Windshield cracking is a problem that has haunted Toyota RAV4 owners for years, and 2022 Toyota RAV4 owners are no exception.
Several 2022 RAV4 owners have complained to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) about spontaneous windshield cracking. These tally with complaints made to the NHTSA by owners about 2020 and 2021 Toyota RAV4 models. Some vehicles are new and the scenario is the same. The windshield cracks or shatters without anything hitting it. Vehicles are either in normal use or parked.
Consumers are complaining that the only way to avoid the risks of RAV4 windshields cracking is to take out windshield replacement insurance from a Toyota dealer. But, of course, this involves paying additional fees.
Toyota RAV4 owners are experiencing cracks in various forms and sizes. Some are hairline cracks while others immediately look more severe. But either way, once a windshield cracks the glass will continue to crack and will likely make the vehicle legally unsafe to drive. It may even be ordered off the road.
Ongoing discussion about Toyota RAV4 windshield cracks in a RAV4 forum started in April 2021. While it is not always clear which model RAV4 is affected, the theme throughout is the same.
Original Thread Post: “Is anyone having any issues with sudden windshield cracks? We bought our RAV new. In the first hour the windshield cracked, about halfway across the windshield and it started from the bottom of the windshield below the wipers. The crack went up about 8 inches. After arguing with the dealer, Toyota replaced the windshield. Fast forward 14 months, windshield cracks in just about the same spot. Stress fracture? Unable to feel any chip either time.”
First response: “How odd, I saw a brand new (still with temporary plates) RAV that had a full crack a few weeks ago. My RAV has one crack about 3 inches and another chip. I am going with non-Toyota glass, if I have to replace mine.”
The owner of a 2021 RAV4 says his windshield “got a 1 inch hairline crack in it. I was on the freeway and just heard it crack. I didn’t hear anything hit it before it cracked.” He says that he had it “repaired through my insurance with no deductible, but they just had it filled in but if it cracks again I’m going to replace it.”
Another owner says: “My wife was driving my RAV last summer and it suddenly cracked from below the wipers right in front of the passenger seat, in a nice wavy line all the way up to the center of the windshield. I suppose it is on my to-do list.”
If you’re wondering about insurance: “When we bought our RAV4 2019 and RAV4 2020, we paid extra for the windshield replacement insurance from the Toyota Dealer. After reading about all the windshield problems, happy we did.”
“After hearing about all the windshield cracking issues on here, I added windshield replacement coverage to my insurance for <$5 a month. Peace of mind.”
Will you get charged more by a dealer if you don’t have insurance? “My dealership offers glass repair, then takes it over the road to local speedy glass around (the) corner, I have driven by & seen a couple of Toyota’s line up outside. I am sure that there is a markup for this service.”
“On May 13th, 2022, I was in my garage and inside the vehicle in Park mode when I suddenly heard a little crack sound coming from the windshield. It was very faint, but I heard it. Then I noticed that it was the windshield and it had a little crack.
“On May 19, 2022, I took the vehicle to Elmhurst Toyota, and they stated that a rock hit the windshield, which is false. I am certain that it is a defect of the windshield in the RAV4s. I am not the first person to complain about the faulty windshield on these models and truly believe that is very unsafe. This needs to be investigated as it can cause a car accident if cracked on the highway.”
An owner from Florida suddenly noticed a hairline crack on the front windshield. The complaint states that the vehicle was nearly a month old and always kept in the garage. The crack went from the driver’s pillar to halfway towards the rear view mirror.

Our windshield cracked spontaneously while driving today. From what we could hear and see, no rock hit it. The crack is from the bottom of my palm to the tip of my finger.
I ordered a brand new 2022 Toyota RAV4 from a dealer in Henderson, NV. Today, the dealer called to tell me that the vehicle arrived with a crack in the windshield and they were going to order a new windshield from the original factory OEM. They said it would take 7-10 days for the part to arrive and they would have it installed by a Toyota factor trained technician. I inquired if other vehicles were damaged in transportation. He said that 3 out of 7 Toyota vehicles had windshield damages during transportation. I have a $500 deposit on this vehicle. What do you recommend that I should do? Ask for a refund or go for another Toyota brand? Or give up Toyota? I find it suspicious that 3 out of 7 vehicles had windshield damage during transportation.
