems and we missed one payment. They took the car and we paid the payment and fees to catch us up. Literally EVERY TWO WEEKS we were getting threatening calls about if you don’t pay we are going to repo your car. We paid what we were told then they called again…3 months into this and a tow truck creeping by our house not picking up the car, like a threat- we couldn’t live like that anymore. So we gave it up. NEVER EVER USE THIS COMPANY. Just got something in the mail about another lawsuit the consumers won. We signed it and sent it back. Pays out in February. I hope they keep getting sued. Preying on public like they do.

I got laid off and told them we could make two payments of on December 28th. They said that was fine but this morning they repoed my van and we had to pay a ridiculous amount to get it back and then the towing fees as well. They never told us they were taking the van and even admitted on the phone it was their mistake. We only had $1000 left to pay but now with all the new fees they somehow came up with over3000 owed even though it was their fault cuz they didn’t read that I had an arrangement.

My payment was due Nov 22 they shut my vehicle off Dec 9th refused to work with me they said I could make the payment that day or it would be up for repo I called the next day to make the payment and they wouldn’t let me they said it’s going to be repossessed and there’s nothing I can do.

Can they take my wages or income taxes? Please help I just got a job but I don’t have money to pay them

  • Amy

They called my place of business….said they were from my insurance company….needed the correct spelling of my name. Checked with HR and all our insurance info is through our parent company….about 1 to 2 weeks later I was served with a garnishment at work! All calls are recorded….wish I would have been a little faster at thinking.
